    one way

    Hmm.. mother-in-law birthday sorted

Flights to Vietnam are already often cheap through AirAsiaX (via KL/SNG) - hopefully we get some good price competition in the future now JetStar are flying the direct route.

JetStar operate domestically within Vietnam, and while they're still very budget I find them much better than the Aussie domestic JetStar.

    • +2

Did you deliberately capitalise the S in Jetstar?

      • +5

I blame autocorrect - it looks reallyStrange!

    • +3

Direct is way better. AirAsia are cheap but a pain to fly with, nearly everything involves having to go city->KL->city.

      • Yup, I absolutely regret purchasing sale tickets to Japan. An 11 hour stopover at Kuala Lumpur. With all the added cost of onboard food, baggage, it didn't end up being much of a deal anyway. Would not recommend AirAsia.

        • Depends on the stopover, 11 hrs is a long time. For Singapore that would be great, for KL it's too far from the city and the attractions are more spread.

Food is $5 and drinks are only $2-3 from memory, so it's quite cheap. Scoot for example is $20/meal and nearly $5 a drink so that adds up very quickly.

I've done tons of flights Qantas etc wouldn't even come near, like KL -> Perth for $63. Add $15 for two meals and drinks, absolute bargain. Taxi at the other end cost more! They're not always good prices though.

      • The stop over does kill some of the fun. Especially because the terminal at KL is boring and air con was not up to scratch. However arriving 1am in Vietnam can't be too exciting either. But leaving 2am is gonna be tough for some.

        • I wonder what routes aren't flown at bad times? Seems too often there are only a bunch of ridiculous options.

    • -1

I beg to differ. Though it is better than another domestic budget airline in Vietnam. It is still budget and therefore the standard of passengers are rather low.

I don't want to seem a snob but they are sometimes really low.

      • -1

No worse than the standard Jetstar passenger in Australia, in my experience.

        • +3

Who cares about the quality of the passengers? This is Ozbargain, not frequentfliers.

        • @tightwad:

well, Jetstar operated in Vietnam has a lot of delays too. All the airlines have delays, however, the national one normally has priority over the other two. If you don't mind half a day delay, then go with the budget one lol.

Are they using a Charter license?

Beautiful place, but remember a VISA is needed before landing - approx US$25 per person (adult or child).

There's the legit embassy way and the dodgy (yet still works) internet way - we used the latter no problems.

    • +2

      the internet way is fine,

      but

go the embassy way if you don't want to spend an extra half hour (or perhaps more) at customs waiting for them to check paper work,

But even if you forget you still can get a VISA on arrival, but again waiting in that customs lounge isn't great

      • You still need an invitation letter acquired online to get a visa on arrival. Definitely cannot show up empty handed. Some airlines won't even let you board without proof of the letter or Visa

    • Yea I also used the internet way. I still find it very stupid how you need pay a random for an approval letter which doesn't mean anything. I think I paid around 27 USD back in 2013.

Is the fee actually 25 USD at the Vietnamese embassy in Australia? I couldn't find the price listed.

Edit: It seems like the fee is $95.

      • Quick trip to the Vietnamese General Consulate in Edgecliff is an easy option if you're in Sydney. They generally get it done in a few days.

I was charged $50 (AUD) for the last visa application which was done in Nov 2016.

        • Lol wow that's a huge discrepancy between you and the blog. Ah okay.

        • @ronnknee: The Edgecliff option is different - definitely $95 if you send it to the embassy in Canberra.

        • @Ozymandias:

          Fair enough.

        • @ronnknee: Yeah a little dodgy as you can't find the fees on the general consulate website or at least I couldn't when I looked in November.

        • You can apply 5 years visa for $150 :)

      • +8

I'm pretty sure you'll be dragged away if you try to be a smartass to the immigration officers.

        • -4

          MasterCard then?

        • @jv: famous last words

        • +1

@jv: Vietnam Customs only take cash.

    • +1

I think e-visa will be available from 1st feb.

      • Ah that'll be good - as per some of the other comments - we paid online and then paid for 'VIP' clearance (I think that's what it was). I think essentially it was a local person who 'bribes' the VISA people to put you to the front of the line.

Whatever the case no lining up for the VISA, just the normal immigration / customs job as per other countries. Was good for a young family of 5.

Great, can combine with Jetstar gift card for extra 5% off. I can get Jetstar giftcard from Entertainment book, if anyone need help can PM me.

    • -1

      please provide the giftcard code.

      cheers

  • Is this a trap for a massive bill returning trip?

    • As i said in the OP, generally ALL Jetstar sales have a discounted return fare. They just don't advertise it as a return, as they sell individual sectors, not 'return' tickets. If you book a one-way flight from SGN-Australia then it will be charged in USD or VND.

  • +1

Wow this is cheap!! Finally another airline flying direct to SGN from SYD/MEL. It was ok when Jetstar was flying from DRW-SGN years ago.

