Its really not funny but it is serious.
As my user name says i prepp. They could really come in handy in an emergency.

I think you need a better one for that.

This will be great for when I open my wallet

  • Cheap coffee filters…

Note NOT suitable for Asbestos or sanding lead paint.

If it's the type in the photo, don't bother. The single bit of elastic means that they seldom properly fit your face. If they have two bits of elastic then they're more likely to fit better. If there's not a good seal then all that happens is the air you breathe in gets sucked through the gaps and isn't filtered at all.

If you're serious about protecting your lungs, spend $40 or so to get a reasonable half-face respirator with replaceable filters. They tend to be rubber and have decent elastic straps that allow you to get a good face fit.

You only need a full face mask if you're doing something scary, fancy being an extra in the next "Contagion" type movie or want to do Darth Vader impressions.

edit: wow, downvotes already, was it my crappy joke at the end or dislike of facts based on experience?

you'd think, as a banana, people would take your expertise in protective gear more seriously.
      … don't peel bad.

        Terrible joke…

Take your up vote and go. Don't darken our doorstep again with such terrible puns.

Dw about the downvotes. In my experience unless u get a neg u haven't yet said something worthwhile. :)

    • Any recommendations in particular ?
On the cheapish side by still full face decent one ?

Well it depends on what you are doing, but the Protector brand ones from bunnings are quite ok. Soft rubber, thick elastic with positioner and most importantly, interchangeable cartridges. The cartridges are reasonable value too. Around $5 for dust and particulates( Ok for asbestos) and the same for the mists and vapors one (spray painting etc)
Main thing: you need the Australian standards stamp and suitability information on them
        Edit:
        Here,this type https://www.bunnings.com.au/protector-half-face-single-filte…
They do twin cartridge version too

Green and yellow Protector half-face from Bunnings has done me pretty well. You won't know till you try it on if it seals well, but luckily Bunnings are great with returns.

Not used a full-face, so I can't advise on one of those (though misting is likely to be an issue going by my experience of full-face shields (not respirators)). For half face, I went for one pretty much identical to this - https://www.bunnings.com.au/protector-small-medium-half-face… (my one is blue and branded Unisafe). I went with a twin filter one as it lowers the breathing resistance and I'm a heavy breather when exerting myself (as anyone who's received an anonymous phone call from me will know).

I've had mine long enough (probably 8 years) that the elastic in the straps perished. I just replaced them with non-stretchy nylon straps as they don't really need to stretch when fitted properly (for me at least). As well as replacing the filters when needed, I dismantle it every so often and clean it with soap and water. I can see it lasting me another 8 years easily.

Don't buy it. The quality is bad. The rubber string easily disconnects from the mask when you wear it.

Big win for every Asian student of Melbourne.

Used one of these to sand a table. Ended up in hospital (asthma).
I'd highly recommend the half face respirator instead

    • +2

Yes mate these border on being dangerous.
They deceive people into thinking that are protected and going ahead with dangerous or dubious saftey jobs, when they actually offer sweet F all protection.

    • How about those use by hospital?

      • +2

I think these will do a better job of keeping your saliva / mucus in when you cough / sneeze but as for keeping pathogens and microbes out, won't be of much use.

  • Bought 3m half face respirator from masters sale for $5
Does anyone know who sells the cartridge filters and how much 4

  • I just think they look cool…

    • Because you are a cyber goth?

      • +2

Only if he also buys a can of silver spray paint from the next aisle.

        • Witness me!

  • +2

While the quality isn't good for more than one use.
They would make ok camping coffee filters :)
I use them to filter the debris in two stroke petrol.

    • Yep, these are pretty much useless for respiratory protection. Useful for other purposes.

  • I have a resperator with replaceable filters, I still like these to protect against non-serious dust I kick up.

For example filtering soil can kick up a lot of dust, these reduce the amout you breathe in greatly but don't stop it completely, but the little amounts I breathe in don't cause any noticeable harm.
