I had two of the new Chinese made Varta cells leak in a device (something that has never happened with the German made ones) so I've sworn off them.

    • So sad. Didn't realise varta are no longer made in germany

      • Fortunately it was just a cheap sensor light installed in my under-the-stairs cupboard.

        • Interestingly, one of my sensor lights also had a battery cell leak (Costco Kirkland brand). However, all Alkaline batteries can and do leak (I experienced leaks from Duracell, Energizer before). Hard to find non alkaline super heavy duty batteries now.

I do find on cheap LED sensor lights and LED torches, alkaline batteries tend to leak quite often (even when the batteries are not completely flat yet). Cheap LED sensor lights, I often find the batteries don't deplete at the same rate, one of them always goes flat first, then it has a higher risk to start leaking.

          • @netsurfer: Your observations regarding battery depletion on some sensor lights correspond with mine. Those that take three AAA batteries tend to have one sitting well below the voltage of the other two. I'm somewhat obsessive with batteries and Dymo the installation date on them and check them every two months. I was amazed when the Varta ones leaked after four months (as I was due to replace them). I've had most battery brands leak but not Energizer Max (yet)… which may seem a little strange seeing as Varta is one of the Energizer brands.

            • @cryptowiz: I just found a leaking battery in a door sensor - aaa Varta made in Germany. I’ve now set a battery alert in Home assistant - hindsight is wonderful.
