I bought 2* of the 16gb and both were faulty. 1 had a damaged usb port & did not charge. The other had a faulty audio port.

I returned both. Expansys paid return fees & sent replacements fairly quickly. They can be slow to respond to support tickets (up to 3 days). The replacements have both been running well for last 3 months. They look brand new & will be mint condition. I run CM12 on them & it is pretty smooth except when there is excessive writes to the flash when these lag. Generally only a problem when loading apps onto the device. The internal flash must be slow. Otherwise perfect for my uses. I run Kodi with Livetv via mythtv and it does it flawlessly. Firefox can be a bit laggy.

    • I bought 3 last time (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/154724). They ran out of stocks of 16G, hence after 3months they offered me 32G/ 3G model for the same. So worth the waiting.
2 were faulty within 2-3 weeks time, but they arranged pickup & return via FexEx, replacement was very quick. Replaced ones are working perfectly. Perfect fit as GPS in prado with Sygic. o complain so far, i am happy with this.

  • I had bad experience with refurbished Nexus 7(2102). Nexus 7 takes ages to charge even with its own charger. This tablet is slow and crashes despite official Android 5.1. I suggest stay away from refurbished ones. These are faulty stuff repacked and sold.

    • If you get a faulty one send it back. Its easy….just submit an RMA and Fedex come & pick it up from you or you just drop off at your local Fedex office. If you dont want this hassle then I suggest you do not buy but if you keep sending them back you will get a perfect mint nexus 7 eventually !

      • I bought it last year and it passed its warranty period. Initially it was ok, but after some time, it became slow and then charging issues started. Now it is on charging dock permanently and used as interface for ChromeCast.

I always planned on turning these into (live/social media) photo frames when they've outlived their usefulness for other tasks =) Basically a cheaper Instacube!

Don't run official 5.x on these, they're too slow for it, use CM12 or a community release like mentioned above.

      • -3

Oh that's just ridiculous. I'm running 5.1 on my Nexus 10 with half the specs, and it's running just fine.

        • +3

          Half?

          Nexus 7 (2012):
          CPU ARM Cortex-A9 Nvidia Tegra 3 T30L 1.2 GHz quad-core (1.3 GHz single-core mode) 1MB L2 cache
          Memory 1 GB RAM DDR3

          Nexus 10:
          CPU 1.7 GHz Dual-core Cortex-A15
          Memory 2 GB 12.8 GB/s LPDDR3 RAM

I think you mean double (overlooking the quad vs dual-core because architecture and generational improvements).

Anyway, I was speaking from experience, my Android 5.x experience on the Nexus 7 (2012) did not go well (but perhaps it's faulty?).

        • -3

@Lukian: For arguments sake, I'll agree with your first point. Though I will say that there was a much bigger upgrade between dual/quad core in terms of performance than you're letting on.

        • @jackary:

I have a Nexus 10, the reason it runs smooth is primarily down to the RAM, there is twice as much and runs a lot faster. The CPU on the Nexus 10 is also faster than the Nexus 7 (2012).

        • @jackary: A forum thread on AndroidCentral about why nexus 10 dual core is better than the quad core Nexus 7 2012.

        • Glad I bought a refurb Nexus 7 2013, comes with 2Gb RAM.
Now where is the deal on more refurb Nexus 7 2013, expansys?

        • @edfoo: Look guys, settle down. No need for the negs, it was based on genuine experience with both the N7 2012 (a birthday gift to my mum last year) and my own N10. Perhaps I should have called the performance of the two "comparable". Obviously we can all find a forum to discredit what the other is saying, my point is I just don't think this would be a slow device in any respect for the vast majority, the price makes it an even better buy. Therefore deal.

Edit: Apologies edfoo, just realised I've replied to the wrong comment. Unsure how to change..

        • @jackary: I think people negged you because you made a point about something and went with it without making a reasonable comment other than comment misconception about CPUs (Core number = performance).

It wasn't me who've negged you though.

        • @AznMitch: Oh for gods sake, that's a pretty long bow to draw don't you think?

Multi threaded performance is better on the Nexus 7 because of the 2 additional cores. Single core performance is better on the Nexus 10 because of the newer architecture and slightly faster clock speed. Your own link a few posts above confirms this. There, clarified. No misconception to be had, I think some have just read my comment and ran away with it.

Please continue to argue amongst yourselves.

        • @jackary: I wasn't trying to argue with you?

        • @AznMitch: Sorry, but I'm not even going to dignify a forum post from Android Central, from 2012, written in garbage English. Try again.

        • @AznMitch: Haha, okay.

        • @jackary: Look at your first comment, you used word like "half". It's not unfair for people to assume that you simply deduced performance is half because the core number is half. If you said something like real life experience is worse because of high resolution blah blah or multithread performance is better on N7 2012 because of the number of cores, I don't think you would've gotten negged. Single core performance is better on nexus 10 and it has double the RAM, you cannot go "it performs half as much as Nexus 7 2012" without going into details. Though that being said, I don't think people should've negged you on that. Something like this would've cleared everything out.

