Claiming Motor Insurance Claim along with Home

I accidentally reversed my car with my tail gate open and this brushed against the base of my garage door, the rubber seal at the base.

This scratched the back of my car - the body and the back light. This also bent the garage door slightly and have noticed that ever since that the door started to malfunction for example when I close the door, it comes all the way to the bottom and opens again.

I have a Complete Care Car Insurance with RACV and was wondering if I could cover the car repairs and also claim the garage door repair or replacement. I have a separate insurance with Allianz for Home and Contents Insurance.

I worry for our society when some people need to ask in a public forum for obvious answers like this…

OOI, how does this happen? Too much reliance on the reverse camera?

      Browsing OzBargain while reversing

1)Was either reversing with the back hatch open deliberately and accidentally caused the damage
      OR
2)Meant to drive forward and accidentally went backwards,
      that what you mean?

      • Would assume 1. You shouldn't be driving any distance with doors/back hatch/boot/bonnet open anyway.

    • The reverse camera would have shown a picture of the garage ceiling or sky.

      • Exactly, in which case their learned dependence on reverse cameras contributed to the crash

Doesn't your new car have a tailgate open warning light?

    • It does :( It was a bad day - It might have alerted but everything happened just so quickly.

      • +4

That's not an excuse. You could have hit a child.

        • You could have hit a child

Yes and they wouldn't have seen it because the camera is on the tailgate. So they would've been seeing part sky.

      • Tucson’s Smart Power Tailgate provides convenient hands-free powered operation.
The tailgate can be opened using the switch, the Smart Key button, or by the user being in proximity.
When the user enters the detection zone (50-100cm aft of the tailgate) with the Smart Key, an alert is sounded and the hazard lights flash. Should the user remain within this area for three seconds, the tailgate will open automatically.
Tailgate speed and lift height are easily adjusted. The latter is selectable from three heights, to allow for easy reach, as well as preventing contact with a low ceiling.

        • That is only on the newer models I think. My wife's 2022 doesn't have it.

Claim is on whatever has the lowest excess and is less likely to impact premiums. I would say the house insurance could be the best one, but everyone's circumstances and policies differ.

I don't think house insurance going to cover the damage to the car. The House didn't moved and hit the car lol

    • +2

You didn't think this through did you

  • Give them a call.

Short answer is no. Car insurance covers damage to other parties property by you, not your own property

  • +4

You need to first exchange details with yourself

Garage door accidents seem to be surprisingly common.

Based on a quick look at another forum, you'd likely be paying both excesses - car insurance for your car, and home insurance for the garage door.

Best to call and ask though - posting here and overthinking it is living through the pain multiple times.

  • Nice insurance job

You'll be making two claims here. While car insurance does cover property damage, they do exclude your OWN property from the coverage!

So there will be one claim on the car insurance to fix the car and another on the house insurance to fix the door.

and have noticed that ever since that the door started to malfunction for example when I close the door, it comes all the way to the bottom and opens again.

You could try to reset the limit settings, read your manual on how to get the door to do an adjustment cycle.

Otherwise, if it is only the roller door busted, it would be cheaper to get that replaced out of pocket so you don't have a claim against the house.

  • Thank you

  • 2 claims and 2 excesses unfortunately as you cant sue yourself for damages

2 fast 2 furious when parking

    • Depends on the excess but literally what will happen.
