      I actually prefer the Sony M900 for games, because the soundstage is more defined and long term comfort is better. The more aggressive treble on the Ad900x might also be fatiguing if you listen to too many gunshots and explosions ;) unfortunately the MA900 is not directly available in Australia.

        I have a A900X closed set. Gaming on BF3 is perfectly fine. Won't rip your head off with super hard bass every explosion, like some other 'bigger brand' over ear headphones $150+.

        Being on a computer, you can always change the EQ settings. You want to focus on your main music player, after all, that is what these are designed for.

        Long term comfort is not bad either, due to the great cushions at the top, and not so strong in-ward force at the sides. (although a little uneven if you have a large head. Force is about 3/5 at the top half of the cup)

      Bass isn't weak on the AD900X (especially compared to the AD900). It's pretty neutral. That said if you wanted something with a similar design and a bit more oomph the Sony MA900 is priced similarly and has a bassier tone.

          And you'd know the difference? If these headphones are at all similar to the ones in the review, that reviewer gives them an A+ (only 1 of 4 to get an A+). Yeh big deal you might say,but read the article before you pass judgement.

          @a recording - when you're delving into headphones of this calibre, different headphones will be suited to different stlyes of music. For instance, my m50's are bass heavy and suit hip hop and bass heavy rock. Listening to classical music on them you instantly notice the flaws of the high range cos it cant handle it. These apparently handle treble extremely well.

      They're very different headphones. The m50s are closed back and wouldn't leak as much sound, while the AD900xs are open back and will leak out a lot. Open back headphones generally have better soundstage, while closed generally have better bass compared to other open headphones in the same range. People will also say that open headphones generally give more sound quality per dollar than closed, but sound is subjective and the sound of one pair may not be perceived the same as another. This is where listening to them comes in handy.

      In the end if you can't listen to them beforehand, I think it's better to choose based on what you'll be using them for. If sound leakage is a problem and you like bass, go with the m50s. Soundstage has been said to be good for gaming (think being able to pinpoint the location of footsteps - but again this is very subjective) so if you're into that go with the AD900x.

      edit: but at this price personally I would go with the AD900x.

        Hey guys, I'm the guy who made the YouTube review linked in the original post.

        I completely agree that the M50 and AD900X shouldn't be compared, and I would add that a big difference between the two is intended use and long term comfort.

        The AD900X is a completely open design and as long as the 3D Wing headband works with the shape of your head then they will be much more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Since they have an open back design your ears will stay cool, which is great for summer.

        In comparison the M50 is closed back and can get quite stuffy. Clamping force is also very high in comparison so after a long time, especially if you wear glasses, your ears may get a bit sore.

        That said not everyone finds the AD900X comfortable. Some people on the Head Fi forums report that their ears touch the inside of the cups or that the 3D Wing mechanism keeps sliding down their head.

        You can also forget about using the AD900X as a portable headphone for obvious reasons, but the M50 is also not ideal for portable use.

        In terms of sound the M50 is a bassier headphone with a warmer/woolier tone - they are very good but at times can sound congested. The AD900X is cleaner in tone and would work a bit better if your tastes were more towards classical or acoustic. They both have the Audio Technica house sound which has a peak in the treble to highlight female vocals. It's quite nice.

        If you have the AD900 just know the AD900x is bassier and an overall improvement! This is a good price but Tenso forwarding from Amazon Japan is reliable and easy once set up.

        Luckily there is a healthy trade forum on Head Fi so if they aren't to your tastes you can always try to sell them off. :)

        I've haven't heard them personally but from what I've read the bass on the m50s will sound deeper, extend further and will be more emphasised as the mids on the m50s are slightly recessed.

        edit: just realised you were asking about the closed version, in which case I wouldn't have a clue.

      Apples and oranges. Yes they're both headphones but m50's are bass heavy, these favor mids/treble and hence suit different styles of music. Also you might find these underwhelming without amplification.

      Sorry Cant help but say what a stupid question this is @ the m50 killer. If you did not 30 seconds of googling you'd see that these headphones are $400 in Aus. retail shops so comparing them is a joke. They are also different in many ways to the m50.

      Use your brain a bit.

      I've had my AD700s for 4 years, it's still just like it was when new, not a single fault or scratch. The design is solid.

