There are so few businesses in it you would really have to go out of your way to find them.

    • Think they might be having teething problems with the list of participating businesses. I am unable to change the location away from Sydney and keep getting error messages that the pages no longer exist. Also, it says the search limits to 100 results so may need to check again when it's going properly. (It seems to be a pretty big promo so I hope there's more than the limited number you found!)

My postcode has 142 participants. If there is not much in your postcode try the surrounding postcodes.

        • +2

Tried my suburb and nearby Wollongong, none in this area. So in order to get the rebate I have to NOT support my local small businesses.

        • Tried my suburb and nearby Wollongong, none in this area.

          postcode 2500 has heaps? :)

        • Really? Not sure what's wrong but I got null by searching again.

          .

    • so few relative to what? i can't stop finding them :)

  • +12

I don't know how using a card with the highest fees for merchants helps the smaller ones at all, lol.

    • +2

AMEX have been aggressively price matching competitors for merchant fees to the point I don't think it's at all different nowadays - I'm told it's just around 1% but varies.

    • +6

Participating stores won't be charged any % fees during this offer period.

      • +1

I just got charged 3% for fees using this offer… will i get the 3% back??

        • Amex did not charge you, it was the store you shopped at charged you. You can lodge a complain.

  • +3

Easiest places to spend $20 are the dining venues but note it does not apply to online transactions. I noticed my local dentist is participating. Not worth spending $500 to save $10.

    • also private schools :)

  • +1

    Interesting clause in T&C:
"We will use your personal information to register your Card and to provide the Offer. In particular, we will:

    1. Transfer or disclose personal information confidentially to American Express, its related companies or external organisations that provide services in relation to the Offer. This includes transferring personal information outside of Australia to the USA, Canada or other countries for data processing and servicing;"

the unspoken message - 'You will be subject to PRISM'

  • Highpoint Shopping Centre is listed.

Do you reckon I can buy 5 x $20 gift cards in separate transactions, therefore getting $50 back on a $100 gift card usable at lots of shops?

I won;t be using this but it great to see a company like amex supporting local business!

    • +3

Don't you believe in supporting your local small businesses?

      • +1

I plussed the deal, I don't have an Amex is the reason I won't be using it

        • +2

Keep an eye out for a good AMEX card offer. They are worth having for all the various promotions they keep putting out.

  • how does anyone find a place that is participating? I am having no luck at all!

EDIT: OK … I've kinda worked it out…

Is it only for one week?? Seems like a really small window of time to visit 5 small shops… although it is close to Christmas…

  • Do I have to visit and spend at 5 different shops for the credits?

  • I will be in Thailand from 23 November to 30 November :(

    • Time to cancel the travel … ;)

    • +6

Maybe the girls these are all small business Amex clients

    • Give your Amex to your best friend, unless he's coming with you

  • +2

Hmm the pub near my work is one of the merchants.. I might have to visit it.

I have 4 amex cards. Hmmmm Half price food!

  • Powerhouse museum is one of them in Sydney, if you want to take your kids there.

Cool. Registered. Will just forget about it and shop as normal. Let's see if I hit a lucky $10 jackpot!

  • Is the search working? I entered Sydney 2000 and got no results, ditto for the suburb I live in and surrounds.

    • You must also select where to shop from the dropdown list - eg Dining, Shopping etc

my Amex card arrives today/Monday, i'll be able to stop skimming past all the amex deals, and start taking advantage of them

    • +1

Card arrived Friday. Time to max it out.

  • +2

Awesome, 2 cards, and my local bottle shop is in.

    winning

    • +3

On this note, if you're buying a nice bottle of something, you may be able to split the payment into two

Example: Case of Peroni - $44

Pay $22 on one Amex card, and $22 on the other

Total rebate $20, Cost of Peroni - $22 for 24 beers.

      • +1

        brilliant idea.

        • +3

you said nice bottle of something though? peroni is horrible.

  • Looks great.. will benefit up to $50.
    Thanks OP.

  • +3

Amex does have higher fees, this we all know. But at the end of the day its all about getting paid! If you want to get paid with how the public want to pay its better to pay those higher fees than to not get the sale at all.

If a small business wants to be successful then they should take the hit for Amex and get the cash flow going. I can absolutely assure you all, that those business who accept all forms of payments without adding surcharges are far more successful than those who have limitations on how you can pay.

Personally, I prefer to get paid, pay the extra fee, than to not get paid at all and not make the sale. This is the major reason why I support this post and will be finding out which small business I can buy products from.

Jamies Italian is a small business.

  • Finally figured out how to work the store locator. Actually a hell of a lot around Brisbane. Cheers

  • +2

There is at least one small business listed that I know has been out of business or closed for a couple of months.

    • +2

yes there are quite a few, contrary to

Note: Merchants displayed on the map are correct as at 28th October 2013. Merchant listings featured on the map have been derived from internal American Express sources and mapped using longitude and latitude co-ordinates provided by 3rd party suppliers.

