[iOS, Android] Minecraft - $2.99 (Was $9.99), $3.29 (Android Was $11.99) @ Apple App Store, Google Play Store

2190

A price drop on Minecraft at Apple App Store.
I think it's discounted because of the upcoming 15th year anniversary.

Unfortunately no price drop on Google Play Store for Android yet.

Update: Available on Android for $3.29

I believe this is the first time Minecraft it's discounted on iOS (according to app tracking prices).

Perfect for my M4 iPad Pro

    • Did you get a bargain?

    • +1

Make sure you get the 1 or 2Tb version so you can get the Nano-texture glass.

      • +6

Nano-texture upgrade is such a rip off, and constricting…

Just get and apply a ‘paperlike’ screen protector.

        https://paperlike.com/products/paperlike-for-ipad

It’s basically the same thing as Nano-texture + acts as bonus screen protector.

Paperlike is cheaper and available on various iPad size/ version.

If you get tired of the ‘texture’ - remove it (whereas you’re stuck with it on the inbuilt iPad Pro)

        • I hope you're not taking these seriously. My M1 iPad doesn't even lag.

    • Flexing 😃

      • Monopoly pricing is a rip off, iPad Pros from 2020 were 1k

      • With that iPad, literally

  • Will this look OK on my 2556 x 1179 pixel iphone 15?

    • +3

It actually plays well on all phone sizes, even without a controller. jv obviously hasn't had any young kids in the last 10 years.

      • +10

My kids just watch minecraft on youtube…

        • +7

          *My imaginary kids

          • @sunnyc:

            *My imaginary kids

Why do you have imaginary kids?

            • +8

              @jv: Too painful

        • +1

Our kids and their friends all play Roblox because it's free and I'm a tight ass

  • The flexes are real.

  • Great deal. thanks Scrooge, you've done it again.

  • Does it mix well with Windows 10 PCs? Can you cross play?

    • +3

Yes. If you run the Bedrock Minecraft (via ms store) you can join local phone/ipad running the iOS version.

      • While you can play bedrock on PC, most long time Minecraft players prefer the original Java edition which doesn't have crossplay with bedrock editions. Bedrock is considered buggy, incomplete, and annoying, though many of the issues (such as redstone working differently) wouldn't be an issue for a light playthrough.

        • Basic java edition may not have crossplay, but pc also has this available: https://geysermc.org/

Years ago I was in a server running this and they had a bunch of mods, worked great I was using Bedrock (back when java+bedrock were separate purchases)

  • It's not a one time purchase isn't it? Loads of in-app purchases?

    • +12

It’s one time. Unless you have kids. Then they want you to buy shit non-stop of the marketplace.

      • +3

        Then best to avoid.

I saw him playing on the computer (Windows) frequent enough, don't need another platform to spend even more time on it.

        • +7

But what if the child wants to program /mod maps for the game which can require mathematical and physics knowledge thus putting them ahead in studies among their peers or can turn into my parents who have no idea how to turn on a computer

        • +5

I have two boys who have been playing Minecraft for about 5 years, and have never asked for any in app purchase. Minecraft is probably the best value kids game you will ever get them, even at full price

      • Not just marketplace. In physical stores too!

    • +3

It's probably the best value game on the App Store even at $10.

  • Will this work for my 1TB M2 and R1 Apple Vision Pro?

  • +19

    15th year anniversary.

    THE WHAT?

    crumbles into dust

    • +5

Remember when it was the new trend and people were impressed how much crazy stuff you could do. Most impressive I have seen was someone making a graphics card and eventually a computer.

Think about it: a computer, created and running inside a game, that’s running on a computer. Basically a virtual machine in created in a game. My mind was blown to say the least…

      • +2

It was a big ‘bruh’ moment to be sure

        • +3

          were you also

Playing some b-ball outside of the school?

      • +4

There was also someone who completely remade Pokemon Red on a Game Boy Color.

        https://youtu.be/H-U96W89Z90

        • holy moly lol

        • +1

Absolutely insane isn’t it? Yeah now that you said it, I remember people “loading software” on to the “computer” they made inside the game.

          Humans are amazing!

    • If it's any consolation, 15 years ago Minecraft wasn't really a game as we think of it.
Mid 2010 was when infdev started to become compelling.

  • +2

It says in-app purchases. Is it just for the add on and stuff?

    • +2

      Yes.

  • Silly question, but if I buy this on a parent's iPad, can it be shared through family sharing on my kid's iPads without having to buy it again?

    • +2

      Sure can!

