Best/Affordable Label Maker

Hey Guys,

I'm just looking for a good an affordable label maker for general home organisation (cheap label refills would be a bonus).

I'm currently considering: Brother P-touch Label Maker PT-H110 but still undecided after reading the reviews.

Please let me know which ones you own and recommend.

Thanks!

  • I would just get sticky white labels and write on them.

Like a poor person? No thanks!

      • I can't be the only one that writes something and comes back later and says "What does that say?".

Lol, would love to but i like the consistency of a font -_-"

      • I actually have a label maker and we haven’t used it in years. I’m not even sure where it is.

You could setup your printer to use the sticky labels. That way you get the consistency of the font.

  • I'm currently considering: Brother P-touch Label Maker PT-H110 but still undecided after reading the reviews.

I use a P-touch, free standing/keyboard one. No real issues with it. Battery powered, quick and easy to grab, print a label. No need to use a computer/phone to print labels.

What are your concerns after reading the reviews?

    • People comment about ribbon/label wastage? The ozb in me is hoping to find something a bit less wasteful.

But if there isnt another alternative, i'll just buy this one :)

        People comment about ribbon/label wastage?

The blank space at the start/end at times could be a lot shorter indeed to save on wastage, but it's not really that big of an issue to me. I trim them up if needed. It's more of a feature of how the tape cassette is designed/works for swapping colours etc.

I honestly wouldn't be that concerned if this is the biggest issue. Buy the tape cassettes from ebay/aliexpress. Way cheaper and just as good as the brother branded ones. They seem to last for ages. I got 5 TZe for $18 delivered from ebay last time I got them.

The only thing I would say, is get one with a 'normal' qwerty layout as its far easier to use than that OMFG why did they use this alphabetical order keyboard layout!!

      • I have a P-Touch older model, and there are settings on it where you can reduce the margins. This should slightly reduce the wastage if that's a concern, but probably not by a huge amount. I've had it for years and I still use it. I did also buy some fancier label colours like black on red, black on clear, white on pink…but never use them.

I've got an old PT-1100. For ultimate OzBargainness I set the margins to off, print dual lines with the smallest font and use the repeat print function so it prints them all at once with only a small gap (this is for making multiples of the same labels of course, name tags for the kids stuff usually.)

Think I'm still on a genuine cartridge I got cheap years ago, but when that's finished it'll be generic ones from China.

I printed a sample character in each font size on a label and stuck it to the back of the machine because I always forget how massive the default size they use is.

I have a p-touch and got a nimbot D110, the Nimbot is way better to use and prints nice little notes. Whislt I like both, Im using the nimbot much more as I like the smaller labels

      • Not sure they are really equal, one is a thermal printer, while one isn't. The p-touch labels can get wet without issues.

But each to their own. Use what works best for you!

      • I recently got a Niimbot B1 to print larger labels. While I like these little thermal lables, the DRM on the Niimbot is a PITA and they are purposely crippling the output with third party labels as you can see here.

I haven't seen many other thermal printers as compact as the D110 for small labels though, but if you're after something larger I'd look at other brands that dont force you to use their consumables.

P-Touch is a thermal transfer printer so the labels should last much longer. Direct thermal labels are generally used for short term though I think they say they should last up to 2 years.

I just use a Dymo $40 unit, and buy generic labels off ebay. Much cheaper than OW.

    • buy generic labels off ebay

genuine labels are cheaper when purchased on clearance sales.

      • Yes, but I very rarely see any pop-up?

    • They have poor adhesive that unstick after two years time.

I use an old Dymo one that runs off AA batteries, still works. I get the plastic refills off ebay and there's no noticeable difference.

  • They all waste labels as part of the design.

Can beat them a few ways:

    Buy generic cartridges
Print multiple labels at once with your own spacing and cut them up with scissors

    • They all waste labels

I just keep the end bits and sticky tape them together and reuse

      • Lol if only that would work

Really, knowing @jv it's splicing and editing old VHS movies from Caballero home video.
BTW I hear there is a certain Civic Video that is missing 27 movies not returned from the late 90s.
        ;)

        • Yes, all the Police Academy ones never got returned.

  • im using nimbot d110 for set label sizes
dymo label manager 280 for no set size length on tape

there was a sale with the nimbot not long ago for 18 dollars?
its 23dollars at the moment with a roll of labels
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005698123614.html?source…

if its just household things like kitchen pantry spice bottles of folder labels i'd just get the nimbot and then get the rolls of label sized to what you want
if you need longer text i would get the tape versions. ie. brother/dymo
the only thing i can think of with the cheaper 50 dollar range brother/dymo is you cant plug it to a pc as a usb printer i think. the next step up is the 100 dollar ranges. bought my years ago, may have changed now?

  • PT-H110 (among others) takes TZe tape (up to 12mm) which is fridge, freezer and dishwasher safe. Other models can print on the wider tapes and connect via USB or bluetooth (desirable).

  • I got PT-H110 weeks ago, good unit and can use 3rd party cartridges.

  • got a Dymo Letratag XR from 2005 thats still kicking, if longevity is hwhat you're after

  • Just got the bluetooth dymo. $55, use your phone to type and design. Simple, uses standard LT cartridges (the paper tape ones are cheap, can get off brand for super cheap).

Otherwise spring for a label printer (or assorted sticker print sheets)

    • Glad I read this post and saw your comment. I was completely oblivious to the fact that there was such a thing!
Have been using an old 100H and it was annoying to use due to the keyboard layout and tiny buttons, (old age and failing eye sight, lol).

Anyway, had a quick play with the app then ordered one. Thanks.

  • DYMO Xpress Embosser because I like the clicky sticky from the decade of my birth.

  • I have been using a Seiko Smart Label Printer for at least 20 years and wouldn’t be without it. I buy cheap labels on eBay and it never fails. Highly recommended.

  • I have been using a Brother P-Touch Cube PT-710BT and it's been a real disappointment. Have used it with genuine Brother cartridges of all different sizes/textures, and randomly, the cartridges will jam - the tape will just keep 'backing up' and not come out. With the cartridges at $30 a pop for genuine, it's pretty disappointing though I'm not sure if it's the label maker or the cartridges that's the problem.
