Update: Boo! Price is now $60, a $10 increase. Must have seen the demand and decided to jack it up to capitalize on it.. congrats to all those who bought it at $50.
Update: Deal is back again with an apparent 399 units left in stock. Hurry and grab one before they disappear again!
Update: ukmark says "I just got one, it said 1 in stock and I bought it. So keep checking back, maybe they have a shopping cart reserve system which times out."
Look under 'DVD-ROM WRITERS (NEW)'
Genuine Pioneer external USB DVD-RW. Great for netbooks without optical drives. $50 with free delivery.
- 20x DVD-R/+R Writing Speed
- 12x DVD-R/+R Dual/Double Layer Writing Speed
- Writes up to 40x on CD-R
- USB 2.0 (requires AC power adapter - included)
Complete with Cyberlink software which allows you to burn DVD/CD content.
With internal DVD-RWs about $65 plus shipping these days, you could order this, rip out the drive and still save $15.
According to TerminalVeloCD on Whirlpool; 'I've received my (first) four. They're all BRAND NEW. All drives have never been used / opened and still have their factory-applied anti-scratch film intact.' He gives them the thumbs up, and he's the resident DVD-RW expert.
The internal drive is SATA. Reports are suggesting it's a DVR-216 inside.
Over 100 in stock as of posting.
Update dangercharlie says: 'Registration email confirmation took a while to come through to my gmail (about 5 mins), so don’t panic!'

+1 votecanleyheights on 27/08/2009 - 11:05 ¶that was last year. this year, burner went up due to 1 of the manufacturer closing down.

lukelegend on 26/08/2009 - 22:11 ¶Don't need one but brought 2 :) MSY are saying december for stock price decrease
POWERevolution on 26/08/2009 - 22:12 ¶20x DVD-R/+R Writing Speed
12x DVD-R/+R Dual/Double Layer Writing Speed
What's the fastest speed atm?
+1 vote22x for DVD-RW, 12x is fastest DL at the moment I think.
You need compatible discs to even get near that speed, not to mention it will only peak at that speed for a few seconds towards the end of the write.
Realistically, even if this was 16x it would perform the same.

+1 votePOWERevolution on 26/08/2009 - 22:18 ¶Thanks for the info…was about to ask cuz I just registered and still waiting for their email.
+1 votedangercharlie on 26/08/2009 - 22:24 ¶Some extra info that could be useful taken from Pioneer America website - http://www.pioneer-america.com/PUSA/Products/HomeEntertainme...
- Drive will operate horizontally or mounted vertically (stand included)
- Weighs 2.5 lbs. (1.2kg)
- Physical Dimensions: W: 6.54” x H: 2.2” x D: 9.25” (inches)
hmm.. 1.2kg
That's heavier than my netbook!
Decisions.. decisions
POWERevolution on 27/08/2009 - 01:46 ¶I have a 5.25" NexStar enclosure and it's more than 1kg so I think that's right as the case is a good quality.

POWERevolution on 26/08/2009 - 22:26 ¶What happend after I add to my cart? How do I check out and make the payment???
I have no clue how to pay…any help!?edit: Ah! NVM I see the tiny checkout button now. Damn I need new glass :)
POWERevolution on 26/08/2009 - 22:44 ¶Hmmm…not saving alot but it's cheap if it come with quality case.
DVR-216 was $28.99 - $32 in Dec 08. I hope this deal come with latest drive…guess not..
+2 votesMetalPhreak on 26/08/2009 - 23:02 ¶Considering prices of standalone drives have increased to ~$60 do to the optical pickup shortage, this is a pretty neat deal :)

so this is just an internal DVD burner housed in an external USB casing right?? Looks really big and heavy
Why not pay $15 more and get a slimline USB external from MSY? Static Ice selling Liteon DVD internal for $23.60, would it be cheaper buying a USB casing and sticking the DVD in?