  • +5

i wish it showed a giant list instead of just 10 shops at a time

  • +4

So, what would be the appropriate response if the designated small business tries to discourage the use of AMEX?

    • threaten them by saying "i know where you work"

  • I think some of the businesses there don't even accept AMEX? or charges a hefty surcharge can anyone confirm? (Perth)

    • some do, but is the surcharge more than $10?

    • Ya, they don't want to absorb higher rates from Amex and therefore pass onto their customers. I normally say forget it, i will shop elsewhere.

  • My local store is in the list but they dont accept AMEX…. so why it's in the promotion!?

    • +2

they are just telling you they don't so they don't pay excess cc fees

  • How do you know if you're one of the first 100,000 to register? Perhaps a successful registration means you're in / they'd stop accepting registrations once the limit is reached?

  • Does anyone know if you spend $20 at one outlet, and then $20 at another outlet that is owned by the same people, does that still count as going to two different vendors? Or would I only get one lot of $10 back? Example: Friendlies Chemist in Brookfield and Friendlies Chemist in Enex 100. (Perth WA)

  • Do you need to use your card only between 23rd and 30th November to receive $10 credit?

    • +1

Yes at those specific stores at and between those dates. You can use it any other date but do not expect and cash back.

      Regards
      Daniel

      • thanks, will definitely use it at couple of restaurants.

  • How does everyone intend to get there $10 x 5's?

My local discount drug store is registered so I am going to fill some scripts, they price match chemist warehouse whom I normally use.

There are a couple of local family run pizza type places so I am going to stock the freezer with.

Apart from that there is breakfast at a local cafe and lunch at nandoes to be had. Should be able to use my 5 up with these.

Its hard to believe these places accept amex, I hope I don't find out otherwise when I go to pay.

  • +3

Used this morning for breakfast. 30 minutes later got an email from Amex stating the $10 credit is on its way.

  • Starts today woot

  • -2

I work at a business that's part of this program. I can but things at cost price then get a further $10 back.

    • +2

      Thanks for letting us know

  • AmEx sure loves its small businesses…

  • Went to 4 different shops this morning and spent $20 or more on each of them. I already received 4 emails from Amex about $10 cash back! Fantastic!

    • +2

Pretty efficient of AMEX to send you an email at the point of sale. Now I can throw away the receipt (was in case there was a dispute)

  • +1

nandos and red rooster here i come

  • +1

As an FYI, one of my favourite local Fish and Chip shops was on the list and I could have sworn that they were cash only, in fact, going to their website stated that but when I called them up they said that they were trialing credit cards (in particular AmEx) for the next three months.

    Regards
    Daniel

PS: Mamak in Lonsdale street, Melbourne is also on the list! YAY!

  • -3

Any dining in St George area like Kogarah,Rockdale or Hurstville eligible for this offer?

  • Tried to use my Amex at Seafresh Innaloo (perth). They don't accept Amex but have Amex facilities, but the staff weren't sure of the promotion and the boss wasn't there so I wasn't able to use my card. Has anyone had a similar experience?

  • They don't accept Amex but have Amex facilities

What's that supposed to mean ? Whare are Amex facilities ?

    • +1

By facility I was referring to the terminal(if that is the correct terminology). They don't allow customers to pay using Amex, because of the surcharge.

  • I went to a listed newsagency this morning and they said the terminal did not accept Amex….

    • i contacted amex about a similar thing and they credited me $10

      • Wait what. Even if you didn't pay with Amex ?

    • Same here, @ my local Oporto's

  • Nice work from Amex (sarcastic), who charge significantly higher charges for Small Business to accept their card, than larger chains. They'll do well out of this promotion - steering more $'s toward small businesses - and in turn receiving a higher commission for equivalent $'s spent.

*If Amex were serious about supporting Small Business in Australia, they'd lower their commission rate. Simple.

Nevertheless, it is a good deal. $50 is $50, and you can't argue when someone gives you more incentive to support your local business.

    +'ive vote from me.

    • charlie123 above claimed "Participating stores won't be charged any % fees during this offer period."

    • Everyone should get off their high horse. Its their business model. Big companies are always going to have greater bargaining power. In return for charging higher commissions they have more promotions/points. if you don't like using it then feel free to cut up your card. The only obligations of a business are to follow the law and to make money. I see nothing immoral about what they're doing. If you want to support small business maybe you should pay cash so that they can avoid any kind of fees.

      • +1
      • Good point. Should definitely try to do that.

  • -3

I went to DA MING chinese Bbq restaurant at Kogarah,Amex is not accepted after dine in…WTF

  • I'm going to go to Farmer Jacks and a liquor store, other than that, I can't see much else in my area. Maybe somewhere for dinner during the week.

    • Farmer Jack's grocery shop = done
Also had a night on the drink and put the table's tab on my card to get points, turns out they're part of the promo too.
Tomorrow: Nando's (not sure if this store is included) for lunch, and a stop by an independent bottle shop.

      • Got some dog treats from Better Pets and Gardens. The 50% discount almost made their prices reasonable.
