For anyone completely mystified what this was and expected some sort of 'sleeping bag' in the conventional sense… after trawling through and mistaknig it for some sleeveless vest jacket, it is acutally some sort of baby contraption. i.e. a sleeping bag for the bub.

lol - looks like no deal for me :(

    Quote from product detials:

"They'll always sleep well in our Newbies Sleeping Bag. Quilted for extra warmth, it features a two-way front facing zip for quick late night nappy changes and is designed to keep your little one comfy and covered as they drift off into sleepyland. Other must-have features include: open arms to regulate bub's body temperature, and a cocooned bottom for a snuggly fit.
    "

    • No sure why you copped so many negs for asking a perfectly reasonable question, there seem to be a number of us who have no idea what it is. No doubt the militaristic pro-baby types who remain mystified the choice of some adults to not have children.

      • +1

No idea why either mate. Perhaps all the pro-baby parents out en-force? I genuinely was tongue in cheek amused at mistaking it for firstly a) a sleeping back, then some sort of down feather like vest.. I am sure I was not the only one who had no idea it was for stashing babies - hence my copy paste from the website to save some the few minutes of browsing to find out what it is.

Oh well, guess there are always sensitive types out there.

maybe they thought the 'no deal for me' was a down vote to the deal, as opposed to saying it was a no go deal for me as it wasn't the product I thought it was? Still, guess with the influx of new ozb's these days the use of +'s and negs are a lot more free flow for little things than they used to be??

Looks to be a copy of the Grobag http://au.gro-store.com/grobag-size-guide

Yep, this is a very popular (and effective) item amongst new parents and babies. Great for that extra layer of warmth.

      • +6

Agreed. These things are great, especially for bubs who persistently kick off their blankets.

        • +10

          …which is all of them

        • @Jackson: Yup, most of them anyway…some are better at it than others too.

        • SIDS guidelines do not recommend blankets for newborns anyway.

        • @mazorn: Commonsense recommends protecting them from hypothermia in winter is a bit more of a priority…

          @StewBalls:
Exactly, that's what these are for…

    What tog is it?

    • +2

I got one already feels like 2.5 tog

    • +1

Thats the issue with Bonds sleeping bags - I don't think they state a TOG rating on them

      • Im bout to be a first time dad next year and wtf is a TOG.

Sounds like POG, which I used to collect in school.

You're like me 8 months ago. We've stuck to the gro-bags and other brands that give you a proper TOG rating. It's probably the missus just being over cautious but she wanted to be well informed about which sleeping bag to use in certain temperatures.

One of the controversies surrounding babies (of which there are hundreds) is the best technique to get them to sleep. Some experts in the field (like tizzy hall) advocate wrapping the baby up and keeping them very very warm - which is in direct contrast to what the government websites state. Apparently a hot baby is at an increased risk of SIDS, however very very warm baby's sometime will sleep better (we found out on one occasion - however my wife put a stop to it after reading the government information).

The problem is that there are zealots in both camps who will make you feel bad for choosing whichever technique you use. Some mums (friends, mothers group, bloggers etc) will be in the camp that a crying baby needs comforting. Others believe that babies need to self settle/soothe and crying is part of the process. My advice to you is to do whatever you and your partner are comfortable with and try not to get involved in the world of name calling and bullying, which is what I've seen when mums (and dads - but mostly mums) are discussing different sleep techniques.

Long post - in the end, there are manufacturers guidelines of which TOG rating to use in certain temperatures. Bonds don't give TOG ratings, so you can't be sure what it's rated. Are you meant to use it in the depths of winter or the middle of summer. It's common sense to me - but some people find it easier to stick to the TOG ratings. Low TOG for summer. Higher TOG for winter. Just remember, some books (especially sleep books) go against the manufacturer and government guidelines and tell you to wrap the baby in a bamboo wrap and high TOG rated sleeping bag to encourage a deep sleep. I reckon if it works for you then it's okay - others will disagree. We ended up sticking to the manufacturer and government guidelines.

          Hope this is helpful.

Not sure why but I read BEWBIES SLEEPING BAG and thought there was still so much I didn't know about lady lumps.

    • probably plenty you don't know about lady bumps, unless you are a lady

  • Thanks OP - got a niece or nephew due in early Jan, so have ordered one of these.

  • Great deal, thanks OP.

I argued with the wife about why we would need this or grow bags etc when our bub was first born..
Turns out the practical use other then keeping them warm is that when they start to move around and wriggle in the bed they climb out of their sheets and wake up cold… with these bags they can still get out of the sheets but they remain warm.
really handy and Kmart/big w Best and less have them for about $12-25 depending on brand and size.

    000 and 00 only.

  • No tog rating means it's only suitable if you have good judgement of the right temperature for your baby. We ended up buying grobags instead as they suggest the temperature and number of layers to be worn for each tog rating

  • thinking to buy for my baby niece who is 9 months old. is this suitable?

    • Unless she's a very tiny 9 month old (i.e. very prem), the sizes available will be too small for her. Only size 000 (usually about 0-3 months old) and 00 (usually about 3-6 months).
You could ask her mother though-she'd know what size she is in now. Just don't bother asking Dad 😂

    • i doubt it avexdevil.

The sizes are for up to 6 months old. Even if the baby was smaller than the average, she would outgrow the sleeping bag in no time at all.
