Nintendo 3DS @ Kmart for $149

440

Saw this in the Kmart catalogue. Seems a lot cheaper than anywhere else.

On staticice:

Target $188
TGG $199
EB $178 (Preowned)

Good alternative if you were planning to get a 2DS. Since this is an old console it may have low stock.

    Great bargain.

man this makes the dick smith deal a year ago, a "once in a life time deal"

  • +3

I got really excited when I saw this… And then I noticed it said '3DS', not '3DS XL'… Waiting for a sub-$200 price to appear for a 3DS XL!

  • +1

Wish these were the XL ones..

      • -1

        Underachieving for nothing?

      • +9

Tough crowd. Didn't think that was too bad by OzB standards

  • +2

Damn, I bought one of these for less then $100 last year

    • +1

I paid $120 from DSE at the start of the year - never thought the going rate would hike up to $200.

  • Size of the screen aside, are there any differences between 3DS and XL? Like say ergonomics of controls?

    • -4

The first 3DS (this one in the deal) has more of a solid and 'classy' build quality than the XL. Ergonomically the XL would probably be a bit better for those with larger hands, but my hands are pretty large (hey ladies) and I don't have a problem with either model.

Both models have a pretty shitty design flaw which can cause the top screen to be scratched by the bezel on the lower screen when they're closed though. Very lame, Nintendo. I still haven't forgiven them for that one.
      [edit: For the downvoting fanboys: http://techforums.nintendo.com/thread/24321 http://techforums.nintendo.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage… http://techforums.nintendo.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage… ]

      • Launch day 3DS. No scratching. 2 year old 3DS XL. No scratching.
I call bullshit that those facing the issue are placing their item under respectable use.

Just because people don't take care of there items doesn't mean its a shitty design. Sure, the lower screen bevel should of been smaller, but provided you actually take care of your stuff, it doesn't really pose an issue.

        • +1

Agreed. My 3DS is only a year old but I haven't had any issues yet. I think the main culprit would be closing the screen - which some people seem to think is alright to do at the speed of sound.

        • +5

The 3DS XL was released in July 2012. How can that be even close to 2 years?

        • it's most definitely not bullshit. i've treated both my vanilla and xl 3ds' with great care (and close the 3ds softly and carefully) and both have the issue.

try walking around with your 3ds in your pocket for a day if you're so confident that it's bullshit. i haven't actually done this, but i'm guessing that the pressure from your pocket has a good chance of causing a scratched screen.

if you think it's acceptable design that a portable handheld console is not able to be kept in a pocket without having its screen scratched then i guess you have much lower standards than me.

        • +2

I walked around with it in my pocket everyday and I've had it since launch (ambassador program master race). It leaves marks on the screen that can be completely rubbed off with a simple wipe from a cleaning cloth. No scratching.

And I've since upgraded to a 3DS XL and the 'issue' has definitely been rectified by slightly increasing the gap between the two with little rubber nubs.
          Just pays to be careful.

        • Yeah my friend had one that got scratching, pretty sure he took care of it, even had a case etc. I think it was just a problem with some launch model 3DS's, not all of them and in any regard it's been solved now.

        • I got the "markings" on my top screen, but I always have screen protectors on so it doesn't affect the screen.

    • the buttons are higher up on the 3ds XL which makes it more comfortable to hold for long periods.
but the buttons are the same in terms of texture. (unlike the 2DS)
worth noting, the stylus is in a better position on the XL.

      Other differences include;
XL doesn't have the screens pressing against eachother. on the original 3DS they press and leave lines on the top screen.
XL has a greater battery life.
Screen size affects virtual buttons that some games use, they become unusual since they're not to scale with your thumb.
Screen size affects video captures by the camera, it makes everything look zoomed in, ruining Augmented reality games.
3DS XL is not portable, which ruins features such as streetpass & playcoins.

That's all the main differences I've noticed.
I prefer my XL but can't shut down the original due to some small differences.

One thing I should say about the XL, the picture is great. The pixels are so dense in the 3DS that they're still small when enlarged on the bigger screens.

3DS XL is not portable, which ruins features such as streetpass & playcoins.

Well that's just not true. Mine fits in my pocket fine, but I always go out with a bag anyway so I put it in there, bam, streetpass and playcoins solved.

  • Almost as good as the Boxing Day Sales last year at DSE.

    A user posted up a deal before for a PS3 160GB for $148 at Big W. I think a PS3 is much better than a 3DS

    • +9

      yeah.
I love Pokemon X and Super Smash Bros 4 on PS3.

    • +7

Yep the PS3 is much better.. especially on a bus, train, plane, car waiting for chinese takeaway to be cooked. In bed waiting for the mrs or keeping in your glovebox for again waiting for the mrs when she wants to quickly buy something at the shops..

  • only pink ones left at burwood/brunswick :(

Just have to throw my 2c worth here. We don't often get happy customers posting about a product so here goes:

Son has saved all his Nintendos (which have all had too much use) and can quite happily say they are all still working fine and none have been damaged. He won't part with them. These have been saved from the Colour Gameboy and GameCube days. They all get the occasional work out with the GameCube still hooked up at Nan's for the grand-kids to use. Son opted for the 3DS over the 3DSL actually preferring the more compact size; probably gets used every day and has no problems. The Wii and Wii2 are both hooked up in different rooms.

    :o) One happy customer.

I wish I'd held onto all my old handhelds and games, I dont know what young me was thinking, getting rid of them (although probably trying to save money).

      • +1

I have, many times over the years, suggested to son to sell or trade up his old games etc for new, but he is the typical hoarder. Has retained all of those old games … every single jolly Pokemon game… Personally, I could not see the point in holding onto all these items but now they have become a collection so I guess they are here to stay!

        • +2

Old games are like old photos. They are part of your childhood and you will want to re-live those memories, even if you think you are sick of them for some years…you will go back.

My policy is one of hoarding.
All the fantastic consoles & games which will never be made again quite like they were, despite technological advancements.

        • Trouble is you hold on to them for so long you will never ever part with them. Even more so when you find that they have become much sought after for serious collectors.

Must admit Nan's grandchildren don't mind playing the old GameCube when they visit … even if it is an antique!

        • Must admit Nan's grandchildren don't mind playing the old GameCube when they visit … even if it is an antique!

Yep, good games and consoles live forever, as they should. The games often serve their role better than many of the newer titles.

Are there any working r4 cards that work for 3d games yet? I sold my3ds upon release couple months since games were so expensive at launch.

    • no. there is a gateway 3ds card, but it only works with old 3ds firmwares

    • +1

Support the developers/publishers by buying the games! The rampant piracy on the DS games is why we aren't getting as much games on the 3DS.

  • Sale started at 8am today, I was at Werribee Kmart at 7.50am, no-one else really there, only 1 in stock "Pink" no more out the back.
So went down to Sanctuary Lakes Kmart (8.10am - store empty), guess what? Only 1 in stock "Pink" no more out the back.
Brings back memories of the DSE staff hoarding sale last year!

    • yeah I called kmart last night, they said it was already on sale but only in pink.
Anyone tried price matching EB games?

      • hi yeah i called up everywhere from altona north all the way through to burwood… most stores had none, altona north has alot of pink… then i tried to go to EB games and TGG to price match… they didn't have stock left, they only have the XL…. yeah no luck…

    • buy the console and say it's your girlfriend's.