    • They used to have direct syd-sgn around 2007 but stopped the route sometimes later

  • I was wondering what new Dreamliner flights they will put on after discontinuing their BNE-HNL service.

    • And MEL-NRT ending soon too

  • R.I.P Vietnam Airline.

    • +1

Do you know that VNAirlines own big shares of Jetstar Pacific VN? It's good to have some competition on this route so we can get cheaper fare for VNAirlines.

    • Vietnam Airlines owns 70% of Jetstar Pacific, Jetstar Airways owns 30% of it. Really isn't a competition as they're giving you a choice to fly full service or on a budget.

  • Does anyone know how airlines get direct routes to specific places?

  • +2

This is great news. Recently on the news, jetstar was shamed for removing passengers off the plane for not sitting at their allocated seats. A couple of years ago, flying with VN airline, I had naughty vietnamese passengers to and from vietnam. One sat in the middle row with my family, just to perve at a lady at the window seat. On the way back, a man was in my seat and he took the remaining 3 seats as well (in the middle row), to accommodate his wife and son so that the little one can sleep later on, that's 6 seats altogether. I asked if this was his seat or not, no apologies whatsoever, moves over just one seat, then takes the armrest as well. I was planning not to shower for three days to prevent this from happening again, but now I don't have to anymore. Thanks jetstar.

    • +1

Happens in Vietnam all the time. When I went there 2 years ago, 7 out of 8 flights had some knobhead try to take my exit row seat. The only time it didn't was when I was flying business.

  • this service is using the new dreamliner plane? is it safe?

  • I have a father in law that needs a return leg, pitty its not a return for the same amount.

    • +1

Maybe when the fares are available, check it out, and i'm sure you'll be surprised. Like I said, the flights coming back are 9/10 times around the same prices.

      • +2

I will, and sorry I forgot to say thanks for posting in the first place, So thank you OP

  • probably cheaper on return.. let's see

    • Based on airport taxes and govt fees, probably will be :)

    • +1

      Return is the same price

  • +6

I love that their airport code is still SGN.

    • +6

It is rare for airport codes to change when the city name changes - notable ones are BOM (Mumbai formerly Bombay), CAN (Guangzhou formerly Canton), PEK (Beijing formerly Peking).

Some of these flight times are brutal. Red eye coming back to Sydney, leaves SGN at 2am.
Regardless, these are crazy cheap, even with baggage. $388 return with 20kg each way. I'd be spewing if they left from Brisbane.

  • +2

    Those flight times are terrible!

SYD depature is 1945, with a midnight arrival into Vietnam. Depature 0200 and arrive 1400 back into SYD.

    Haven't checked melb times yet.

    • +1

Fortunately the Melbourne flight times are much more convenient than Sydney
Edit: I take that back - looks like most of the return flights leave at 2:00am

      • The 2am departures are via Sydney. Nonstop flights to Melbourne leave at 10.35pm.
Edit: Oh I see now. It changes depending on the month.

      • +1

        2:00am is not bad.

Means you can enjoy your evening, get to the airport 11pm and then board the plane and sleep

    • you'd be glad your flight depart that late, if you want prime 8pm depart time, chances are you're gonna have to leave the taxi 5km from the airport and walk with your luggage to the airport to catch your flight, traffic jam on the road leading to the airport is on the news pretty much everyday now.

  • wow and i can't even access the site anyway!

  • what were the hours? JQ site is becoming a bit unstable for me to load

    • Finishes at 2359 tonight.

  • When is mid semester break for secondary student?

Too bad I got ripped off during my last visit to Vietnam. I have no desire to ever return.

    • Mind my asking what happened?

    • Haha, all part of the fun.

    • Sorry to hear mate, mind I ask what actually happened?

  • -4

Prepare some $10 or $20 notes and you will be asked for bribery money by the airport officials.

    • +5

Have been multiple times and this has never happened. Tourists are very well protected in Vietnam.

      • +1

Last time, they asked me $20 or my checked baggage will be held for further investigation.

        • They use the $20 for coffee money. It is around $5AUD in Vietnam.

      • +5

Tourists are very well protected in Vietnam.

        Honestly not sure about that.

        • +1

When I was in HCMC ~10 years ago they had a special "tourist protection police force" that knew English and specialised in helping out tourists. Had one of them chase off a scamming cab driver who was trying to bill me 10x my fee.

The city has only gotten more touristy since then, and I always feel very safe when I'm there. Of course like any city in the world, there are still criminals that loiter near the busiest tourist areas.

    • +4

I ignored their hints, pretended that I didn't understand what they were after. They let me go after a minutes.

    • Such a shame to hear. I am from Vietnam and still have this issue as well

      • Just let them know you are a well known journalist from overseas and you'll be sharing the incident back in Australia

        • lol, journalist with asian looking face, you'd be considering yourself lucky if they escort you back to the return flight without spending couple of days in detention.
