Seems like a great deal. I'm jealous of the NBN havers.

Why is static IP desirable for online gaming?

    • +2

Mostly if you're hosting servers. Also good if you have smart DNS for netflix/hulu, so you don't have to update your IP constantly.

      • Not that hard to update your IP address automatically using something like No-IP as most of the smart DNS services support DDNS. I much prefer not to have a static address, but that's just me.

      • +5

        Not just hosting servers.

I've been following the Whirlpool thread and if you aren't on the gamer plan w/ static IP you get put behind CGNAT (carrier grade NAT).

Essentially this means other people can't connect to you which is problematic for those hosting servers of any kind but for gamers it breaks a lot of online games that rely on P2P (peer to peer) based networking.

        • so if i get the normal NBN i cant matchmake on games that dont have a server browser like Overwatch?

        • +2

@jabroni: no you can, you just cant host any servers from your computer.

        • @xEnt: ok thats cool then

but for some reason no other site but them are showing me as nbn ready which makes me hesitant to sign up as nbnco and iinet are saying still in contruction phase

        • I was going to shout bollocks but after rereading your post and realising that it's regarding the ISP in question yeah sure good thing to point out. NATed would be a major pitfall for a lot of people.

    • -1

      It isnt.

  • Can anyone comment on whether their service is any good i.e. reliable speeds?

    • +1

Well they screwed up my order twice, activated it at the wrong address…

Third time lucky hopefully. Will report back.

I'm giving them some slack as they have been swamped.

    • +7

Just got connected today after a bit of a wait: http://www.speedtest.net/result/5853863584.png

      • -1

        Lucky :(

They are using Optus in Darwin, so that is where the delay is.

        • +1

That isnt how nbn works. Everyone must buy backhaul directly from nbnco

        • @Vhaluus: so what's prevent the RSPs to rent their contract to another retailer? Think of it like subletting room when you are renting a unit.

      • Not bad at all.

        • +2

Your ping is crap for fibre though?
Surely a "gaming" plan should be giving single digit pings.

I'm on a 100/40 TPG plan and I get about 2 to 3ms pings from Speedtest in Perth.

@apptrack: When you say they are using Optus in Darwin… do you mean traffic is getting routed there one way or another?
That would sort of explain the overhead.

        • @Deviner: No they use Optus infrastructure and back haul. They even create the accounts…

        • @apptrack: Ok but the user is in Melbourne - what's the Darwin reference?

        • +2

@Deviner: That test say's they're 450 miles away from the server and their profile says they're in Tasmania. What makes you think they're in Melbourne?

        • @Deviner: shap08 is in Tasmania, connecting to speedtest in Melbourne - the link says ~450mi.

If you did a speed test from Perth to Melbourne, you might find you'd get the same latency.

        • @rompastompa: If I do a speedtest in my job, in Perth, Speedtest reckons I'm in Sydney based on our provider - so that doesn't really prove anything.

But if you're going to post up a test of your speed up here… why not point it to your area rather than leave it pointing at Melbourne when living in Tasmania?
Bizarre way of doing a benchmark and paints that fibre plan in a bad light unnecessarily.

        • @Deviner: depends on how they peer it, take AARNET for example in Tas. Anything from my home to work goes via Victoria even though work is ~10km away. It doesn't always make sense but that's the way it is.

As for geolocation and your work, be careful what you browse at work :)

      • Holy Crap Batman! Looking forward to getting connected!

      • What type of connection is it? FTTP, FTTN, or HFC?

      • +2

Sorry but that ping is terrible for a "gaming" plan. Go on the whirlpool forums, everyone hates this company's service so far.

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2587458&…

Will not be switching over to them.

    • +2

Looks like they're having some issues at the moment, but that's pretty standard for a brand new service that is offering extremely good prices. Apparently they took over 1500 orders on the first day after launch.

Once the hype dies down, I'm sure they'll be like any other budget price ISP.

Only available to those who preordered it before 15/11. Below "Order Now" it clearly states:

Offer valid for customers who pre-ordered by the 15th November, 2016 and place a confirmed order by 15th December, 2016.

    • I submitted an order just then while on the phone to them and all good :).

In worst case you just won't get the PS4 coupon.

      • I tried to call through and get the pax deal to be told it has finished and there was no way to apply discount now. Hoping it will still work through this link. Won't know until they fix up their availability test. I am serviceable but the system keeps saying I'm not. They've told me to allow them 2 weeks to fix that issue. Not too promising.

