FYI - As with most Casio watches around this price that appear to be stainless steel, it's actually plastic. Only the bracelet is stainless steel.

Do any modern digitals have a metal case? I ended up with a 1970s Seiko for the hefty feel.

      • +2

There are G-Shocks with a stainless steel case and bracelet

      • +2

That's probably the better way to go, old school Seiko's are made in Japan too.

If I wanted a new SS digital I would buy the resin Casio World Time then buy an aftermarket SS case but it's going to cost a lot. Info is in the description of this old posts.

Also recently became aware of SKX case mods.

More Casio watches in the sale here.

        • Nice!

I bought the MW240 a while back to use as a beater when working outside. It's great, very legible, super lightweight, and if it gets crushed or caught and breaks then I won't be overly disappointed.

          • @Chazzozz: I prefer the Casio MRW200H for a cheapo ana plastic beater, currently $35.00.

            • @WatchNerd: I was tossing up between that and the MW240-4B that I ended up getting - they were around the same price at the time, but the MW240 won out because it has a slimmer profile. I figured it was less likely to get snagged on something.

Oh man I love these mods! I think that will have to be my next piece when my mtp-1183a-1a dies.

Just remembered a few more: Bulova Computron, Tissot PRX Digital, Hamilton PSR

        • Absolutely love the brand Tissot beautiful watch’s they have. Love my TISSOT TRADITION POWERMATIC 80 OPEN HEART

      • Which one, @mskeggs?

      • The A1100D series is the first I believe.

How classy, a plastic digital watch.

      • +5

Casio is god tier in these parts, buddy.

      • So, how do you explain the popularity of the F91W-1? It seems amongst the watch fans this is a 'must have' for any collection due to its iconic status.

        • Probably the price. For $27 you wouldn't care if it gets scratched, stolen, or forgotten about in a hotel bathroom.

  • Waiting for a good sale on the Casio A700W-1A. Looks like a perfect model for what I’m after.

  • OzRRP? if anyone is paying over $50 for a usually $15-$30 F91-W or over $100 for the metal bracelet version of the same thing I have some moon property for you

  • Any Casio watches in this price range ($25 to $50) for 10 year old?

    • +4

the F91W is a good choice

      • +1

Agree on the f91. Bought one for my daughter and she loves it. They also are quite a small watch, so they don't look oversized. The history of awesome too.

  • Bought this a few days ago and returned it. Felt cheap and the strap pinches arm hair.

    • +2

I mean… it is cheap, even at rrp. But Casio is God Tier

    • Feels cheap because it is cheap. I don't have hairy arms and get a good fit - feels like I've barely got a watch on.

Plenty of other options but agree that Casio is God-tier and has lasted the test of time. Sounds like you should spend the extra on a G-Shock.

Ps no need to worry about fakes if sold and shipped by Amazon. Oh and I think people can afford to spend a bit more than on an F91W. Iconic in its own right but no point goin' too cheap and scummy.

Can anyone confirm these are genuine Casio? I know there are a lot of replicas floating about online.

Which doesn't make sense for what is already a cheap watch

    • +1

the seller is Amazon AU, so will be genuine

Have bought an F91W from Amazon before and it was the real deal

      • Thanks for clarifying!

    • -2

Not genuine, Amazon sell counterfeit products all the time 🤣

      • Unsure if this is taking a jab at my comment, which is a valid comment. Ebay and some other sites sell counterfeit all the time

  • shame no A159WGEA, one of my favorite watches I own

  • silver AE1200 out of stock. I'm still sitting on this fence. probably will be for the rest of my life.

    • Nope try here for $58.63. But if you're sitting on the fence it won't take long before you can afford something much better anyway.
All depends what you want though.

      • oh different seller? was showing out of stock for me before.

    • Hey mate, try this one. I bought the black vintage version (green map). The seller and watch is legit.

Otherwise ~$50 is as good as it gets for the AE1200 these days it seems.

Thank you! Will expand the fleet

  • I still have an ancient Seiko digital watch that I think was 21st birthday gift. Still working, 2 battery changes so far. The only issue is that is is slight too fast; after 6 months it ends up 10 minutes ahead of time. Better than than too slow though.

I wonder which would fail first in these cheapies, the battery or the watch itself? I'm not fond of "planned obsolence"; it seems horrible to squander non-renewable resources this way.

  • It still blows my mind that that's what these Casio watches cost nowadays.

I bought a Casio A158WA from BIC Camera in Tokyo about 6 years ago for 1010 yen (~$10 AUD).

    • Mine cost $27 last year, but $35 is pretty reasonable these days - what hasn't got more expensive in the last 6 years?

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/213835/112023/a158_inv…

I wouldn't go to Japan just to get one, but agree those stores are good and any excuse to go right. Got some beyer headphones and a free stand there years ago.

  • If you have schedule to visit Japan recently. I suggest visit Yodubashi or BIC Camera( a chain shop selling everything such as Hobbies, watch, Hifi, games , computer, phone). They sell Casio watch as well. And the price is almost half price of Amazon.

Depending whether these are actually genuine or not, you can usually get them for half this price on eBay i.e. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/226044856206?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • +1

Reading the reviews on that ebay listing for that watch, it appears to be a replica - I wouldn't chance it for the dishonest marketing.

      • +1

Exactly, don't support counterfeiting, they aren't expensive to sart with to be honest.

  • I found this on ebay, is this genuine casio watch?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/335078243484?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • Not sure but rating and feedback seems ok
Maybe send them a message to check and say will be sending it back if fake. The pics look similar enough to me but others may be aware of more subtleties. They've sold 62 by the look of it so maybe just got a good bulk price on them.

Casio A158WA-1 is amazing. I recently dumped my apple watch, I never used it for anything but text messages and other notifications but after a few years, I got sick of getting bugged with messages, sick of charging daily etc. I have no need of all of the health features as I hate wearing a watch when exercising. I also have a $1k Tissot, but I now wear the Casio 158 every day. I have a small wrist but it still looks a bit small so dont buy if you have big wrists (get a G shock), but yes totally God mode…totally classic and retro fun. I am very careful of my stuff, but since this is resin and plastic, no glass and a thin stainless steel bracelet, any drop, brush against a wall etc, will scratch it. Mine still perfect after a couple of months though. It is also super light so you barely notice you are wearing a watch. However, if you complain because it feels cheap, I dont mean to break it to you, but dude, you paid a cheap price, dont expect to compare with a Rolex :) For $10-50 extra, there are some nice higher quality Casios, I just wanted to dip my toe in on the cheapest first

    • If you ever do scratch it, get some Brasso metal polish, it can also polish the resin crystal not just the bracelet. I've done it before and it looks brand new.

  • Im wearing this watch more than my expensive time pieces.

Its such a fun watch !
