Are There Car Buying Services?

Going to be in the market soon for a new or used car.

Few years back used Macqarie Vechicle Buying complimentary service where you tell them specifc car you after and they would check on quotes from various dealers and come back with best options. Takes the hassle out of negotiations, etc. Looks like they have stopped that service.

Just wondering is there are any alternative services there?
Also say you pick the car you want, what is next step? I guess tricky thing now is the stock availability. So, calling around dealers is not good idea.

    Motorscout is pretty good

    • Have you had experience with that?
I did see them but not sure then how much they pressure you to go with their choice.

I have used MotorScout, they are excellent. They saved me 11% on my last vehicle when I struggled to get even a 5% discount myself. Easy to deal with, no pressure at all. Just tell them what you want, what colour, what options and accessories and within 48 hours you'll have a few quotes to pick from. After that, you deal directly with the dealership. Highly recommended.

Yep I used them, was easy. Just make sure you know exactly what you want including extras/accessories

        • Thanks for the feedback. I will try them out once work out the car.

I'm guessing they work like mortgage brokers where they take commission from the dealers?

About 5 years ago, i used one but didn’t actually go through with the purchase through them as it was the same price as I was able to get

I’d imagine nowadays, there’s not much wiggle room for car prices, and what the listed price is pretty much it. I think you’ll only get a “better price” if you trade in a car (eg; instead of $4000, they’ll offer you $7000 on the trade in)

      Except you’re probably still losing.

Dealer A will discount the car you’re buying by $0 but offer you $7,000 for trade in. Dealer B will discount the car you’re buying by $3,000 but only give you $4,000 for your trade in. Dealer C will probably give you $3,000 discount on the car and trade in for $7,000 but you’ll be signing a finance contract with a 10% interest rate and a $12 fortnightly admin fee over 7 years.

  • Car brokers normally get Fleet pricing.

  • Steered my dad to the carexpert one, was told it was useless. They put him in contact with a dealer 500km away and didn't even get him a price on the car (despite providing specifics e.g. colour, model, spec, accessories)

I’ll do if for you. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine to be an absolute flog to car dealers when buying a new car or tagging along with family/friends.

My qualifications include selling a car back to a dealer for more than I paid 2.5 years earlier and never losing a battle to a ming mole to purchase add ons. I once went over a contract of finance with a friend in front of the finance lady and tore their shitty T+C, interest rates and additional fees to shreds and she admitted it wasn’t the ‘best deal’ but they provide a better service. I laughed.

    • How much are you charging?

    • I like this. We'll get along swimmingly

have you considered sexualising your services?

      • I'd pay to watch that without the sexualising…

  • Since pegaxs isn't here to plug him yet - AutoExpert… /sarcasm

In all seriousness but, check out your local car brokers. When I was in the market ~2018 I wasn't getting much from dealers (playing games like asking me to write down a figure and hand over my credit card for them to take to the principle…), so I went to a broker that was recommended to us. Gave them a shopping list of what we wanted and what we were giving (trade-in), they came back with a dollar figure. Fantastic experience - 10/10 would recommend, especially for anyone not wanting to go through dealing with dealers.

    • Didn't realise there were car brokers:).

Would you be able to share details on the one you used?

      • They're based in QLD, so probably not relevant to you since you're in NSW, but it was Milton Vehicle Brokers

        • Yeah. Thanks anyways. I can try to search equivalent

  • There's https://www.onlineauto.com.au/ which may be able to help you. I haven't used them myself.