        • Correct they cant do it over the phone, only web link.

        • @apptrack: Thanks. Hopefully they can fix the availability test soon so I can swap over to them.

        • They told me 2 weeks 1-2 weeks ago…

        • @Zeral: just called through again to see what's happening. Asked to talk to manager. They've been told by the engineers the it should have taken 2 weeks to fix. It is still a known issue and they are still working on it. If your details have been left with them they will email you once the system is working properly again.

Mr Demos, formerly of Telstra's budget service Belong, said they would not disconnect someone's internet service without their consent.

"Customers can turn off their current provider by themselves and that's not being turned off by us, that's been turned off by themselves, and we don't advise them to do that but if that's what they do, that's what they do," he said.

The evidence on Whirlpool suggests that they actually botched the migration of a number of customers.

On FTTP NBN it's possible to have up to 4 active services at once, on ports numbered UNI-D1 to UNI-D4. Usually people just have UNI-D1 active.

When migrating to a new service, the sensible thing to do is to activate a new service on UNI-D2, then tell your old ISP to terminate the service on UNI-D1. That way you are never without service.

Reports are that upon applying for MyRepublic users were disconnected from their active service on UNI-D1, even though they had requested that services be activated on UNI-D2. i.e. MyRepublic had disconnected their UNI-D1 service through a "churn" request, contrary to what the users wanted.

There are also reports that a number of shill accounts have been created by MyRepublic staff to give MyRepublic 5 star reviews on Facebook.

Given the comments quoted above which I believe to be false, I wouldn't put the latter past them.

I'd give this mob a wide berth for now.

I think they have overpromised and AFAICT their game is simply to show massive growth because they are reliant on external funding to continue operating.

      https://www.techinasia.com/myrepublics-financials-revealed-p…

That said, from a practical standpoint if OzBargainers were to sign up on contract and the service really doesn't deliver (e.g. you consistently get 10Mbps of the maximum 100Mbps during peak times) I'd say you have solid grounds for terminating the contract early.

In the worst case you'd open a dispute with the TIO, and according to the TCP MyRepublic should not be able to send debt collectors after you whilst a dispute is open. And I can't fathom the TIO ruling against you if performance is that bad.

But all of this is Effort, hence my recommendation to give these guys a miss until they prove themselves to be able to provide solid speeds at scale (i.e. once they've got say 50,000 customers).

      • There are also reports that a number of shill accounts have been created by MyRepublic staff to give MyRepublic 5 star reviews on Facebook.

Sorry are you not aware that this is a normal thing now? Most businesses do this. Telstra has been doing it for almost 2 decades before social media was even a thing. You should assume everything you read that isn't publishhed by someone you know is made up because half of it is.

Their T&C's specifically state they don't guarantee any particular speed though so you might be out of luck if you get shit speed.

On another note, I put in my address (I already have 100/40 NBN) and they're telling me they'll hook me up with ADSL 'until NBN becomes available in the area'.
        Bit of a let down!

I may leave this one though, even though I'd love a PS4 Pro coupon and even if it's about $30 per month cheaper than what I'm currently paying.

        • Their T&C's specifically state they don't guarantee any particular speed though so you might be out of luck if you get shit speed.

Pretty sure literally everyone says that.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: Yeah, I'd agree with that sentiment.
But unless you were getting absolutely shocking speeds like sub 10mbps on a 100mbit plan, I doubt you could do much.

If you're getting 50 or 60 and expected to get 100, I doubt the TIO would be siding with you.

        • Their T&C's specifically state they don't guarantee any particular speed though so you might be out of luck if you get shit speed.

One of the great things about Australian Consumer Law is that the T&C's don't mean much if they are "unfair"; see https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/contracts-agreements/unfai…

          Also see https://www.tio.com.au/publications/news/case-study-variable…

But the problem with legal mumbo jumbo is resolution takes time and effort.

I may leave this one though, even though I'd love a PS4 Pro coupon and even if it's about $30 per month cheaper than what I'm currently paying.

          That's the crux of it.

If everything works as advertised you save $30/mo.

If it doesn't you'll burn tens of hours dealing with MyRepublic and the TIO to get out of the contract, or live with hating yourself every time your Internet doesn't do what you want it to.

If the reader has lots of time on their hands then this is a null risk, go for it.

Otherwise I'd say wait 12 months and see how they're going as a steady state operation.

