Wow… YumCha-branded TV. 80cm, 1920 x 1080. Only 2 HDMI. Probably very average quality images. But look at that price. Definitely great value for money.

Please note the current 'Rank Arena' has no relationship with the organsation which manufactured Rank Arena TV's in the 60s/70s/80s. Target bought the name rights from Rank Arena in the US (which is owned by Big W).

This TV was previously sold by Target for $699. There was a good review among comments from that offering.

    • saw that, but wasn't sure if it was the same tv, as the described contrast ratio was different (2000 : 1 as opposed to 1300 : 1) ….so didn't link to it….just in case :o)

papafox - who is owned by bigW?

Target is owned by Westfarmers who took over Coles and you said RA is owned by Target - did you forget something in your text? or did BigW take over the US during the GFC?

      • No, I just said that Target bought the rights to use the Rank Arena name (indirectly) from Big W. That doesn't imply ownership of Target by Big W.

  • Big W will be selling an AWA 32" for $499 with a 3 year warranty starting the 27th of this month, but I believe it's only 720p.

  • why don't they call it 32" like normal people?

<pedant>Cos Australia switched to metric 34 years ago?</pedant>

      • We understand that, but the imperial system is the standard for measuring certain products or hardware, so why confuse us when the majority in Australia compare by using the imperial system?

        • Meh, it's not that confusing…

          • @ShortyX: 80 divide by 2.5.

            2 milliseconds on a calculator (if you're lazy). :)

        • Yeh I'd agree. I recently listed an LCD on eBay and the dimensions had to be in centimetres…weird

  • and yet we still measure TVs and wheels and LCDs in inches…

Go to a rural farmers market in France. They sell potatoes, carrots etc in pounds, even though France adopted the metric system 200 years ago.

Sometimes the use of imperial measurements is habit and tradition. In the case of car wheels, I suspect its because cars are associated with the US, which still uses imperial measurements. With LCD's/TV's, its probably because it suits the marketing people.

  • awesome tv for price am posting this through mine have my pc and xbox 360 running through mine not a problem at all got mine when were $699 b4 and got $100 off as last 1 ex-display model. that price can't go wrong!

  • is this the cheapest 32" 1,080p LCD out there?

    • you can go into any large retailer and haggle a housebrand or unknown branded 32" down to low $500s no worries. It's stocktake atm, every retailer's looking to clear discontinued or replaced stock. Dick Smith Lidcombe were selling Sanyo 42" FULL HD LCDs for $799. none left though :(

    • Occasionally you'll see the Conia 80cm Full HD LCD TV @ $499.

  • I bought a 46 inch full HD 100 hz 3 year warrenty aldi tv for 900$

  • Awesome price. I'm assuming 12 month warranty only?

I'm sure most people know, but a 1080p TV isn't always better than a 720p TV. A brand name 720p for a similar price to a non-brand 1080p may walk all over it - Best to check it out in store before purchase. Nevertheless, this is a decent buy on paper.

    • yeah checked it out for last few months and how is a lower resolution a better bet? lol

      • I'd personally take a Samsung or Sony 720p model over this TV any day of the week. Correct, the resolution specification would not be superior however the picture quality, brightness, colour, features, 100hz feature etc. would probably be much better.

Basically I just wanted to say that screen resolution is not the only thing one must look at when purchasing a TV.

      • Realistically, you don't start noticing the difference between 720p and 1080p until you're in the 42"+ screensizes (at a regular 3m viewing distance). The smaller TV you get, the closer you have to be until you can spot the difference.

  • Contrast ratio 1300:1. Probably the quality of picture you'll get won't be worth the money paid.

  • rank arena…does anyone else find that name ridiculous ?

    • It does stink a bit.

    • Always sounded kinda silly, bit like Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

Was curious how the name originated but Wikipedia redirects to the Rank Organisation and makes no mention of "Arena". Rare Wikipedia fail. Other sources indicate the name came about after Rank acquired a (Danish?) radio manufacturer named Arena - same way PWC got its ridiculous name :)

i have this tv not too sure if stats have changed from last release but everything is spot on on mine no flaws found crisp as no slowdowns no resolution restrictions etc, just shitty sound but fine when run console and dvds and pc audio output through stereo or amp. so if it had a sony or samsung label slapped on it it would be a better tv? you do notice the differnce between 720 and 1080 on any size lcd especially with gaming and running a pc through it at the higher resolution. nuff said

I'm assuming you meant to reply to Marty a bit up there ^

It's great that you've got this TV and you're happy with it. Unfortunately, you can't really argue with the studies that have concluded what I've already stated above just because you like yours. If you like it, great.

For everyone else, they should be aware of technical specifications and the biological limitations of the human eye — and how they fit in with one and other.

  • Would this TV support Nvida's 3D vision?