+1 votesavememoney on 27/08/2009 - 10:11 ¶Thanks cyssero for an excellent find, got one drive for myself yay!
+1 voteSo just to confirm. You get the DVR-216bk. Not the latest DRV-217bk in the external case? $50 is a good price considering the drives alone sell for more without the external case.

savememoney on 27/08/2009 - 10:49 ¶I just ordered a second one for my cousin, they don't offer paypal.

cyssero no doubt got this from whirlpool. it was posted here by Architectonic -> http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1264364#r... on August 18.
a post from TVCD about this:
"And guys, don't forget that the DVR-S16J inside the NU enclosure actually features enhanced firmware which allows for PowerRead, LabelFlash and Quiet Drive!
Also, the drives themselves are built on an enhanced chassis with additional sound-proofing and a nicer front bezel (piano black) compared to the plain DVR-216/DVR-217s.
Regards,
TerminalVeloCD"
dangercharlie on 27/08/2009 - 13:26 ¶Well done all those who snapped up one (or more!) of these..
For me I couldn't justify the purchase due to the bulk.. but can't argue with the price.

POWERevolution on 27/08/2009 - 17:30 ¶Try again! You can now or try to refresh or check back 2-3 mins as other just bought it.
POWERevolution on 27/08/2009 - 17:12 ¶It's still available but I think pioneer stop you buy more than 1 so they just do auto bot & put up 1 at a time.

I searched all 15 pages (by product name) and I still can only find the $99 jobbie…
Oh well, I mustn't be meant to get one of these!
Thanks anyway cyssero,, good find.Live Long and Prosper,

life is a littl... on 28/08/2009 - 14:36 ¶hmmmm, I cant seem to find it on their website…., wonders if they are all sold out, or am I looking in wrong place….
life is a littl... on 28/08/2009 - 15:03 ¶ohh thanks for that looseylu their was only two left when I oerdered but I was logged in so I guess that was my quota..lol Its taking ages to submit my order, I am assuming their servers are working overtime…

citybargainhunter on 29/08/2009 - 17:40 ¶damn, its cheap. but I already got a Samsung external, wonder if I should get one as a backup…decisions…
scozbargain on 30/08/2009 - 12:56 ¶just saw this deal, bought one for friend who has laptop with broken DVD drive that I cannot get unstuck to replace. Cheap fix as the laptop doesn't go anywhere anyhow, and no travel involved for me. As noted above registration took a while. they had 100's in stock Sunday 12:45 pm.
+2 votesscozbargain on 30/08/2009 - 12:58 ¶ps -a big thanks to poster and those who took the trouble to vote. I would not have noticed this except the voting had put it in the Top Deals.

This is a GREAT DEAL! Thanks for the poster.
I just ordered one. Pioneer clearance site shows the item, there are STILL 360 units left. As for 1:19pm Sydney time. So I'm not sure how is was 100 before around 12:45pm unless the system automatically fill up the listing. Otherwise I have a feeling maybe some of our orders might not be filled even we paid….
I ordered one anyway and if I can't my unit I hope I get my money back!
Also note that Yesterday I tried few times logging on to the site and the item disappeared under the same category around 9:30pm. I just checked this arvo and its back.
I'm not sure if this is a system issue or they intend to do it this way…
PS. Don't forget to print your receipt in case something goes wrong
some_one_some_where on 31/08/2009 - 00:33 ¶It seems the company is struggling to keep up demand and take the section offline for a while and load it up again with 300+ units and bring it back. By my rough count they must have sold 3000+ units as the section has been on and off line about 10 times! Great Deal, should receive my order tomorrow :))

POWERevolution on 31/08/2009 - 16:58 ¶Got mine this morning too!
Ordered on 26th evening. So which is 3 working days to SA is about right, the fastest non-express that you can get!!!

They seems to up the price by 10A$:

Quantity Available:490 Price: $60.00
External DVD burner connects to you computer via USB. Complete with Cyberlink software which allows you to burn DVD/CD content
Ordered Sunday night, so it would have been mailed Monday. I missed delivery on Tuesday… so technically it took one business day to deliver! They did second delivery attempt at 10am today. They use Star Track Express for delivery. Very fast.
Since it isn't actually for me, I have to wait to tonight to open it and try it out.
TeaEarlGreyHot on 02/09/2009 - 14:19 ¶It took me until Saturday to finally get the site to list them so that I could place an order.
Mine arrived (in Brisbane) this morning, so that equates to 2 business days which is pretty impressive.

Don't need a driver, just need compatible media. I've used TDK and Imation media rated at 16x to burn at about 20x. Better off burning at 16x anyway, better quality burns and only seconds slower.
As far as the missing software goes I would definitely contact them about it, sounds dodgy to me! It clearly still states that it comes with Cyberlink software, so check call 'em up and see how it goes.
POWERevolution on 04/09/2009 - 02:03 ¶WTH! Pioneer sold alots in the last few days now they increase the price!
