10% off Book Depository (UK and US) until 31st Aug 2010 - Some Weird Terms

820

10% off Book Depository for its 6th birthday. It is, however, a bit odd. The easiest way to get the 10% coupon is to get a friend or 'friend' to enter your email address so Bookdep can email it to you. I'm not really sure what someone who has 10 friends who end up making a purchase will do with 10x10% coupons, but okay, I guess? (Multiple purchases, perhaps.)

After you get the coupon, it's the usual Bookdep offer stuff. (Click here, coupon there.) I've included instructions below for anyone who might be unsure about how it works. :)

  1. Get 'friend' to email deal to you. (Refer to comments..)
  2. Receive email and click on the big red sticker saying 'Click here to redeem your voucher'.
  3. You're brought to a personalised splash page. Click on 'Start shopping now' and well, start shopping. (You must get to this page/click on the link for the coupon field to be activated at checkout, if this is anything like previous Bookdep offers.)
  4. When I clicked on 'Go to basket/Checkout', the code from the splash page was pre-entered for me in the coupon field. "You have to come via this link to use the coupon code. Then just enter the code YB4PCS in the basket when you begin to checkout." It was YB4PCS for me, not sure whether it'd be different for others. If it's not there, enter it. Then just click on "Apply coupon".
  5. Your shopping basket will be updated with a discount titled 'Spread The Love 10% discount coupon:'.

The deal lasts for 2 whole months, until 31st Aug, though, which is nice.

US link: http://www.bookdepository.com/love
UK link: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/love (only domain difference, but .com often had lower prices, last I checked.)

You can use http://booko.com.au if you aren't already doing so to source the best prices for the books you're after. ^^

Copy pasta T&C:

  1. Once a referred friend has bought from us we will send you a 10% voucher that can be used against your next purchase on bookdepository.co.uk or bookdepository.com simply follow the instructions on the email and visit the page we send you a link to, if you don't go via the route we suggest you will not see a redemption box in the checkout.
  2. Only one voucher may be redeemed per purchase, per person.
  3. Offer expires August 31st 2010.
  4. Vouchers are non transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash.
  5. Customers can refer as many friends as they like during the period, we will however monitor for unusually high use.
  6. Vouchers cannot be retrospectively applied.
  7. The Book Depository Limited retains the right to end this promotion without notice.
  8. Emails will not be retained other than for the processing of the offer.</blockquote>

  • what do you mean 10x10% coupons? I don't think they accumulate.

in a nutshell just enter your email address and make it from any secondary email, then you can use the 10% voucher, at which point the secondary email get also get the 10%.. but there's no point in waiting for the 10% voucher for secondary email as each email you input into the 10 boxes automatically get 10% vouchers.

    • That's what I meant by 'friend', but it's not what the deal was originally meant for so I didn't mention specifics.

10x10% coupons because you get 1 coupon for every friend that purchases (theoretically, if you entered emails of actual friends.) — that you can use on 10 separate occasions because it's one coupon per transaction.

      • oh yeah i was told that a while back, forgot all about it, would be useful Davo thanks :D

        Don't forget Mailinator ;)

      • Wow I never new the dots in gmail ment nothing.

      • +4

GREAT tip. 5 stars for you, take the rest of the week off.

      • WOW never knew that thanks!

better tip [email protected] is the same as [email protected]
so you can add a [email protected] to all the dodgy sites you sign up for
that way, you know who is selling your email to spam companies.

  • Yeah it's a different code for each person. Has to be a 'friend' who is a member of book depository. Code is not specific to any email though.

    • Friend doesn't need to be a member, I'm pretty sure. The address I used to send the referrals isn't a member address..

Thanks, bought two books and saved about $40 AUD compared to the cheapest price locally

  • Awesome, been waiting ages for a BD discount but was just about to order some books. Now I do get a BD discount!

Thanks for the heads up =)

  • It appears you only get a 10% voucher if your friends make a purchase…

    • That's the bit I was looking for clarification on.

It's a referral sales bonus. I guess you could refer yourself and make a small purchase, then use the discount on a larger order?

      • no, you don't get the discount from a friend making a purchase, the friend itself gets the discount.

        • that means that if you are using another email to refer yourself, you will need to set up a new account with Book Depository, using the same delivery address ???

          seems like a pain to do… :(

          • +1

@jv: You don't need to set up a Book Depository account to refer yourself, just use another e-mail address you know of. I used my mum's e-mail address to send it to my e-mail address (which has the Book Depository account). Maybe you can use 10 Minute Mail?

