Best Generic Cleaning Products

Hi all,

What are your favourite generic (i.e. colesworth and aldi) cleaning products?

I'm using Aldi dishwasher tabs and was wondering if the colesworth branded ones perform any better/worse to save myself a trip to Aldi.

I'm also struggling to find a generic alternative to Omo Ultimate liquid in terms of cleaning power and freshness. Have tried almat powder and my washing doesn't smell fresh at all. I also find it doesn't clean as well.

Curious to hear what people's favourite generic brand cleaning products are such as:

  • dishwasher tablets
  • dishwasher powder
  • laundry detergent
  • 'napisan'
  • hand wash
  • shower cleaner
  • dishwashing detergent
  • multi-purpose spray

With interest rate rises I am looking to minimise my expenses as much as possible without compromising on performance. Also keen to hear your thoughts on best value toilet paper, body wash, hand wash, nappies (particularly pull ups) and baby wipes. Not necessarily after the cheapest product, just the best product for the price.

Thanks!

Best value and working dishwasher tablets - finish 110 lemon pk, or aldi cheapest ones.
Just make sure you cut off a bit (a third to a quarter) to chuck in your dishwasher main body (and put the rest in the regular delayed release compartment) so it gets to work in the pre-wash stage. Youtube will help. Get from chemist warehouse or reject shop, price matching.

Laundry detergent, the power of FAB (7.5kg in big w for $26 every day, or better specials elsewhere) is 1 scoop fab = 3/4 scoops omo ultimate. So you need to use more, but $/power far outweighs the benefits. This is based in large-scale nappy cleaning community research, where actual cleaning power is important.

    Napisan - aldi.

Hand wash - would you consider bars of soap? Cheap alternative. Liquid seems like a bit if a luxury imo. People also make their own/dilute it, just look up palmolive foaming liquid deals and read the comments.

Shower cleaner - if you mean grout, home brand bleach does the job well. Bunnings or your local IGA. Dont get branded bleach. If you mean streak-free cleaning, not sure.

Dishwashing detergent, we just wait fir killer deals on morning fresh. Havent found anything that competes with the potency. E.g. bunnings $2 for the big ones.

Multi purpose spray - really, most grunt work is done by water alone. Spray muck with water, wait a few mins, then come back to it.

    My suggestions.

Thank you so much! This is fantastic. I will definitely give your suggestions a go.

    • Have you used the FAB liquid? Is it comparable to omo and the FAB powder?

Also, any suggestions for floor cleaner?

My dishes come out spotless with the $3.90 Woolworths or Coles dishwashing powder (appears to be the same product rebranded). Spending any more would be money down the drain for me.

    • Thank you. I will give it a go. Have you tried the aldi version?

I haven't tried it but I find Aldi products do very well on price/performance so I'd consider it.

    • Great prices, i think ill switch to this instead of the tablets. 1 box if 110 tabs = 2kg, this is way cheaper.

Curious to hear what people's favourite generic brand cleaning products are such as:

    Dishwasher tablets: generic citric acid
    Dishwasher powder: generic washing soda
Hand wash: bulk unbranded soap from soap-making suppliers
Shower cleaner: citric acid to descale, bleach

most cleaning products are basically 1 or 2 cheap chemicals. stuff like napisan is arguably worth it to avoid the hassle of diluting a concentrated h2o2

    • Thanks for this. Will definitely try it out. Where do you buy the products?

Recently I bought some from a small local hippy store that sells organic food and cleaning products, but i've also ordered stuff in bulk online at various times. Sorry, don't recall names, but if you search "bulk 1kg X" i'm sure you'll find retailers.

    Vinegar
    Bicarb
    .

    • I wish I could use this combo for all my cleaning needs but not sure about washing my dishes and clothes with bicarb and vinegar. Do you do it?

If you dont want to make your own, look at commercial products - you might have to buy 5 or 10L but its much cheaper. https://xo2.com.au/ for example (there are many many others, not a recommendation)

Otherwise plain dishwashing detergent works great as a general purpose cleaner (diluted in a spray bottle, you dont want it too strong or the soap residue could make surfaces slippery), citric acid for descaling, home brand disinfectant for, well, disinfectant. Try and avoid bleach other than for mould, its too risky on you and if you spray on the wrong place by accident (and if you use a variety of cleaning products, say vinegar, then spray bleach over it later on, not ideal).

there is also this https://wunder-mom.com/magic-cleaning-solution-can-make-home… I have made that and it works, but I couldnt really tell the difference between it and just diluted dishwashing detergent for 99% of things. Better on soap sum and hard to clean areas but not general surfaces.

or 1 cup baking soda, 1/3 (or 1/4) cup dish soap and 1/3 water.

These are all cleaners obviously. For dishwashing then powder is usually a lot cheaper.

    • Thank you!

For streak free cleaning wipe dry with a microfibre cloth or paper towel.

If you're cleaning computer/TV screens use demineralised water which evaporates without leaving any marks.

    • Thanks for the tips

(bearing in mind a lot of the comparisons come from FB comments, not factual data)

  • For better cleaning results and to use less cleaning msterial, I often pre-clean with rags and newspapers / magazines/ old mail:
-Greasy pots, tray plates- then into dishwasher
    - Dirty benchtop, stovetop, splashbavk, instantpot slow cooker,

Sometimes i just use hot-water, eg rangehood filters, then into Dishwasher 75Degree celsius

For dishwasing tablets, Miele gave us 3 packets and I found it too potent.
So cut them into halves and still have 2 packets now. Hubby prefer the powder type.

For final touch for benchtop, splashback, cooking appliances, I use Dettol. I love it but not everyone will :-)

Seperate dirty, greasy, muddy clothes, tablecloth, curtains, and soak them in water first, maybe hot water if needs be, then soak with bapisan or bleach.