  • +6
    • I thought this version was discontinued….they kept sending me email notification with deadline to upgrade to windows version for a the longest time

      • +4

The day Java edition gets discontinued is the day I quit Minecraft forever. Maybe you're confusing the deadline for transferring over your Mojang account to a Microsoft account?

        • You’re right.
I confused it with the mojang account transfer

    • There's no way to transfer stuff from one account to another is there?

Years ago the kids starting playing on Minecraft that I migrated to my Microsoft account when forced to.
Now they are older so wanted them to play on their own account so I don't have to log in my Microsoft account on their machine.

I know I can't transfer the license to a different Microsoft account so I could buy again but I don't really play so not sure what is tied to the account.
Used some Microsoft Rewards points for Minecoins for them a while back so they bought something with them.
They don't play public multiplayer worlds so I guess don't need to worry about any progress lost there.

      • Using their server subscription method (realms) I believe you can - also with the free 30 day trial.

That's for a world - as for purchases - I doubt it - that would all be tied to account

        • Should be ok for worlds as they'd only be locally saved ones they played.

Found this on the "missed migration, too bad" page saying "Your capes and skins were tied to your previous Java Edition account" so I'm guessing that's what they'd stand to lose for their bedrock version too

  • +1

Minecraft is a chill and time-sink game last time I played it…Java pc version + LAN mode, building stuff together circa 2012.

Nowadays - it’s better enjoyed with a controller and a big TV - lounging. (Rather than on a smaller screen or touch screen, and bending your neck upwards/ downwards/ backwards…etc you know how it goes.

    • +7

Can’t believe it hey back in 2012 my friends and I would use hamachi to make a virtual lan for Minecraft and like 8-10 of us would play till like 4am, sleep 2-3 hours then go to work our casual job or go to uni… those were the days

  • Worth it when I have Java and Bedrock editions already, just for portability?

    • Yeah it's 3 dollars. just get it

  • +1

Xbox version also 1/2 price. (down to $15)

Not really saving $7 when it's pretty much subscripting to the myopia epidemic. Seen this happen first hand in the family. Sure, some might dismiss that suddenly everyone staring and focusing insanely on tiny screens is just a coincidence of the myopia epidemic. You decide.

    • My kids will only get the ipad one day a week

      • +4

        For like, 24 hours?

    • I've been staring at close screens nearly all day every day for decades, and while my long term eyesight seems iffy to me, doctors say I have perfect vision when I asked for a test. Are you sure this isn't the type of pseudoscience which tends to run rampant online?

By the time kids today grow up we'll probably be able to rebuild our eyes overnight with a button press or something, given how ludicrously fast machine learning is increasing in intelligence and capability each year.

  • +1

I know the app says for 9+ years old, but would it be ok for a 5yo? Is there any kind of learning from this? I have no idea about the game but my kid has been asking for games as we only have educational apps on our iPad.

    • +4

Age ratings are there for a reason. I've played Minecraft a lot and I wouldn't let a kid aged 5 play it. Play Lego or Play-doh with your 5 year old, don't let the iPad be the babysitter

    • +1

If they're going to be playing a video game, I can't think of much better for a 5 year old. Might be a bit tricky for them, but they probably won't mind.

    • My 5yo started minecraft around 4. Nothing particularly scary in creative/peaceful modes.

    • Yes mine started around then

  • Any way for me to buy on the iOS store/ account without having an iOS device?

    • -1

I mean if you did, what are you even going to do with it? If you don’t have an iOS device, you can use it anywhere anyway…

      • Future iso devices?

        • +2

          ISO 9001 compliant device?

        • Unfortunately not. However, can create create your own iCloud account, borrow family/friend's phone to log into just the app-store with that account and make the purchase, and logout.

    • You can create and sign in on a friend’s iOS device, buy it, then sign out. I don’t think you can do without a device

  • +3

This posted prompted me to want to play the PC Minecraft that I bought in 2011.

Just searched my emails to find the original email and download link … it turns out that I had to migrate my account to a Microsoft account before a deadline last year (which I never got an email about - and somehow missed all news of this), so now I have no option but to re-purchase the game to play on PC. WTF!

I was going to buy this iOS version to test it out, but now they can get F'd.

    • +2

Hold up. I bought a Minecraft before it became popular too. Are we seriously stolen from?

      • +1

Looks like it's true. Wow. Guess I'll be letting my game pass lapse.

    • +1

There was plenty of time but at least try contacting Mojang support and play the ignorance card, they might still help.

from a quick google "All remaining unmigrated accounts will be deleted in March 2025"

      • A finite amount of time for something you own infinitely is not "plenty of time"

        • +7

Believing in the digital ownership lie is your first mistake. I hate it too but I don't make the rules.