        • Thanks for your input.

The stuff you mention happens on ALL N7 2012, new or refurb. Either stay with Android 4.x or flash a custom ROM like CM11/12.

      • Thanks All. I will flash CM11/12

        • I had heaps of problems with both CM11 & CM12. I've just flashed CM10.2 and it's back to being as fast as when I got it.

          Major failing of the N7-2012's.

        • @downforce: Thanks, I will try installing CM10.2.

      • Franco kernel r82 allegedly fixes lag on N7 2012 for 5.1 roms only. I haven't tried it as I have a 3G (tilapia) and 5.1 isn't released yet.

Except the camera, Nexus 4 is still an awesome phone. The price of Nexus 7 is fair but it's 1G ram only.

    • +1

And the battery life… Ruddy awful!

  • Don't buy the N4's….

i bought two N4's and a N7. I have flashed them all to CM12, and lceared the cache on the N& (it speeds it up immensely!)

But the N4's are both rubbish. they had shocking battery life, one of them no longer works at all. I would skip the N4 deal as a minimum and wouldn't risk the N7 again either. I also replaced the battery in one and it didn't help.

I bought a new N4 a while ago and it is outperforming both of the refurbished ones.

Warranty period expired, incase anyone wants to suggest it.

I bought a refurbished N4 several months ago. Running lollipop, no problems with it. Battery life could be better, but I don't think anything for this price compares.

      • +2

Also bought a couple (cheaper than this deal!) - wife's is going pretty well (both seem to have problems connecting to free WiFi though), mine has some problems (randomly turns off every few days, for some reason has decided not to let me power off while on lock screen.) Battery life I'd describe as average.
But worst problem is I cracked the screen the other day…

        • yep - random powers off, then need to plug in to turn back on… lots of red light action.

Cannot get it back on now.

        • @palitu: It's been fine every time (turning back on) except once or maybe twice, with red light - had to try turning on/plugging in about 10 times.
Haven't Googled this til now but people have had this since the N4 was new…

The Nexus 7 2012 32GB version has been listed for $127.99

    • Thanks. OP updated.

  • Worst customer experience I've ever had. Had to return a faulty android media player to Hong Kong via fed ex. Customer service have no idea what the process is. It's taken 3 weeks so far and still not picked up

  • speaking of Nexus 7, the lag was bad and I handed the device to relative after I had enough of it not being able to charge and turn on once batter ran out by standby.

I am still using my Nexus 4 as YouTube player after two years and a few months. Its battery barely last a day now. However after I flash Android 5.02 in it, the device works just as new with out root.

The battery can be replaced so, if that was achieved, it can still last a while.

  • I have two Nexus 7 devices in my house - one that I purchased for myself back in 2012 and one that my housemate purchased a month or two later. My Nexus is now barely functional. It lags like hell and it's only really good for watching movies on whilst travelling (provided you have the time an patience to get the movie to actually load). My housemates Nexus however, is trucking along rather fine, considering its age. A few lags here and there, but otherwise functional. It all has to do with the quality of the RAM used in each particular model - early versions it would seem had particularly bad RAM, whereas later versions seem to be a bit better.

I'd be tempted to spend $80 to replace my non-functional Nexus, but if it's the same as what I've got, it would be pretty useless. Wonder if we'll see and Nexus 2013's on sale any time soon? If I could snatch up one of those for $100, I'd be pretty happy!

Bought an N4 refurbished from them before. It had touchscreen issue and freezes intermittently. They refused refund initially. However, I bought via PayPal and they did provide the refund at the end.

Test the phone or tablet as soon as you receive it. Use a touchscreen testing app and test the entire screen. If something isn't working properly, don't assume it is a software issue.

The quality control on these refurbished ones are not good.

    • PayPal is evil, but sometimes comes in handy.

  • Cashrewards. has Standard Cashback on Devices 2.66%.

Wow I must be the only one that had a perfect experience with my N4 purchase.
The phone is fast and battery life really good, with the lollipop update.
Delivery took 3 days and when it arrived it was like brand new…

    I was considering purchasing another…

    • I also got a refurbished N4 during the last deal and it runs perfectly. I couldn't be happier. But be aware that during the last deal they were offering "official refurbished" N4s and just plain "refurbished" N4s for a bit less. Mine was an official refurbished and was new in box.

  • Darn, all the N4s are sold out already… I've been wanting this for ages!

  • Well I jumped at this deal for the N7, received quickly, happy with performace using 5.1, and now….recharging…about 8 hours to recharge with tablet turned off, using supplied cable and adapter into wall socket. Looks like its a common issue but the fixes not so much.

Have tried different charging cables / adapters but no luck. The cable and adapter that are supplied look generic, they are not branded at all. Would this really make a difference, viz
"Depending on the charger, the Nexus might not recognize it as a 2A charger. It does not actually measure its capacity, but relies on some properties of the otherwise unused data-lines of the USB connection to the charger. Shouldn't be the problem if you used the charger that came with the Nexus."

Maybe should just return under warranty while i can, as others have done. Any help appreciated.
