If somebody is confused how this is a deal, recently olive oil from Europe went drastically up.

A couple of weeks ago, this was the price for 1 litre when 50% off.

    • +9

Well, olive oil doesn’t grow on trees

    • +4

recently olive oil from Europe went drastically up.

Good yields on the trees this year though, prices should start dropping later this year.

      • +4

Why would the prices drop once we're accustomed to the new normal?

        • Supply and Demand…

          • +1

@jv: I think the point is more that supermarkets will take this ball and run with it, like they have done with literally every other item that had a temporary shortage, that now seems to have a permanent increase in price.

Not when independent stores drop the prices. Supply and demand will win…

              • @jv: They don't seem to be winning at the moment

                • @doobey1231: That's because supply is still low in EU.

The current year's crop hasn't been harvested yet. Harvest commences in Oct and goes through to Nov/Dec.
Then the olive oil needs to be produced, packaged and exported.

                  • +1

@jv: I mean generally though, supply and demand hasn't fixed past shortage prices.

                    • @doobey1231: It depends on the elasticity of demand, which is product dependant.

I think you'll see a pretty quick drop in prices of imported EVOO early next year.

      • especially since many arent pure olive oil.

massive crackdown a few years back caught out some suoer dodgy practices in spain.. sure it is happening elsewhere too

        • especially since many arent pure olive oil.

          The ones I buy are.

          • @jv: Are you really sure though¿

Are you buying from a source or a website rating¿

Olive Oil is up there among the top food companies fraudulenty ripping people off selling them products that arent what they are stated.

I went down that rabbit hole once.. Now sadly I am stuck with trusting only 2 brands atm. Both Ironically the same company.

a couple of weeks ago? Haven’t EVOO prices been that high for months now?

      • +1

I meant months. Long months, actually.

    • Australian olive oil not affected yet increased their price too…(profanity) them

  • Woolworths brand Australian olive oil is $8 for 500ml.

    • +2

      There’s a reason for that

      • There’s a reason for that

        Transportation costs?

  • Wife is a chef, Olive oil pricing is bad due to bad season in Europe

    • +3

      Wife is a chef

From another chef, I’m so sorry

    • That was last season.

Not much fruit on the trees due to a very mild winter.

This year has a better crop.

    • So what about award winning ones from Mudgee?

    • So how does that increase stock made in Australia

    • +1

Crazy think I paid $25 for 700ml Cobram estate last week

      • Good god, why?!

The 3L tin somewhat regularly goes on special for $39 these days

      • So this is your fault.

    • I got two of these last time
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/681794
And I (naively) thought there’d be some more left two days later but alas

  • I heard the price rise was due to the fires in Spain.

    • No, it was due to the mild winter and the trees not setting fruit.

It affected all the southern Mediterranean, not just Spain.

  • Good that I bought in excess but now I am running out, need a deal right now. I partially switched to Ghee. Or use less oil altogether.

    • +1

Try you local Mediterranean deli… You can get a decent EVOO for around $60-$65 for 4 litres (Were $40-$45 a year ago).

      • I'll try, thanks

        • +1

I bought Terra Creta 4L for $60 two weeks ago.

  • I went to buy my usual 3L can of Australian olive oil from Aldi today, and FML it's almost $50. It was around the $20 mark last time I bought it (admittedly I haven't bought it for a couple of years)

  • I suspect this is crap, adulterated olive oil, only going by memory though. The good stuff is even more ridiculously expensive than ever before.

I'm guessing demand is going to fall off a cliff and then we'll see prices lower than ever before.

With the reality of the Italy Olive Oil Mafia and the huge amount of successful stinga in Spain. that uncovered a heck of a lot of corruption surrounding so called virgin olive oil that wasnt 100% and was having things like cheap oils added to it of all kinds, and especially as my Jaw literally dropped today when I sadly had to shop at ColesWorth today and saw their Cobram 5L can of EVOO at $65, when before the proce gouging it was around $40-45, it is worth knowing what you pay for is what you get these days.