If they really are as operationally amazing as they claim they should still be able to undercut the other providers.

        • @goosmurf: That's exactly my situation.
Everything I've got right now works great - I get excellent pings and almost always over 90/30 (on a 100/40 plan) for $89.99…. I'd normally jump on any kind of savings but I can't deal with the hassle if it goes badly.

The other thing about MyRepublic is, with this $200 off a PS4 Pro… they're forcing you to pay $99 for their (no doubt, crappy) modem.
Dodo tried to do that with me when I was shopping around and it was enough for me to say no to them and go somewhere else because I already had a $200+ Asus router that could do the job.

        • @Deviner: Who are you with currently if you don't mind my asking? Is that unlimited?

Was looking at One- damn, I always think it's a boy band! - MyRepublic for when I move in January, but I'm not entirely confident - mainly due to their dependence on Optus, who are an utter horror show from my experience. :\

        • +1

          @Deviner:

They flat out said to me after I ordered that I would receive the 100/40 plan and that I would receive a service speed no less than 50/10. That was after me telling them I am FTTN, something which I have had to correct them about 5 or so times . Hopefully they have recorded the conversation as I will be disconnecting from MR.

My speeds are 17mbps~D / 2mbps~U, ping is 31. This is based off of a Telstra hosted server in Sydney, I am in Newcastle. My ping was <10 and speeds were almost double.

Not mention I never received my PS4 coupon and yeah I did preorder the plan.

          @flumpf: I'm with TPG on the 100/40 unlimited plan. I got it @ $89.99 p/month but I think it's gone up now to $99.99 p/month.
They've been flawless for me so far, but I've fibre to the home.

        • @ownage input: That's crazy that they'd make that claim over the phone where it's recorded, especially if you told them you're FTTN. They're obviously not properly trained yet!
Good thing you remembered it, you should be gold with regards cancelling I reckon.

        • @Deviner: Cheers for the info. :) I'm moving soon to a brand new flat with fibre to the building, but no NBN until 2018. :\

        • @Deviner: Is FTTN the worst possible connection?

        • @lostn: as a Telstra employee, yes. It is capable of speed faster than fixed wireless however wireless seems to be a lot smoother with less issues than FTTN. FTTN is pointless using part copper and part fibre. Can't wait for FTTP…

      • Excellent info. Think I will stick with my trusty Telstra Cable anyways

  • Damn I just signed up for the regular $59.99 plan yesterday! :(

  • I don't think they will honour it. It's supposed to be for pre orders only and they have a list of those who did preorder (I know because I signed up to the standard plan and asked to change to this and they said no, my name wasn't on the preorder list)

But if you do get it and don't want the ps4 pro coupon phase let me know ;)

    • Yeah these guys are shonky they won't approve it

  • Just rang them.. They said the system doesn't allow to provide this plan with $10 discount.

If you didn't pre-order, don't waste your time.

    • +1

You can't do it over the phone… It won't let them, online it does.

      • +1

I just got off the phone - after waiting 60 minutes in queue - to be told that they are not honouring the PAX discount, regardless of people using the URL or calling up to register.
I registered for the gaming plan as soon as they became available in Australia last month, and I'm still waiting for my service to be activated.
Hence why I called them to see if I could take advantage of the $10 per month discount - only to be told "no - we aren't honouring that discount anyway as it was only intended for PAX on-the-day registrations"

I'll never get back that painful 60 minutes of my life.

  • +5

Word of warning, I myself have been one of those that have had their existing service cancelled before MyRepbulic have enabled their service. I am currently without internet at home.

    • +2

I cancelled my existing thinking it would be activated, still hasn't. Same boat :(.

      • +1

Lucky I didn't.. I've passed the 20 days to get connected and am still not

        • Looks like my service is going to be activated tomorrow, they pushed the order through for me

        • @apptrack: dont hold your breath ..

        • It is 20 business days so you should still be in the time frame. I say it because I signed up on the very first possible day 15th Nov and still waiting hence the 20 business days finish next Tuesday on 13th Dec so hopefully will get within timeframe but my feeling is I won't get it within 5-20 days timeframe.

        • @eXtremist: I'm activated :).

        • @apptrack: Where are you located? Congrats btw..

        • @Era: Darwin.

Will do a speed test later.

