    Link to 16GB RAM variant:

Worth it to add the extra memory if you want to run Windows office tasks, imo.

      • Absolutely. I completely lucked out when I bought one last time and found an identical stick of (used) RAM for $25 shipped and this works out to an extra $23.38 with eBay Plus.

        • -2

          So you saved $6.62 lol?

          • @Jessie Ryder: Huh? The extra 16GB in this deal costs $23.38 and the cheapest I managed to find, when I paid over $240 for the same model some time ago, was $25. To put it simply, an extra $23.38 for an extra 8GB is very reasonable.

      • +1

Also considering these are often used for micro-servers very worth while. 16gb should be minimum spec these days either way.

    • +6

      Was $164 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/842242

      Also note @soidesire comment:

The 8500T has a base frequency of 2.10 GHz while the 8500 non-T has a base frequency of 3.00 GHz

…and the 35W CPU is replaced with a 65W one.

      • Do these two factors make it a much better purchase???

        • +1

No, that offer is finished. Still, there is a trade off between power usage and speed with performance directly related to processor speed. For example, a car at 210kph will take longer to get from A to B but use less fuel than one at 310kph.

    • Better option is to buy extra 8GB RAM separately

      • If you can find it cheaper, sure.

        • It's not an unreasonable price, but if you want to run 16GB dual channel at least you know that's what you'll get in the end.
Could go either way if it's supplied, and costs about the same to buy the extra 8GB separately.

    • Whilst overwhelmingly likely you'll get 2666MHz RAM. I didn't, mine came with 2133MHz.

      • That’s the wrong ram for this model. It’s never been supplied with 2133 and the 8500T specs 2666. Might be something to ask the seller, if you can be bothered and aren’t considering an upgrade.

  • +1

These are good homelab machines and take 64gb ram,Can also take 2.5gb nic in the wifi slot and take two disks . M.2 and sata .

    • It’s possible it can run one additional half height M2 drive in the wifi card slot but hard to get a definitive answer on this.

    • +1

I’ve had the equivalent Lenovo model with the same CPU, but 32GB and 1TB m.2 for Proxmox for over a year now. Runs HA, 3-4 Windows VMs and servers, plus a dozen random LXCs and containers. Pretty solid, but would definitely upgrade to 64GB to avoid having to fiddle around with ballooning when the Windows VMs crank up.

Don’t bother with 2.5gb NICs - just get a cheap USB 3 one for around $30. I’ve added one to my NAS too - they’re directly connected on a two-host network for an SMB share. Saturates the link at 2.4Gbps.

    • the listing indicates max memory of 32GB. Can they actually take 64GB, because that would make an awesome Proxmox host

      • Yes they can

    • keen to know this as well

    • Do they have whitelisted memory modules or NICs or can use any?

  • Is this a good alternative to run Zwift instead of my Surface Pro 6?

People praise this as a Plex server but I can't see this as a good option to play 4k Remux files, right?

    • +1

Yeah I use one for Zwift, paired with a cheap 24" monitor and it goes well

    • It decodes 265 on hardware, so why not? I guess it might need a HDMI port, and I haven't checked the display specs

      • You can get display port to hdmi cable or adapter. The one I bought from last deal came with 3 display ports

  • Also interested if this is good for Plex, possibly only need 1 x 4k transcode or 2 X 1080p

    • Yes. Just yes.

      • Actually, need something with some more juice, I need Plex and Blue Iris.

        • Blue iris doesn't sound that thirsty?

          • @Droz: And do you actually need transcoding?

            • @Droz: Should always plan for transcoding - large 4k remux down to 1080 when needed.

        • I just want milk that tastes like real milk. It’ll Plex well, relax.

    • I run Plex/Jellyfin/Sonarr/Radarr/JellySeerr/HomeAssistant all on this machine (16GB variant). Handles it easily.

      • How many 4k transcodes it handle out of curiosity ? and the load of say an avg 60gb+ 4k transcode ?

    • Looks like the Intel 8th gen with quick sync can handle 4 4k -> 1080p transcodes simultaneously… You'll be fine

  • Any recommendation for a low-profile gpu to go with this?

    • -1

This is the micro, not the SFF, so I think you're out of luck?

      • Thanks, I am not buying it then since it cant accomodate any decent gpu.

        • Neither can the low profile SFF machines, they only take a very narrow selection of very expensive half-height cards.

If you want to install a GPU then you need the Tower form factor.
          https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/dell-optiplex-7…

          • @Nom: So… The SFF can take a low profile then…

            • -1

@Droz: Low profile cards in SFF machines haven't been a viable option for a long time.

I use three SFF machines for different things, all with low profile cards installed, 2 1050ti and 1 Radeon 6400. The cards are all very old by today's standards, and still very expensive. What's more, the cards are usually double-with and so they sometimes force you into the 4x PCIe slot which lowers performance even more - dramatically so with the 6400 in a 3.0 4x slot.

As I said, if you need to install a graphics card then buy a Tower form factor like the one in my link.
SFF machines limit you to a very small selection of expensive low-performance graphics cards - with no benefits.

      • Afaik this has m2 sata, not compatible with m2 pcie cards.

How would this compare to a Beelink Alder Lake-N100 Processor (Up to 3.40GHz) Mini Computer, MINI-S12 Pro Mini PC, 16GB RAM 500GB SSD Business Mini Desktop PC, Dual HDMI/WiFi 6/BT 5 .2/RJ45/WOL/Auto Power On https://amzn.asia/d/44Cscjd which is $65 more compared to the equivalent 16gb Dell 7060 refurb.

    • This deal would give better multi-core performance. I would have thought that the n100 would give better power efficiency. The TDP on the N100 is much lower but I can't seem to find any figures showing the N100 having better real world performance. The N100 would also have a newer GPU with support for more codecs (if you want to use it for PLEX). — https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_processor_n1…

  • Are the power supplies for these reliable compared to the inbuilt ones on larger PCs?

    • +1

They're essentially laptop power supplies, easily found and widely available as spares. They are big, but never had an issue with reliability.

  • Any recommendations for a larger hard drive for this pc?

  • +1

be sure you get a genuine Dell power supply for these micro machines, as there is BIOS level check. If the check fails the CPU is throttled to a ver low speed. You can fix my running a free software in windows but u have to do this on ever reboot. I went through several clone suplies b4 i paid for a dell unit direct from dell. this seems to be common practice by Dell HP and possibly Lenovo on laptops and micro pcs that use externa psu bricks. Bios looks for a signal from psu to identify as genuine. Check buyer is suplying genuine dell psu for ur system.

It was not like this in the old days but everyone seems to be following the Apple example of licensing specific cable providers for lightning cable chargers.

    • Where do you source those genuine Dell power supplies? I doubt they will be cheap

    • Could someone kindly post the exact model Dell PSU for this micro or either the 7070? Im hoping theyre the same psu used by both 7060 7070. These sellers should be providing the PSUs honestly.

  • How does this compare to the last micro PC that just expired from Aussie computer traders

Same model and spec as the 8GB version they offered on that deal, but it was $164 delivered.

Still, this is a decent price.
