bargainhunter on 09/05/2009 - 23:33 ¶The 5.1 speakers may be Chinese but we're not; tell'em to get stuffed.
I'll contribute to the legal defence fund of any ozbargainer who incurs the wrath of obsessive shopkeepers.

+11 voteshellrazorone on 10/05/2009 - 18:07 ¶I like everyone else appreciates the effort this user went to posting this deal … although I don't think it's a bargain.
I agree with Amar89 … there's no point spending even a small amount of money on rubbish. Even the Altec Lansing cheap 5.1's I purchased a few years ago would crackle at 20% volume (on a decent soundcard). Better off getting a 2.1 logitech set and research the specs for decent output. There's a massive difference between 2.1 cheap ($20) and reliable cheap (perhaps $30-50 range), although cheap 5.1's are a complete waste of time (no power output and poor speakers = noise).
My idea of a bargain is a good quality product at a reasonable (or cheaper) price in comparison to other retailers, not the cheapest thing on the market … otherwise 1 cent headphones on eBay would be appearing on the OzBargain site on a daily basis. Anyway maybe going to get the negative votes for this comment, but I'm not going to vote for (yes it's cheap) or against the deal (yes it's rubbish).

Thank you.
Some common sense prevailing at last. It's just typical of Ozbargainers to immediately jump on the bandwagon whenever the lowest registered price for something is posted and act like it's the second coming, disregarding WHETHER IT'S ACTUALLY WORTH BUYING to begin with.
I mean you can buy yourself an $600 dollar car or a pair of $2 dollar shoes, but would you really want to?
This hunk of junk wouldn't be worth it at 1/10th of the price. Why would you insist on buying something that in all likelihood will probably break after a few months or just disappoint you endlessly with it's shocking sound quality?
That's not a bargain. It may be cheap, but it's NOT a bargain.
A bargain is a good quality product (or quality above expectation) at a really low price. Go check a dictionary for pete's sake.
5.1's are not meant to be cheap. You need to actually spend some money (shocker) to get the benefit in this case. I've had $900 dollar 5.1 Home Theatre sets that sounded like absolute garbage (I can only imagine what this would sound like), I finally realised if you want something that lasts in the world of audio you need to spend money.
If you're seriously considering this, buy yourself a pair of reasonable quality Philips/Sony/TDK noise-cancelling headphones instead for $40 dollars. You'll get more satisfaction out of that.
+2 votesIf you're comparing the price of a Logitech X-540 (yes I have a set) at around $80-$100 and the RRP of this ($89.95) then this is a good deal.
While at $90 for these, I'd much rather go and buy the Logitech even if they were $110, but I think these are probably worth $40
chansthename on 10/05/2009 - 08:42 ¶the should also be 2.1 available as well, I believe that this is the same discount as a little while ago, I got a pair of 2.1 (same company as these) for $19.
+4 votesRandomNinja on 10/05/2009 - 09:09 ¶I wouldn't go so far as a negative vote as value wise it is a good one. HNC (Harvey Norman Computers) is a house brand of cheap and nasty computer peripherals which included mice, keyboards, webcams and speakers… this was their failed attempt at establishing their own budget house brand.
Having worked as a supplier to HN when these were first introduced, I know that the fail rates on these are very high and it looks like they're dumping the stock so help and support will be non-existent very soon.
Probably best to stick with more reputable brands like Logitech or Altec Lansing (can get 5.1 speaker sets for ~$80 when they're on special)
+2 votesxfiledavid on 10/05/2009 - 20:32 ¶i gave it a Postive, a bargain is a bargain, and 5.1 speakers at $20 a pop what do you expect? show me better speakers for $20?
also not in the area or in the market otherwise i would of at least had a look. thanks for the post.
-1 voteA bargain is a bargain? Yeah and an apple is an apple. Thanks.
A bargain is only a bargain so long as it's worth buying. Who says these are?
They are cheap. No one's disputing that. What they are not, is a good quality product for a very low price, i.e. a BARGAIN.
RandomNinja on 10/05/2009 - 22:12 ¶Way to show how illiterate you are. If you'd read properly, you'll notice I said value wise it's good, $20 for a set of 5.1? Can't find cheaper elsewhere, but quality wise, they are god awful.
I was backing up your point of view, but obviously you didn't catch that :P
tailgatinholden on 11/05/2009 - 07:37 ¶exactly what i was thinking.
anyway, by going through the paper trail… seems Amar89 hasn't even tried these speakers (apparently soo above it with some x-540's)… how can you be so committed to judging them already?
even as RandomNinja says they may have a high fail rate, some speakers will still pull through. and harvey norman is big enough to accept returns at a fair time period…
definitely still a bargain in my opinion, for $20.

