    About time

      • +7

        Ok

      • Have no fear. No one wants to know you or me

      • +1

        Do you recommend the book?

      • +4

They already take a photo of you when you get the licence to begin with.

      • +1

cool story bro. was aluminum foil on sale this week at the farmers market

      • +1

They already have your details tho, it's just more convenient for you.

        • is it though? having everything in one place making it easier for your odentity stolen, sold abused, and ultimately control you but then again im sure the government wont implement systems similar to china has right now

      • +2

How exactly is this different from them printing your physical one, lol. What a terrible take.

  • +3

Can this do Proof of Age IDs?

    • +6

Yes it has three tabs. License. Identity. Age.

      • Then yes, I'm using it.

    • +1

If you use your driver's license to prove your age - then yes

      • +1

It's for those who can't get drivers licenses. I know a girl at work who medically can't get one and doesn't have any ID except for her passport.

        • It's a VicRoads feature so I'm guessing you will need a license to use this as proof of age*

          *Don't quote on that though

        • +1

Keypass from auspost. Valid all over Australia

          • @soan papdi: AP no longer issues Keypass. Stopped last year.

            • @woodg: Apparently there’s a digital only version. Physical cards were discontinued in 2023.

You can continue to use Keypass in the Digital iD™ app on your smartphone to prove your age.
Alternatively, you can apply for a Victorian Proof of Age Card at selected Post Offices.
Other states / territories also issue Proof of Age Cards. For more information, please refer to the relevant provider for your state or territory.

I don't think it does so at this stage - but pretty sure it was announced they will be bringing it into the Services Victoria app.

      • +3

Its in the Services Victoria app now.

    • +52

Because your drivers license wasn't already in a database somewhere before… /s

    • +7

Yeah lets pretend like several massive data breaches haven't already happened
At this point leaking my data again would be like having double-ups of trading cards

      • -1

This time they get the full picture not just the details.
that card number on the back that saved us last time is going to be useless.

        • The first breach there was no card number on VIC licences, it was introduced after the Optus incident. Having been affected by Medibank, and separately getting a renewed license, the card number changes each time.

        • Not really, because they can reissue the licence with a different card number and then the old licence still becomes invalid for ID checks.

    • +3

      Cries in Optus.

    • +1

      Countdown from 1…

Its a given that it will happen..

    • As compared to what? How do you think they check your physical license?

  • +2

Unfortunately you can't use it when applying for passport, you need the physical one. Or Hotel that need a copy of your ID. It just a half baked product.

    • +2

You also cant go to the casino

      • Huh, interesting, i've gotten into the casino using the Aus post Keypass/parcel collect app before, that said maybe the guards were having a good day i've had mixed results with different forms of ID and changing which entrance and the other guard being fine

          • +1

@BadGiraffe: Yup that's the one!, i think i used my passport and Medicare from memory (but it had a few other options) and once its set up it lets you create an ID for collecting parcels, and another virtual keypass. I've also used it to buy alcohol without issue, In the past i've used proof of age card but this has been good when i forget purse.

      • oh no

        anyway

    • Why does a hotel need a photocopy of your ID?

      • Some ask for copy of your driving license/passport plus CC. Incase you burn down the place.

        • -3

          Stay at better hotels.

        • Incase you burn down the place

But that would destroy any proof of ID already provided…

        • -1

          With your electric vehicle?

      • Why does a hotel need a photocopy of your ID?

More of a overseas thing…..Asia wants passports when checking in etc.

      • So they can kick you out / ban you if you re actually good.

    • +2

Unfortunately you can't use it when applying for passport, you need the physical one. Or Hotel that need a copy of your ID. It just a half baked product.

How is it half baked? Those two examples are places not accepting a digital version, not so much an issue with the digital version.

      • +2

You'll find out, even in NSW when you goes to service nsw you will need your physical licence in some transactions despite having digital for ages. What's the point of using something not recognised by its own issuing authority.

        • Thats not so much of an issue with the digital licence as such, but more the 'services nsw' policies not accepting them.

In the context of most people, the police accept them, which is the number 1 reason people carry their licence for.

  • +2

A Digital license is amazingly convenient.
Wish they would bring them out in other states.

    • +2

      It's in Queensland

      • +3

bloody shocked to the core that qld beat vic to this

    • +3

Been in NSW for a number of years

      • +1

Since Covid the Service NSW app is such a gold standard for government apps its so strange considering how they generally handle anything else.

If anyone says shit about the app I might throw hands IDK.

    • -1

Its not that convenient, would be better if i can add to google wallet or so. I had the SA version for while and still easy to use the physical card.

      • +1

It is if your job frequently requires multiple id checks and or you don’t like to carry a physical wallet.

        • Not many agreed with me, but that is fine, to use the digital license, I need to unlock my phone and find the app, every so often I need to use the username/password instead of a fingerprint and wait for a text message for authentication or I could grab the physical card and show me.

