Claim with Car Insurance - Can She Undo It?

My cross the street neighbour asked me last night but I was not sure so I'll check with Braintrust here and hopefully you guys can help her. Poor single woman with special son.

She was at railway station car park. Reserved her car and scratches the car behind. She was at fault. Left her detail. The car owner called her and process the claim through insurance.

Then she was told by someone at work that do not claim through insurance as the scratches does not worth it. She was increased her excess fee ($1350) for lower premium when purchases the policy. The scratches can be done with few hundred dollars.

($1350 excess fee + Next year Premium).

The problem here is she already called up the claim hotline and they have issue her a claim number. She also contact the other party and they are happy to privately settle.

Can she call insurance to un-do the claim? She is with Budget Direct.

Thank you.

Why doesn’t she just call and get it straight from the source ? I assume she called to lodge originally?

I'll check with my neighbour that is three doors down to ask their daughter's boyfriend's cousin who used to be in insurance, I think, and see what they say. I'll be away but they will probably leave a message with the gardener who will be around and will get back to you so you can pass the message on.

Instructions unclear… I asked my husband’s second wife’s daughter in law’s uni roommate’s cousin’s fiancé and he said “shouldn’t be an issue”… For reference, he runs an Uber Eats delivery bike service… if that helps?

Just call the insurance company and say you will be proceeding privately and wish to cancel the claim.

  • Too lateeeeee

Yea, they will hold off on the claim if you decide to pay direct.

Get the other party to give you… errr, your “neighbour” a quote for the repairs. If it is more than insurance, go through insurance. If it’s a fraction of the cost of your sorry, “her” excess, then pay it.

Before she pays though, she will need to get them to sign something that says once she has paid, the debt is considered paid in full and the matter is closed and that no further claim can be made.

Once paid, make sure there is a tracking on the payment, either have them sign a receipt stating they received the money or forward them the payment through direct deposit.

I cannot stress how important this is

  • Have you sorry she paid the excess to the insurance company? I don't think they will start processing before she pays the excess.
Even if she has just ask them!!!

Yes I have done so before with Budget Direct. It shows as a claim which did not proceed but reported. Not counted as a claim (because I was discussing a quote with Shannons)

    • Did it affect next year's premium?

      • No. Didn't look like it. The usual 20% inflation this year.

  • If the cost is less than the excess you pay the cost, not the full excess amount.

Also may not affect next years premiums, but how they calculate insurance premiums is a complete mystery to me.

Beware also the other owner may suddenly decide they want you to fund their hire car for a week while the scratches are being fixed.