Sure… if you just want cheap oil, no worries, but if you want EVOO then, like myself, I want to know that's what I'm getting.

This is some free info for anyone interested:

    1. Bouquet- there should be some aroma when you smell the oil. Should be something interesting there, they are all different. Fruity, herby, etc.
    2. Dryness- not all olive oil is dry but good olive oil should dry your mouth, make you salivate slightly, just like wine. Anaesthetizing
    3. A burn- similar to booze, food olive oil has a burn. Just a slight hear in the throat. Again not all oil burns, but it is a good quality if you are actually tasting the oil it can be nice.
    4. On the bottle, you should see not only a country of origin, but like wine there are regions (foreign states) or denominations. But sadly this isn't infalable either.
    5. I used to believe that simply putting the EVOO in the fridge for 24 would tell you as Olive oil would solidify, but apparently that's just good for testing the amount of monounsaturated fat in the oil. There are a lot of other oils that are monounsaturated, and a lot of adulterated olive oils will still solidify (even those adulterated with polyunsaturated oils.

    6. Whereas this info is from a Chemist that was specidically dealong with testing of EVOO:
Smell your olive oil. Does it smell like crayons? It's gone rancid. Throw it the (profanity) out. Good olive oil usually smells like fresh cut grass or bananas (in our market, anyway.) Just go buy some new EVOO and smell it when you open it. Compare to crayon bottle. Youll see what i mean.

European markets with more variety smell like a whole lot of things, due to the differences in olive species and age of the olive at harvest. Young olives have a greener smell and taste, with higher kick of bitterness and pungentcy. More mature/ripe olives are slightly sweeter with a smoother finish. Both are good, it's a preference thing. Cooking with olive oil doesn't need fancy stuff (but not rancid will obviously taste better), we are talking about the type you'd want to use to make salad dressing or bread dips.

  • Good lord, its way to oily in the morning to read all that……

    • There are a few problems with what you say.
The olive oil association article you link to is an American Association, I don't think we import oil from America and it's likely our oil is bottled elsewhere, even the same brands.
Your last link is published by a "Greek Olive and Olive Oil importer", so may be a little impartial and biased.
Extra virgin olive oil that is blended with other oils can still have taste similar to what you describe.
And Coles do not have 5 litres of Cobram Estates oil, it is 3 litres.

      • The olive oil association article you link to is an American Association, I don't think we import oil from America and it's likely our oil is bottled elsewhere, even the same brands.

Although this is true, it isnt tye only source of this type of information. I originally heard about it through 'Michael Mosley' (famous for Fast 800 Diet), and looked into it further at the time.

Your last link is published by a "Greek Olive and Olive Oil importer", so may be a little impartial and biased.

Could quite well be. I was a very quick link search, but it was more to point out that it's a well know issue worldwide (supply to little for increased demand caused).

Extra virgin olive oil that is blended with other oils can still have taste similar to what you describe.

Im no expert, so what you say is possiblly true. Again. better than having nothing to gauge them with in a way.

And Coles do not have 5 litres of Cobram Estates oil, it is 3 litres.

Corect.. My bad.. Which sadly makes th price increase eveb worse, right?.

I do tend to only focus on unit prices and off memory, even after The Great Covid Price Gouging War' began I recall that I was looking for prices less than $11.33/kg to be called a bargain.. Which means we were paying just under $40 for a 3L can.. and with this new phenomenonal price of $65, than means we're now expected to buy it at 21.67/kg.

        That means over $10.33/kg increase.

Which kinda makes me wonder how this could actually be morally justified tbh.

        Thoughts?

Coles brand 1 litre is $13.50 for 1 litre bottle. Everyday price and Australian made.

    • Not really. There are different kinds of OOs…

Coles Extra Virgin Olive Oil | 1L $17.00

      • Coles does it again!
        I can't post a screen grab here.
Their app lists it as I have posted above, but the website shows it as "unavailable", and a seperate listing at $17.00.
I don't understand why they don't delete the old listing when they change the price. Is it their way of luring people into their store with bogus pricing?