And there are a few occasions, as I mentioned before, that they don't accept digital versions on some places.

But having said that, having a digital ID is good, as there are times I just forget to carry my wallet for short trips, where if cops need it, I have something to show. So I would say it's useful but not convenient, and in some cases relies on it becoming inconvenient to me.

          • +1

            @boomramada:

I need to unlock my phone

            Swipe

            find the app,

Tap (potentially 2 taps and or an additional swipe)

every so often I need to use the username/password instead of a fingerprint

            Password key chain

wait for a text message for authentication

2 seconds and a click to autofill.

            So 5-10 seconds total.

or I could grab the physical card and show me.

            Exactly.
If its not good for you, you don’t need to use it. But for many people it will be more convenient.

          • @boomramada: QLD digital licence is great. I’d rather have to take an extra 5 seconds to open it than carry around my old wallet.

            • @digitalbath: @digitalbath @El Chapo I'm not against it, I think providers need to get rid of extra layers of security, I know it is there to satisfy all the cyber worries, which makes it annoying, at least for me.
When SA introduced it, I got excited, but then a handful of places that I used didn't even accept them.
Anything that the government makes annoyed me, the Medicare/ATO app, lol

Goverments BA should take notes from CBA tech team.

I could count the times I had to produce my drivers licenses on 1 hand over the last 5 years. So for me it is a great convenience to not have to carry it around. I think most people will find the same.

But you appear to be a edge case, as you need your license checked hourly/daily/weekly then maybe stick to a physical one.

        • For me i enter secure facilities regularly, so will often be asked to produce ID/license.

The reason a physical one is a pain is because i keep my wallet in a bag stored away. Sometimes i switch vehicles midway through the day, thus forgetting my bag/wallet.

And its so incredibly mildly inconvenient to have to pull out even when i have it 😂

So for me, my phone is in a holder at the front. One stop shop convenience.

I basically only carry a wallet for id, this could remove the need for a wallet for me.

  • Thank you for the heads up. There was no confirmation email or anything, it just appeared.

    • They probably didn’t want too many people doing it at once.

  • +2

we've always just added our licenses as a loyalty card in our ewallet.

I wish I could lend my digital license details to nigerian scammers to use, would be good passive income

      Waiting for a national license

While your video you made was total dribble and I watched 2 seconds of it thinking it might be informative, a national license would be good idea.

No changing licences when moving states, no loopholes for people losing a licence in one state and getting in another.

We could also have national road rules, now that would be amazing to have the same rules in all states!!

Like NSW is no u turn at traffic lights unless signed, while VIC is u turns are allowed at lights unless signed.

SA has a 25km/h Emergency Services speed limit, while NSW is some mixed bag of if the speed limit is 80km/h or less, you must slow down to 40km/h
if the speed limit is over 80km/h, you must slow down safely and move over. Slow down to what?!

VIC is a flat slow to 40km/h.

QLD is you must move over and slow down if you see any of these vehicles displaying flashing lights. So I slowed from 100km/h to 90km/h, good enough?

WA is just buzz them, no need to slow down

For a country our size, we shouldn't be having all this state controlled BS.

      • IT would never happen.. Some states would have to back down on their rules etc… Nobody backs down

Then you have hook turns in Vic to contend with too….

        • IT would never happen.. Some states would have to back down on their rules etc… Nobody backs down

They'll just have to suck it up. Win some, lose some!

My point above on passing Emergency vehicles is just ridiculous, who knows what each state laws are when travelling.

Then you have hook turns in Vic to contend with too….

          and?

Hook turns can be a national law. They only apply to certain intersections that have trams running through them. A hook turn isn't part of most peoples driving tests unless you go to a testing center near a hook turn. So no need to learn them.

          • @JimmyF:

A hook turn isn't part of most peoples driving tests

according to several people at work whose kids have been for licenses in last year or 2 - neither is reverse parking anymore… but I digress

            • @pharkurnell:

according to several people at work whose kids have been for licenses in last year or 2 - neither is reverse parking anymore…

WOW really? That is shocking if that is the case. No wonder new drivers struggle!

But I guess the point is, hook turn and now reverse parking rules/laws can apply nationally even if people are not tested on it.

              • +1

@JimmyF: shocked me but explains a hell of a lot of what you see daily with people trying to drive…

            • @pharkurnell: reverse parallel park is part of the driving test, but its like a 50/50 on whether you do that or a three point turn instead during the test.

I very much do care and would never use it. Why does the survey only have 2 options?

  • Can it be added to Apple wallet or only usable via the services app?

    • +1

Can't be added to Apple Wallet.

  • My details don’t match (?). (Don’t have a number on the back)
Edit. Was successful using the vicroads app. Appears that I DO have a number on the back….