If you want to throw $20 dollars down the drain there's easier ways to do it.
May have a high fail rate?
That's like saying it's not fat, it's "well-rounded".You might be content with buying products that you know from the outset have a good chance of FAILING, but when I buy something I actually want it to last and not have go through the bs of returns/refunds and then looking for a replacement. Shocking I know.
If you really need to buy $20 dollar, 5.1 channel speakers to find out for yourself that they're shyte, then you might as well stop being a consumer altogether because the corporate world will pump you dry.

Have a look here.

So in theory an in house brand sold by Harvey Norman. But a few other retailers also stock HNC peripherals. LCD monitors and TVS, Mouse, keyboard and web cam.
+2 votesYeah, it is Harvey Norman.

What's funny - the postcode on the keyboard box is a typo. It should be 1811, not 1181. :-)

+6 votesI have just 4 brief thoughts:
a) It's definitely a bargain - 2 for 1
b) The precise product might not be for everyone - just as most of this website is - if only I bought every bargain that came through this website… :)
c) Bonus points for covert-ops. This sort of bargain that us who are too lazy to get off the computers and find, should be well and truly encouraged!
d) I'm not near the store so won't be purchasing any
-1 votealexportnoy on 11/05/2009 - 16:52 ¶Does Balgaloah have any of these left?
Has anyone rung and asked?
+1 votewhy is that, blitz? only becuase you can? why is this an exceptional deal? because the OP got a photo when the shop assistant said he cannot? the deal may be available at only one store; nobody said they actually bought it; nobody knows about the specifications or warranty; it's not actually $20, its $40 for 2, so unless you need 2, you have to sell the 2nd one…
alexportnoy on 12/05/2009 - 00:36 ¶Exactly right.
Just post any cheaper-than-normal or FREE items, and let the public decide if they want to buy it or not.
No point arguing; if you don't like something, don't buy it.
But let us all know, so we can go and buy it instead!

I'll tell you why. Because this guy had the presence of mind in store to think of us Ozbargainers and the gumption to take a photo for us too. That's how we get the bargains. I don't care much about the speakers, but that effort should be rewarded.
Come on, Forrest, surely you can identify with that?
+2 votesalexportnoy on 12/05/2009 - 12:00 ¶since when voting here is for the intention or for the poster, not the actual product?
Since yesterday.
-2 votesa +ve for Amar99 for trying so hard too.
I'm now wondering if this gentleman's from, I don't know, some sort of competitors of Harvey Norman?
you dont like it and call that shit, fine, go get your pair of swarovski crystal embedded noisebox, beauty, well-priced, good quality, good availability, good warranty, good shitty "WORTH BUYING".
we on the other hand want something works-n-cheap. i'd pay $2 to buy a pencil that i know will last a month rather than spend $20 to buy a good quality good availability pencil that declares itself lasts 3 months, "With 3 yrs Manufacturers Warranty!"
+2 votesLol.
Ah the old "You have a different opinion than me, so you're a disinformation agent" argument eh? Was waiting for someone to show up with that. Real mature too.
Have you actually bought these? And verified that they work too?
'Nuff said. You're talking out of your ass like most of the people here.
+2 votesI think that you guys are arguing for no good reason… different people have different tastes and different dollars to spend. It doesn't matter, unless you are a musician and plan to play music its probably gonna do the job. Most 5.1 are designed for surround sound applications and the surround speakers don't really need to do much at all. Most of the signal/power is given to the front left and right speakers (and centre speaker).
eg. My friend bought a second hand set of speakers for $20,000, and he said it was a bargain as a new set of the same ones would have set him back more than $50,000. So everything else to him is shit! In high end sound, for every $10,000 you spend you only get a very small percentage increase in quality.
Price doesn't govern how good a set of speakers are to an individual, you have to listen to them. If you listen to it and it sounds ok to you, then go for it. If its no good, then you're one of the unlucky ones that need to spend a lot more to get better ones to suit you.
Put simply, if you don't like it read something else, don't go around pissing on other peoples postings because you don't like the product.
I was hunting for some cheap speakers and I came across these postings and find them very immature and annoying. If you have money go spend it!
Here's something for you…what car do you drive? Everyone drives a different car and depending on how much dough you have, are satisfied (usually with what you have) so don't go dissin' people who can't afford the Porsche!
+2 votesMcLarenMercedes on 14/05/2009 - 20:54 ¶Did anyone actually manage o buy these?????
Anyho, My 5.1ch Priceline ones were a steal @ $25 and yet very elegant too…….have had 'em for 6 months or so now!