      • +1

Worth a shot but doesn't look promising

    • They would have sent you multiple emails about it, maybe you deleted them by accident?

      • Nah I searched my inbox and I never received any emails (only the initial purchase and PayPal receipt). It's possible they went to Junk and got auto deleted…but not likely, as the email address used is still my main account, and I keep on top of Junk for promos etc.)

I'm really surprised I missed the news in general, even without the emails though.

We'll see if the Customer Support can do anything given I still have the receipt - which was sent to my Hotmail/Microsoft account that I would have migrated to.

If the game was totally delisted I'd maybe understand, but it's a bit shit if they're still selling it - surely they can give me a promo code or just add it to to my account.

          • @ldd-mn: I've read some people didn't receive emails if they only ever logged in via their username (and not email) so that would apply to me.

            Customer service just said:

"After reviewing your account, I can see that your Mojang account was not migrated, for a bit of context, as of December 18, 2023, since everything now requires a Microsoft account, at Minecraft Support we cannot assist anymore with old Minecraft log in issues.

We offered players who missed the migration window an opportunity to claim a new copy of Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC as a one-time courtesy. If you missed the opportunity or chose not to claim this copy, any old Minecraft accounts will be deleted along with your personal information.

The best solution at this point is to check if you have a migrated account or create a new Microsoft account and purchase the game."

The annoying thing is, I have proof I purchased it and I will be migrating to the same Microsoft account (Hotmail) that the receipt was originally sent to in 2011. It's about as obvious as it gets that I am not trying to scam them.

Anyway screw them, I'll play it on a used console version or find an alternative source before I buy it again.

      • Most of the emails that I received said nothing about having a hard time limit to migrate the account or else permanently lose access to the game you paid for.

  • +1

Less than a dollar on my Indian account

    • +2

Not sure why people are negging u. It's a valid bargain strategy.

    • I was about to post this.. it’s 49 INR

  • +1

    $3.29 on andriod now

Does this support family sharing? I won't play it but I'll get it if my kids can

EDIT - I can confirm it does support family sharing as I just realised we already have it and the kids have been playing it using family sharing. Must have gotten it many years ago

  • +1

Glad I bought it on Android for 99cents back before Microsoft took over, and we still gets updates over the year, it's such a good game.

  • Gotta spend my expiring Google Play credits on something I guess…

  • If I have a 2 year old and don't plan to let her play this until she is 6, should I get it now at this price or will there be a better game in 4 years?

    • +2

I'd go now. This won't die.

  • I posted in one of the others:

Is this game good for my kids??

Generally yes - but at that age (7-9) I would have thought you'd know if you're kids are into it. My kids, as with their Pokemon interest, became obsessed from their friends being involved first.

Game is okay - but you should guide them a bit as it's a free-form exploration or building or crafting game. At least my 6.5 year old has a hard time setting his own 'goals' to achieve, and gets distracted just trying to kill things.
Nonetheless with a guide book he seems to think he knows all about the mobs and lore/items, with out actually having achieved it.
Same as his interest with Pokemon haha

Minecraft is generally less insiduous/exploity (loot-boxey/gamblery/slots) than Roblox, and is less violent than Fortnite. So gets my vote of approval for younger kids - caveat above aside.
My 4-yo just potters around and gets stuck constantly but still seems to enjoy it. His hands are a bit small for controllers still so has a hard time navigating, whereas my 6yo has got the hang of it after a good few days playing it, albeit finds it hard to do multiple things at once (like run and jump, or run, jump and attack). That will come with time I guess.

Most of my kids' friends play in creative mode (no threat - unlimited blocks) but I make mine play in survival (haha).

You can also setup a server if you are that way inclined to play with them from another console/computer and it can cost nothing, with Aternos. This is advanced however.

  • Looks like it's half off for switch now too.

[Switch] Minecraft Digital $19.97, Minecraft Deluxe Collection $24.97 (50% off) @ Nintendo eShop
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/846137

  • Now that I’ve got it loaded, how do I start playing? Everything seems to be locked or wanting you to pay or sign up for a free trial for 30 days.

    • +1

Explore infinite worlds and build everything from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles. Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off dangerous mobs.

    • +1

Start a new survival or creative world.

Beware - there is no tutorial so perhaps look up some starter guides on youtube - you probably don't want everything spoled for you, so go at your own pace.

  • I’ve got a question about the purchase, I have paid and purchased and downloaded then I deleted the game as I was not planning to play but purchased as it was on discount, it has showed payment history in my account but when I want to down load again on my phone it seems it’s charging me another 2.99. Do anyone know what happened?