Great timing, this discount - was going to buy some stuff in August, but now can save a bit more! AND it's for both the US and UK sites!

            • @kerfuffle: Yep. I did the same (used Mailinator for the friend's email, sent it to myself).

Got the link within 10 minutes.

Note i just bought one book off both the .uk and .com sites and had to do this twice.. Still i saved like $6 which is pretty good :)

              • @SimBer: I'm curious, did you have two books with lower prices, one on the UK and the other on the US site? Pretty interesting, that.

But yeah, remarkable savings hooray~ ^^

Great bargain! Then again even 1% off Book Depository is more of a bargain than 30% off the local booksellers

    • Wise saying…

  • its a different code each time

but all u do is type anythign in the "your email space"
    i.e
    [email protected]

and sned it to urself as the friend

thats what i did and got the coupon

  • Does it still work if the friend you refer is already a Book Depository customer? cos I've already told all my friends about BD so they all already use it.

    • yeah, it works fine as far as i can tell :/ i just got the "referrer" email, but thats it.

  • Good deal works no prbolems.

  • +1

noo I just purchased books 2 days ago :(. time for some more though

  • yeah it works
    i referred myself
    using a dummy email
    lol
its suppose to be ur friend gets 10% and u get10% when he uses it

but the referred friend can be an existing member

  • At a guess, I think this is to stop affiliates from rorting the system by removing the possibility of customers using an affiliate link AND the discount code. Don't blame them - that would seriously cut into the bottom line, considering their already low, low margins.

  • If only this deal came out sooner, would have saved.

I totally love this site! Have bought so many stuff from them before. Great prices and world wide free delivery on top! Can't beat that!

  • This deal discriminates those people without friends…

    • +3

lol, i emailed it to myself. So i was able to do it with no friends :(

      • +7

We know Mods don't have friends, that's why they are Mods… ;)

        • Hey for that I'll give you 10% off your next penalty box time!!

  • Great deal, cant wait to get some cheap calculus or chess strategy books.

  • Thanks!!

    Good post Jenn!

  • if you go to the .com site, the price is listed in AUD. When you check out, is it converted from the base currency or do they bill you the amount it is indicated on the site? ie i think it is pounds to start off with and when you check out, there is a bank conversion fee on top of the listing price

    • I've never actually made an order in AUD before (had USD to spare in Paypal), but I would guess that there's no conversion, since there doesn't seem to be a conversion in Paypal when I just tried checking out..

Perhaps it's similar to using Paypal in, say, USD — Paypal exchanges the money and charges the AUD amount to your bank/cc (no extra charges). I used just my CC once or twice but decided I preferred Paypal's ripoff exchange rate to my bank's ripoff exchange rate AND an international fee. -wry-

    • They will charge you in AUD. I know this mainly because they accept Amex for every currency except AUD, which is caused by the fact that Amex Australia is retarded.

  • Anyone else having problems sending themselves a voucher code? I don't seem to be able to do it :(

    • I managed to send one with an alternate email account. If you’d like, I can try for you if you wanna message me your email..otherwise there's always mailinator or the gmail trick (not sure whether latter works, though) — I've managed to send to two other friends too..

  • If you get a friend/relative who lives in the UK to buy the books for you (delivered to your address), you will also save quite a bit more money. Compare the prices using a UK proxy, and you will see 10-20% difference in price.

    • Serious? I thought it was the other way around, 'coz locals have to pay VAT whereas foreigners don't? Hmm… will have to look into this…

  • Oops, there are some problems with the form…Please correct the error(s) indicated below before submiting the form again.
    Invalid email address
    You can't refer yourself.

    I'm confused…

    • Maybe you were logged in when you tried to send a referral to your e-mail address? Try logging out.

  • Goddamn. A $30 book at A&R online with 10% off and free shipping makes it $26.xx. From bookdepository.com with 10% off and free shipping, $15.xx. Got to be happy with that. 50% saving on the AUS RRP. Now THIS is a bargain.

  • Used this last night to get 10% off my bookdepository.com order.

    • +1

      And no positive? :P

Weirdly-enough, I've had trouble actually getting a voucher from bookdep.com. Maybe because I somehow had one from the UK branch. o.O (I thought I was sending via the US branch, though..) I'm glad it's still working for others.

I managed to make a large order with a friend in the end, anyway, so it worked out. Books are already starting to arrive, and it's been only a week or so since the order was made. :)
