Dick Smith POLAROID DC210 5.0MP Digital Camera $6.73 - CLEARANCE ITEM

490

Thought these were a good price for a 5MP camera, with flash and LCD display. I picked up a couple for the kids, I don't care too much if they break or lose them at this price and it keeps their hands of more expensive items.

I'm assuming the quality is not great, I think the full price was only around $30. I'll update when I get a chance to try them out tonight.

Also available in green http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XG5055/

Unless George St,Sydney has more stock out the back then don't bother there as the lady after me picked up the last two from the clearance bin.

EDIT: Ok I've had a chance to test it out. The 'flash' isn't a flash, it's a couple of LEDs that you either turn on or off and are pretty ineffective at lighting up anything. Picture quality is awful. Kind of like the VGA kiddie cameras I've mentioned in a post below. The LED screen is dark, but then I'm under artificial LED lighting.

I'm hoping the results will be a little better outside on a sunny day. Whilst my expectations weren't high, this has come in well below them.

Also remember that you'll need to buy a SD memory card as one is not supplied.

On the plus side, the kids seem pretty happy. They're more interested in taking the photo than seeing the results and I've got a spare micro/mini? USB cable.

I got this for my niece from Sunshine (Melb) DSE yesterday for $5! :)

Damn, I feel ripped off now!!

      • Dont feel bad. I paid $15 (maybe $20) a few months back. The worst camera ever made. There si nothing good about it. Do your self a favour and buy a 2nd hand decent brand off ebay. I purchased it for a 2 1/2 year old and it's not even good for that.

        • I gave them an old sony cybershot a few years back when we upgraded to a better brand. They broke the zoom within a day.

I have bought some kids VGA cameras previously and they are awful, the actual picture doesn't line up with what you see through the viewfinder so everyones head gets cut off.

They have to be better than that..surely..maybe? At least there's no zoom to break.

Must have missed the post you put up yesterday to tell the rest of us, monicaaar!!!

it was the last one on the clearance table :)

  • classic circa 2005

Tempted to get one for one of my nieces but I'm known as the uncle with the cool gadgets so I don't wanna tarnish that reputation. I think I'll do what Noobist45 above me suggested and get a decent 2nd hand camera from eBay.

  • Links not working and cant search on site for it?
Great deal though for a prezzy

    • Site search didn't work for me either. I had to do a google search. Links are working fine from my end though.

      • Just called my local store and got them to put one aside for me $8.98 thanks OP

  • +2

the thing that s**ts me about these cameras is that they look like they have optical zoom and they don't, that whole bezel around the lens is just decoration.

    • True. It's 4 x digital zoom, not optical. The bezel is a cheap looking plastic too not metal.

      • +1

It's a $9 camera and you're complaining about the quality?

        • +1

Wasn't complaining, just pointing out for others as in the photoshopped image on the website it looks like metal. If I didn't think it was worth $9 I wouldn't have posted the deal.

        • I wouldnt pay much more than that to be honest. It is a muckaround camera for the kids at best.

  • -2

The sensor is crap too. Fixed-focus lens.
These cameras use the same camera module as a cheap phone.
By the time you buy the rechargable batteries and SD card, you might have got a prepaid phone with camera for less.

Sad how the name "Polaroid" has fallen to badging utter junk like this.

    • You're comparing the apples of today to those from 8 years ago, so not really a valid comparison…

    • +3

how come this got so many negs? no idea what upsets some people.

      • +2

I was gonna neg it, but I was too upset to do it myself…I'll have a couple of valium & a nice lie down, then I'm comin' back a clickin'! ;)

    • Surely for this type of camera a fixed focus lens is a given.

  • -1

Prob all gonna be hord by dicksmith staff like always… All the good stuff are always taken

  • How's the bokeh?

    • +7

      Probably brokehn.

  • The 'related' HD handycam for $19.98 that they link to on the product page doesn't look like a bad cheap gift option either! ;)

  • I bought from DSE Marion, installed the SW, but still could not get the webcam function working. Please let me know if any one got it working. (PC Win 7)

    • Oh that's a good idea, using it as a webcam! Now I might actually buy one.

  • I went to get one, did the click and collect and when i got there they said it was on recall and wouldnt sell it to me.. Im going on a rant i promise

    • +2

      rant on.

  • Thanks OP. Just click and collect ordered one.

I remember a time when 3.1MP cameras were going for $200 and were considered mainstream and 5MP cameras were top notch at about $300. How times have changed. Now you can buy one for $9.