      Build quality on higher end AT cans is stellar. The AD900x is no exception. That said the 3D Wing headband mechanism is structurally delicate (not built badly though) so if you sat on them or something they would break. They will survive drops and other general abuse very well :)

      I have some ATH-A900TI's which were a limited release I believe and they are absolutely fine. I dare say they feel more solid than my Sennheiser 595's overall. I'm sure if you wanted to you could bend or break them, but the force required to do so would likely be equivalent to that which would cause most headphones to fail.

      The way they are designed means I'd never wear them on the road however, more so because I don't want a large halo over my head as I walk about. Love my model for indoor use however. Might be worth adding mine are very comfortable, and I'm sure these are similar.

    Had a pair of A900X (same model but closed , These are open) for about a year now . Got them from Amazon Japan on release and for the money are very good IMHO . They sound great with fast deep bass but not as big as the "enhanced bass" of Dr dre's and their ilk .

      Onboard sound isn't so bad these days, just about anything that can do native 16-Bit 44.1KHz (CD rips) would sound alright. Just depends. If you need, can always get a Fiio E07K DAC. Not THAT expensive.

      Open or Closed - Yes they sound different. In my opinion, open air sounds better.

      I continue to buy closed sets because I bring them out on public transport and listen to them at night. Don't want my housemates to come at 1am and knock my door down…

      Bought from DWI many times (Only camera/parts though). Never had a problem. Delivery was always timely (As timely as it can get from HK). Box dint's sure, but packaging always secure enough that product was never damaged.

    I would be cautious purchasing these form Hong Kong. At this price there is a fair chance they are 'replicas'. It may not even be that the vendor is aware of it - as the quality and distribution of replicas can be very advanced these days. Headphones are a common target for counterfeiting.

      I know a lot of people buy from DWI and as far as I know, I've yet to hear people getting counterfeit products from there.

      Either way, I've ordered myself a set of these as I've got AD700s which these will upgrade. I can tell the difference if it were a fake.

        Just a lot of people not getting their orders or being dicked around forever. Or worse still having your order frozen and then asking you for more money to ship it (after 2 months of saying stock is just around the corner) because their wholesale price apparently went up.

        Oh and good luck claiming warranty..(hint: you wont get any).

          you can see from that page that they got more negative review than positive.
          Note, all the positive review are for cameras and lense.
          If you product is in working order its all good, but if its not dont expect any warranty from them. They even take compensation from the delivery company when you item go missing and not even tell you about it.

    I've purchased from DWI three times without incident but PAY BY CREDIT CARD so you can do a chargeback if they start playing silly games. If you transfer the money you have no recourse apart from traveling to Hong Kong and going Jackie Chan on them.

      Also, I actually PREFER the closed back - that way it won't annoy my wife when I am playing loud music and she is trying to watch TV. Similarly I won't have the sound of TV bleed through to the headphones.

        I've been waiting for Amazon to get stock for over a month now and they still have no ETA….So pulled the plug on these yesterday. Received an email today saying that they've been posted! So excited!
        It ended up costing me around $198 after paypal fee (2%), but atleast i'll have them in the next week or two…. Shame I didnt buy these when the sale was on…. Damnit Amazon!

    Are these guys trust worthy enough that I don't have to worry about genuine / fake, etc? Only worry I have as I hover the 'BUY' button. $155 is a steal price for the 900X. I can wait for a bit for delivery as I am in no hurry for such a good price but on the back of my mind is if this is Genuine or Fake.

      No, I would say they are not trustworthy enough. I have bought and I am worried, insofar that I might have to waste time assessing if they are fake. I'm not worried about my money, which is protected by usage of a credit card / paypal.

      You should worry about that, but it is true that you can get these headphones for this price from Japan so I do not see why they HAVE to be fake. There's no need. They can easily get genuine stock from Japan and turn a profit.

    Often grey importers will be required to source product from 'alternate channels' as the owner of the product has legal agreements with the manufacturers as to where and to whom they can sell to. In some cases these are still genuine products but are being sold secretly by a party in the supply chain - this is often the case with lenses - cameras etc which are harder to counterfeit.

    However - the ease at which headphones can be reverse engineered and manufactured leaves them open to be counterfeited. If you have a product that is easy to fake - and you are purchasing through a back door - what do you think is the likelihood of them being fake?

      Regardless, 160 is worth a punt. If they are fake I'll go with a chargeback.
