Why so expensive? I'd rather pay a bit more and get some good german stuff.

    • +12

German beer vs hoppy styles is apples vs oranges. Balter is fine… but I'd rather pay more for a good IPA.

    • +1

To be fair it's the 2nd most popular craft beer in AUS: https://gabshottest100.com/auresults/2023/

      • +10

It's a decent beer yes, but popularity doesn't really mean much. Asahi owns Balter so this has a wide reach with plenty of advertising, being the only crafty option in a bunch of pubs etc.

Just not a great deal at this price IMO.

Agreed. Like Little Creatures and Stone & Wood before it, once it goes mass market it loses a good chunk of its character. LC, S&W & Balter all smelled and tasted much better previously, now they are watered down.

          • +2

@Ham Dragon: Not watered down per say, but likely pasteurised because of the larger volume now and the need to have a long enough shelf life in order to meet the turnaround time for on-shelf products at liquor retailers.

Same thing happened to Little Creatures. I used to do projects with them back when they were small. It tasted so good, different to today's Little Creatures.

No 6 is gage roads which is trash tier.

        • Yeah it seems totally rigged.

          • +3

@Ham Dragon: I'd argue not rigged per se. It's just a popularity contest and surprise, surprise the beers you can pick up at every Uncle Dan's, BWS, etc get into the top 10-20…

I'd rather pay a bit more and get some good german Belgium stuff.

Less than 2% off is a bargain now ?

    • a penny saved is a penny earned ….

      • But what price can you put on enjoyment?

        • -1

          About tree fiddy.

  • +1

Good beer, but okay deal only if you don't live near a well known bottle-o or are lazy.

  • +13

Like America tipping culture; a case of beer which contains less than the equivalent of 24x375mls is something we should resist

    • Couldn't agree more!

      • +1

And a case of beer has 24 innit, not 16.

    • Depends really. A case of 16 has it's place, for example high ABV beers that are consumed a bit slower and, if IPAs, have a shorter shelf life.

  • +8

So saving $1.05 and waiting a week to get my beer - yeah not for me.

This is really a bottom of the barrel 'bargain'.

  • +5

Not a bad beer if on sale, but I prefer the "Hazy IPA" but that is rarely on sale for a case.

    • +3

Agree, the Balter hazy IPA is up there in quality.

  • This will probably get down voted. But I personally find this beer to be disgusting. I think that they have tried to hard to give it that craft taste (very very fruity) that it doesn't even taste like beer.

Each to their own though. If you do enjoy this beer and are happy to pay a premium price for it, enjoy the bargain.

    • Too strong in my opinion.

      • Lucky you have a wide choice of beers in most cities in Australia.

Plenty of weaker taste/alcohol beers available.

  • +4

So this "deal" inspired me to go searching for something better, and I found it.

Uber Eats currently has 30% off at First Choice, Liquorland and BWS. My local First Choice has 3 for $37.80 (after the 30% off) on a range of beers including Balter. If you have free delivery (which every Oz Bargainer should) its $40 for 12 Balter XPAs delivered or maybe even more appealing beers. Then you can add additional discount codes if you have.

  • Nice beer, not really a deal at $1.05 off