  • +1

I'm with iinet $99 a month and i'm happy with them (http://www.speedtest.net/result/5854751424.png ) however i'm tempted by this offer, i might give them a call tommrow

  • Expired as only available to pre-registrations.

    • really?

      • Comments above suggest this, so going by that.

  • Signed up 22/11/16. Got the modem a few days later. But service only activated today: total of 14 days. I think they got smashed by all the sign ups. Anyway speed seems alright! https://s15.postimg.org/ms2nivjij/IMG_3485.jpg — beats my ADSL2+ for the same price!

    • Standard or Gamer?

      • I should clarify. That was Standard.

    • Where are you?

      • Wolli Creek, NSW

  • +1

I signed up 3 weeks ago, received the modem a few days later, and now still waiting for NBN installation, live in Melbourne CBD, Sooo Looong, no schedule given :(

    Game pro plan for $69.99

working perfect for me since the 25th when i was connected.

  • Signed up for using the link provided "PAX only"

    see how it goes

  • Just finish talking to myrepublic.

They said they got a lot of phone calls tonight about the 59.99 game plan with with the voucher. Saying that link we went to shouldn't be active. And told me to look on the bottom right corner and it says order by 15th of nov. Even if you sign up, they won't honour it.

He also said if you check the main web site, it's still 69.99 offer end 15th dec.

Also, my area(yagoona) is not on nbn yet, therefore I am only getting a adsl plan, which means I won't get the $200 voucher anyway.

He is helpful and patience, but a little bit confused wIth instructions from management still. He also sounds like he took a few calls from ozbargainers already, hahahaha

    • It wasn't possible to order by 15th of Nov.

All you could do was pre-register your interest. They weren't actually taking signups before that date.

    • They honoured it for me, guess they've realised now.

  • I pre-ordered the Gamer plan on November 15 ($59.99). Signed up on the 23rd.

Got the PS4 Pro voucher code on November 24 (but didn't see it until today as it was in some other gmail folder).

Modem came on December 04 (yeah, last Sunday).

Ordered PS4 Pro today ($359), and if you sign up as a new Sony customer, the normal $14 delivery fee is free.

    Not connected yet. Still waiting.

  • This was never a deal. It's been done to death on Whirlpool and made very clear that if the date conditions weren't met it won't be honoured.

  • +1

Also signed up for the gamer plan and other than the PS4 code no other contact or modem. Planning on giving them a buzz tomorrow to sort it out

    • I emailed them to see what was going on.

  • To be eligible do you only need to have registered your interest with MR before signups launched on Nov 15? Because I did do that.

    • There was a specific "gamer" pre-registration page that I accidentally found by clicking through their website - you needed to register on this page to get the code and discount.

      • When I tried, they both led to the same pre-registration page.

They seem to have accepted my application. No real communication yet.

  • If this deal was active I would get for sure, if there is a way to be eligible, say you attended pax but didn't sign up etc, could you get around it? (silly question I know but wishful thinking I guess)

    • +1

Well I signed up yesterday and it has been processed and about to be activated…

      Might as well try.

      • How in the world did you signup just yesterday, but still get your order processed & activated so fast ahead of everyone that did it nearly a month ago?!

It boggles the mind! Are they plucking ppl from a lottery? So unfair! They should processing orders from top of the list & working down, not randomly…

If you don't mind me asking: whereabouts are you? They maybe doing orders based on location &/or high uptake first.

        • No idea.

For me it went to Optus to activate. FTTP, Darwin.

  • Says my service is activated (as of yesterday, got an email), but it actually isnt. :(
Long hold times and no email replies or live chat reply.

    • +1

What is happening is Optus activate the service, then it goes back to My Republic to finalise. That's what happened to me…

      • Did you get it sorted by calling them or did it sort itself out? I always give up after a half hour hold. The one time I decided to stay on I was on hold for 50 mintues.

        • By calling them, but it's mostly a waiting game.

What happens is the drop shipping company that provides the modem sends MR the serial number.

That serial number is added to your account and then it lets the modem authenticate. After that you can use any modem.

        • @apptrack: Yey got it sorted on the phone, around an hour wait and then another 20 mintues while the rep looked into it. Can really notice the difference in ping and reliability compared to my former isp. Cant say I'm stoked but its $40 cheaper so I'll live with it.

        • @mightyfes: Exactly, I was with Spintel before and that was terrible. Peak times would get 10mbps at most.

        • @apptrack: O no, my former isp was much better. Couldn't complain apart from the cost.