    • My first camera was a Kodak dc3200, 1Mp and had a 10Mb CF. Fixed focus, and cost me $500. Was a great camera, took heaps of photos, esp. in bright environments. It truly sold me on digital. This whole megapixel race is a load of bollocks if u ask me, by a last Gen camera and save a bundle.

    • You're either very young or have a short memory!

Ten years ago, but seems like just yesterday…a mate thought he got a bargain with a Sony DSC-V1 and memory stick for nearly $900! Okay, Carl Zeiss lens. Big deal, it's still only 5MP.
But back then it was da bomb ;)

      • That's crazy. Your mate must have got ripped off.

        • No, he actually saved about $200 over the street price most were charging. To be fair, it was a very good camera.
Remember at the time (2003), 3.2MP cameras were ~$300.

    • I bought a Ricoh DC-4 back in 1998 I think. I think it was about 1 megapixel and cost something near a thousand dollars. The pictures were probably about as good as this Polaroid camera takes but goddamit it was 1998 and they were DIGITAL!!

    • Apple Quicktake 100 FTW!

  • It is crap do not buy it, i bough it it has display like an ancient phone it uses 3xaaa bateries no memory, absolutely not worht a single dollar, instead here at Liverpool Westfield there are several samsung cameras for $19 14 or 16mp with no box, just the camera, you have to buy battery and charger from ebay and you will have a cheap camera at the end

    • I'd advise spending around $50-$100 if you're looking for a point and shoot for family shots and the like. Avoid cheaper as…well yes they may have a 16mp count, but if the sensor can't convert it to something useful, you may as well take a watercolour painting course as that's what the photos come out like.

If you think megapixel count matters, have a look at the Nikon D40 at 6mp and tell me it's only marginally better than the camera in this deal or about a third as good as your own suggestion at considerably greater cost.

      • Back 10 years ago i would of loved to have this 5MP camera. I was plugging along on a Kodak 3.1MP camera back then. Yes and that 3.1MP camera set me back $200 on sale in those days. Some of you might not be old enough to remember that 5MP cameras were considered very good and 10MP cameras were several hundred of dollars which not many people could afford. A 5MP camera for $9 is an absolute bargain i reckon.

        • When I posted this deal I thought MP equated to photo quality and it would be similar to a 5MP camera you could have bought 10 years ago when they were cutting edge. But as Andy-Laa points out, the mega pixel count does not equate to photo quality. The quality of the photos this camera takes is no good.

I posted it under the toys category and that's what it is, a kids toy. As another poster has pointed out it might have been more useful if it squirted water. I doubt very much you would be keeping any of the photos it takes.

Is it a bargain? Well as far as kids camera toys go then I would say yes. If you think its a real camera that can take a good family snap, then you'll be disappointed.

EDIT: Looks like the mods have moved it from Toys to electronics

  • +3

So the kids would probably have more fun with it if it squirted water out the lens? ;-)

    • they should have made that a feature

  • Wonder if these are at least as good as a 5MP phone camera from 6 years ago (i.e Nokia N95).

    • Not even close. Think more like a 1.3mp webcam in poor lighting.

  • My niece will love this, cheers

  • Just got back from Dick Smith with two Polaroid DC210 blue cameras for $17.96. Was sold out of the green camera but i reckon two brand new 5MP cameras for $18 is an absolute bargain. At least i'm going to keep mine in case my current Canon 10MP camera breaks unlike some of those who would be buying them up to sell on ebay at a profit. Or there'd be the staff members grabbing them up for themselves.

  • there were 3 left at Mirrabooka WA, on a clearance table near the checkout. all blue ones

    • There were some left at Rockhampton QLD according to the online stock indicator. But all the cameras are behind a glass cabinet and i couldn't see properly into it thanks to stickers blocking the view to see how many are left. Probably not many though. The salesperson went and got me the cameras.

  • I bought it and it doesn't work. It freezes after taking one photo. :( I can't even turn it off, I have to open the battery compartment. And then, it hasn't even saved the photo! Am I doing something wrong, can anyone help me?

    • Happened to me too, but then I changed the SD card and its fine now.

  • Yeah you'll need to buy an SD card.

  • For those who need a cheap SD card for their camera. JB HI-FI has 20% off Sandisk Memory cards this weekend. I got the Sandisk standard 8GB SDHC card from JB HI-FI for $7.96 20% off and works fine with my Polaroid DC210 camera.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/digital-cameras/camera-access…

  • Still plenty of stock. Bought one for my 3 yo son.
