Sadly, the owners of Van Diemans Ink have decided they want to become Southerners and are moving to Hobart. However, the means North Tassie's loss is your gain as they need to clear out some current stock before they go.

I often get asked what their ink is like. My quick thoughts:

  • Generally well-behaved in pens, smooth flowing, doesn't suffer nib creep too much.
  • Medium dry time, lefties may want to be careful to avoid smearing.
  • Soaks in well on fountain pen friendly papers.
  • Doesn't feather on most papers.
  • Minimal bleed-through, but some thin papers may show shading with darker colours.

      Some Van Diemans ink can be quite dry, but that can be a plus if you don't want a fire hose. Noodlers I'm personally not a fan because of QC issues and the fact they're filled to the literal brim so you're bound to spill some for a new bottle.

      Personally a fan of Sailor (from Amazon JP) and Pilot Iroshizuku line on sale. Diamine is another good affordable option.

        Yea, I am facing lot of issues with the Noodler's bottle. Not been a single occasion where I haven't spilled the ink.

      If you want to try a super-saturated ink with lots of colour then give Robert Oster a go. Equal performance to Noodlers, IMHO, and also a dinky-di local maker who hails from South Australia.

      That's easy to fix - just buy more! I forgot to add in the original post (will fix that now) if you buy 10 bottles then you'll get a free bottle of the special May Fountain Pen Ink.

    Just out of curiosity I did a figure search on how much other countries pay for ink.

    A really cheap one I found was for about $0.50c.

    I'm surprised ink is so expensive. I haven't used ink in YEARS and would like to go back to it.and recommendations for an entry level ink for a Lamy?

      Cheap ink is great if you pair it with a cheap pen you don't care about, but I'd recommend avoiding it for a pen you care about. Disregarding the ink's performance alone, it can result in clogging, fungal growths, dissolving the feed…I've seen all sorts of horror stories. If you want a generally well-behaved, if not overly exciting, ink then a good one to try is Waterman's. It's widely available, comes in a range of common colours, behaves well on most papers and, most importantly, is pH-neutral so won't do nasty things to your pens. Lamy's own range of inks are good, too, I have a couple of them and they make an appearance from time-to-time in the rotation - the other big benefit is if you want to use cartridges then theirs would be guaranteed to fit your pen.

      I think what we really need here on OzB is a good ol' fashioned Ink Exchange. I know I've got far more ink than one person could reasonably use in one lifetime (maybe 2 or 3…) so it would be great to share some of it around. Hmmmm…watch this space…
