Looking at Second Hand Car - When to Buy?

Hi awesome people, I'm looking at upgrading my car and will probably buy second hand.

I'm looking at buying in the next few months. When the best time to buy, if there is a best time to buy? e.g. is it worth waiting until closer to end of financial year?

I'm also taking any tips to get the best deal I can, probably including a trade in.

Thanks in advance.

Best time to buy is when you find the car you want and the price is right.

Make sure you buy a Toyota or your OzBargain membership will be revoked.

What should OP be looking for in regards to tyres on said Toyota?

My tip - look for a Toyota that already has a lip balm in the centre console - at least you know it's an ex ozbargainers car.

Performance tires front, Eco on the back, but must have plenty of thread.

Do tires with good thread help breaking?

Hope O.P. looks under the bonut.

Especially if it is high yielding.

    • Used Toyota prices can be a bit nutty. I wonder if the idea that Toyota's are better because more mechanics are more used to working on them is a self fulfilling prophecy. The more people in a certain area that believe it, the more mechanics in that area will naturally start keeping parts on hand and understanding the engines.

  • This is just my opinion but there's no generic across the board date to buy a used car.

Private sellers each have different circumstances for a forced sale.

Dealership TV promotions on increased value for trade-in or discounted pricing on stock are often bogus.

More important are things like the specific model of car you are shopping for. If a newer model comes out the price of older models drop at dealerships+private sales. As a buyer you can even bring it up as a point of negotiation.

  • What model Toyota are you looking at getting?

Are you talking about buying second hand from a dealer or privately? What specific cars are you looking at? I just went through the process and researched it to death so I might be able to help out! As mentioned above, personal circumstances will have an impact too.

Probably but from a dealer as I'm a bit risk averse.

I'm looking at a hybrid. The short list is a corolla or jolion. The jolion is the current favourite as a bit more space might be handy.

      • risk averse

        buy from a dealer

        jolion

        lol

  • A dealer MAY be more keen to sell at end of month, although it could be an old wives tale they need to clear inventory on a monthly basis, or only get bonus if they make xxxx in sales.

Ultimately, if it is a used car, thw best time is when the car you want at the price you want is available.

Most importantly: It's a used car. Typically there are lots of them. If the price is too good to be true, move on. If there are any warning signs, move on.

  • End of financial year.

  • Don't overthink it bud.

    From a dealer yeah, EOFY.
    Otherwise meh.

Between 3-5pm, last 3 days of the month.

  • will probably buy second hand

when one that suits your need in available.
For new / demo you could say EOFY etc but this does not affect used cars.
