    Must not buy…………….must save money…………must not buy………..must save money………

Yeah I placed an order then just cancelled. I think I'd rather wait and upgrade to a 7950x setup

      • +5

Yea - I'm torn, the old 5600x and AM4 platform is still good to go for what I do…….cant see myself changing Mobo,Ram,CPU (and likely PSU due to Murphys Law of it failing just after the new build) to go for a 7xxx series…..

Its damn hard to jump in….. Might have to drink on it……drunk purchases are always decided by the other fella in me!

        • Buy buy buy, it is your credit card. With new Ryzen CPUs, Snapdragon X Elite coming soon and M4 already announced, upgrade AM4 to the max eh?

Hahaha "I might have to Drink on it too! :)

        • Unless you do productivity work there is very little to gain from upgrading to this from 5600x, Hardware unboxed have a video on 5600 v 5800 v 5950 with the 5800X3D in there and overall it was single digit gains going from 5600 to 5950, for gaming it's only worth going to X3D parts if you want decent gains.

So at more than double the cost for a small % gained … Only worth it if you need the cores.

      • +1

I did exactly the same. It's cheap, but I reckon there will be ebay sales on AM5 gear next month.

        • I recon a 5600 will get you to am5 gen 2. 9800x3d only 12-18 months to wait

    • +2

Just wait for next gen in a couple months, you'd probably get similar performance to this 16 core CPU from an 8 core one.

      • +1

Doubt it… bigger is mostly better… besides, the new gen will cost a kidney.

        • +2

5950X is only ~30% faster than a 7700X so it's possible it'll be close enough that you can't notice a difference outside of benchmarks. Price…. I dunno, worst case scenario it's expensive but the 7000 series should at least drop in price.

      • This could be the case in terms of gaming but for many workloads (eg enterprise software development) the core count can be more important for all the vms or docker processes you need to spin up.

That said, this AM4 CPU probably only makes sense if you already have an AM4 motherboard, and DDR4 RAM, etc. The 7950x is around $828 at the moment.

Can't resist but luckily I don't have any savings.

    • Thanks for the update.

  • +2

This would’ve been great had it not been artificially bottlenecked by a low PCIe lane count.

  • I know this is a gen older but can this still run Youtube okay at 4K?

    • Hmm it’s more around the 480p mark. :(

    • +4

      can confirm Cocomelon is pixelated.

      • +3

Probaly pushing it for commander keen on high setting.

      • Wheels on the bus shows square and square

    • If a TV stick can then I expect it will manage

How does this compare with say a 7700x?

Am definitely tempted to upgrade from my Ryzen 3700x and keep most of my build intact though am not sure if my Arctic 360 cooler is enough for this beast.

But that will also keep me on am4 for the near future. Any suggestions?

    • +2

For gaming, the 7700x will be faster.

For productivity apps that can use 16 cores, the 5950x will beat the 7700x and be more efficient per unit of work.

Promise you, it was a great price when I got it.

Yeah I got a covid price Rtx3080 too, oh well

    • +1

Don't be sad, you got it when it was cutting edge tech (it still is) and got 3 years out of it, which is lightyears in CPU age.

    I have a 3700x it does everything i need, i don’t have a reason to upgrade but should i?????

    • Me too…
Just upgraded to a new 4070S with my old 3700X.

Been thinking about a CPU upgrade (to maybe a 5700X3D + a new Cooler).. but I'm not sure it would make much difference (for Gaming) since most games will be GPU bound.

It feels like a ~$900 GPU upgrade would be proportionally more beneficial than a ~$550 CPU/Cooler Upgrade (for Gaming)

      • +1

For what it's worth, I semi-recently upgraded from a 3700X + 5700XT to a 5800X3D + 7900XTX. It was primarily for CP2077, GPU alone made quite a difference as you'd expect, but in my opinion the CPU made a similarly large difference.

If you had to pick one though, as you said GPU every day for gaming.

X3D, at a bargain price, is worth considering. 5950X, unless you really have high core count workflow / usage, it is mostly FOMO or numb your brain upgrade.

I have AM4 and AM5. Honestly, if you can resist these enticing AM4 CPU discounts, save up and go AM5 (wait for the next gen AM5 CPUs obviously).

    • I mean it's just a drop in upgrade (maybe a BIOS update) and you're getting a huge increase to gaming performance, much better single core performance (even desktop performance is better) and doubling your core count. I'd also consider it a sort of end-of-the-line upgrade unless you value gaming performance, then the 5800X3D is the better buy.

    • mate! I am on Ryzen 5 1600 (bought when it came out). There is no reason for me to upgrade unless I get a pretty cheap AM4 Ryzen 7 cpu. Most intensive work my pc does is render videos from S5iix that normally takes it 4-5 minutes,

      • Unless you want to do CPU encoding you’ll get way more bang for your buck with a $320(?) 5700x3d on AliExpress.

Edit: Sorry @codename I meant to reply in line with your message not directly @ you

      • do you want to buy my 3700x? 🤣

  • Would really like this to help my studies, but argh this can wait for a while.

    • what kind of studies
