Model 3 Performance has been launched in the United States - boasting a 2.9s 0-60mph acceleration time, and is expected to be orderable in Australia later today.

    I predicted this only a couple of months back when BYD cut their prices in China. I was expecting Tesla to follow suit in about 6 months time but only after 2 months is a shock to me. I wouldn't buy a Tesla even if the price for the similar spec is the same as a BYD. No thank to cars without indicator stalks and swipe gear selector. I am not stupid enough to not know the difference between cost cutting/dangerous and minimalistic.

    Yeah not giving up my Tesla Y Long Range anytime soon… bloody fantastic car. Add ChargeHQ mobile app and Amber Electric Supplier (wholesale electricity pricing) for fully automated price controlled charging experience. Plug it in at home and forget about it, never pay more than 20c kwh. Thats $12 to fill my car from %20 to %80 - recommended daily charge level around city. Took it to QLD from SYD same week we bought it. Flawless performance with Tesla chargers automatically lined up on the built in navigation. We didnt use them all the time but its great that the whole ecosystem is in place Looked at other brands but the infrastructure and local support just is not there. Getting better though. Musk for all his stupidness paid 500m or so to put charger's all the way around the country. At least the rest of the industry is now catching on ref BP/Caltex. I feel for the petrol users lined up at the bowser. I still have a small call that uses petrol. Doesnt get a lot of use now we have this.

      Did about 400km in my Model 3 yesterday - two trips with a quick free 19kWh (solar) charge in between before an overnight charge (49kWh at .08c/kWr). Total cost was $3.92. I won't be driving ICE cars again if I can avoid it.

          Pay $60k for a car then pretend it is cheap fuel.

          Note: I am expecting people to start giving me the $60k you can't get anything better. In the US they actually pretend the Tesla is cheaper by putting fuel savings into the quote screen, yes you can turn that off but you need to look at TCO not just pick and choose what is favourable.

    • I've saved so much money on fuel- drive about 2000km/month, and costs me about $2/month on average in the 18 months I've had it. I would've been spending over $500/month in fuel with my old car doing the same, and at least $1000-2000/year in maintenance. helps make up for the depreciation hit….

    Given Elon Musk’s shenanigans over the last few days where he thinks he doesn’t have to follow Australian laws, I for one won’t be buying any Tesla products any more.

    If you do business in Australia, you have to follow Australian laws.

  • The best part is there is no need to service this car. The only consumables are the tires. Break pads, … nah.. never use them. Regenerative braking means you only ever touch the brake in emergencies. Sure need to change air filters at recommended times but the service is all arranged directly through the mobile app! Had our tires rotated the other day, request service in app, quote in same app in two hours, accepted quote, selected date, he turned up in Tesla service branded Model 3 and did the job in our driveway… $142 I could not believe the ease of how it was all done. Completely stress free and it blew my mind at why this has not been done before.           No idea. But i pay $800 to have the car picked up from a location + time of my choice, drop off, as well a car for me to drive whilst its being serviced.

          So, wow factor is basically the ability to call someone out to have worked called out onsite, which mobile mechanics have been doing for yonks.

          Nothing new. Though, I don't know if it has been blogged.

      • I fail to see the case you are making. Compared to normal service costs of a car in the SUV range this is stuff all. The car has very little that needs servicing. Its designed and built to run a long time, batteries@25k per annum last 20 years.

          Of course you do. Do you still remember that WA Tesla club spreadsheet on how Model 3 is cheaper to own over 3 years than a Toyota Camry that depended on really high resale values.

          Problem with Tesla drives is they use the following:
          It is cheaper to service (only if you buy a car of the equivalent value, problem is there is no $20k Tesla to put up against a KIA Piccanto)
          I charge for free with solar (sunk cost of solar, also need to be at home during day light hours, what is price of that cost, only 200km radius of travel from home)
          No better performance for the same price (lets not mention speed limits, traffic, lights and having to drive behind slow hybrid drivers)
          Cost of funds ($40k Camry you can pay with cash, some might need to get $20k loan to make it to $60k. $20k compounds in investments)

  • How much to insure in NSW?

    • $2k on average.

    • Prices vary wildly, look around. Insurance just dropped %20 on Tesla as they dont really have accidents.

      BYD is not. BYD is just Chinese Toyota. There are at lease 5 EV companies producing better cars than BYD in China. They just not selling their cars in Australia.

            I want to check if there is a built in vacuum port on the SU7 for front and back row. Save a few dollars on having to pay for vacuuming at the car wash.

        EVs will find a price equilibrium. We are still solidly in the early adopter phase and the offerings are not yet mature. Each generation brings new improvement in underlying technology and know how.

    Imagine waiting 40 minutes to charge your tesla when in a year people are fully charging their EVs in 10 minutes. New battery tech, already being rolled out in some EVs with render these obsolete swiftly.

          no, i'm saying your assumption that EVs with current battery tech will be obsolete in a year because 10minute charging speed from a 900V semi-solidstate battery is incorrect.

          1) only IM motors and Nio has announced those battery tech both not available in Australia.
          2) we have very few or no infrastructure to charge them at max output that does 10min charging in Australia.

  • I’ve read that Tesla want to increase the price gap between the “Long Range” and “Performance” variants on the soon to be announced Model 3 Ludicrous. Reason being is the performance gap between the LR and the Ludicrous will be be greater than the old model and they want customers to feel like they’re getting a significantly different product, but also paying - premium price to get it.

    Could also explain the drop of the Standard and LR models in the Model Y but not the performance. To me, it’s mentally setting the scene for the new Model 3 and the big price gap between the LR and top spec model.

    I guess time will tell!

  • I had a Tesla 3 highland on order Launch but decided to cancel the order at the last min and forfeit by$400 order money. Hurt for a while that I lost the $400 but now I am so glad i cancelled :D. Might get white interior or the 19 inch tires with the savings now :D

  • I used to own a model X 100D (now BMW iX), wanted to buy another EV for missus, tested model 3 and BYD Seal and IMO, BYD Seal is better car. Model 3 has auto pilot, but tbh, I did not use them on my Model X, using autopilot makes me more stressful, like "supervise" a kid driving and I have to be ready to intercept all the time.

      Autosteer is pretty amazing now. It’s not a kid. It’s brilliant on long drives. It’s best on freeways and major highways

      • 100% on main roads on a road trip t is excellent, can't fault it, you feel so refreshed after a 4 hour drive.
        Will not be good on City streets and roundabouts etc until we get the version they have in USA.

    Test drove one today. First the RWD then the Long Range. Came in as a Tesla sceptic. Left pleasantly surprised.
