ALDImobile - 1 Year Prepaid Super Pack $249 (Unlimited Calls, SMS, MMS, 42GB Data) Starts 4/2

5603

Was browsing the new Aldi catalogue this evening and saw this. Seems like a decent deal. Can't see it online yet. Updated to online link (thanks zzymurgy).

1 year "Super Pack". Unlimited standard calls, SMS, MMS, 42 GB data. Nothing in the conditions about the cost of extra data. On sale from Saturday February 4th.

Monthly sums: $20.75 per month. 3.5 GB per month - again nothing in the conditions about how the data works, I guess assume it's 42 GB up front until more info appears on-line. Aldi uses part of Telstra network and claims that covers 98.8% of Australian population.

what does the fine print say? any catch?

    • +75

The catch is: in August, half way through your year, someone else comes out with 4Gb and $18/month plan!

      • +6

You only save $2.5 a month, losing out extra 500mb at the risk of that not happening, and might not be Telstra network. With 1/2 year left you only could lose maximum $15 less than a month on this plan ($20.75) I think I can take the risks.

        • +3

Well said.. U sold me this plan.

    • +1

The catch is that it's an Aldimobile, not Aldi mobile. Probably looks the Homer's car..
      https://goo.gl/S5ePVi

    • From what i can see, there are no international calls on this *pack (when comparted to L $25 pack)

    • -1

The catch is you need to read the reviews for Aldi Mobile on ProductReview and Whirlpool. :)

    • The catch is MMS with video isn't included with this plan and therefore are charged against your PAYG credit at $1 per item which could potentially add up. It is still a good basic plan however.

    • Just went to Aldi. Manager checked all stores and said that the SIM is sold out! I can't believe this. It's a SIM. They should do better if more are for sale. Does anyone know when this SIM will be available again? I need to port out of a Telstra sim by 6 Feb.

      • It's a starter pack: SIM + voucher code. The SIM is actually generic.

What do you expect with 551+ votes? Probably sold out within an hour of opening yesterday.

  • Can you port the number?

    • +2

Port from another mobile to ALDI? If so, yes you can.

      • +1

So if I'm with Telstra at the moment, I can port my number to this aldi prepaid sim?

        • +2

I did and I ported back to Telstra just as easily

        • +3

@unifex: Why did you port back?

        • If you're post-pay with Telstra note that they charge a 2.50 port-out fee and remember to include it in your calculations.

        • +1

          @bradism: That's better than bl@@dy TPG's $11 to port out.

        • +1

          @RedHab: Yeah funny story

They don't support any form of international roaming so the phone is effectively dead while overseas. Thats fine but they also don't support phone call forwarding which would at least allow you to forward your calls to an office phone or similar (which I can retrieve voice mails). So you are totally uncontactable while overseas.

        • @unifex:

Oh when I was trying to do the call forwarding they treated me like an idiot. The first hour they blamed my phone and tried to get me to go away until eventually they admitted they won't allow you to call forward at all.

        • +1

@dealspider: Seriously? I just moved over to TeleChoice, and I didn't have to pay anything. I've been with them for about 7 years though.

EDIT: Nope… you're right. Just checked. Good thing I won $14 in the lotto last week.

        • +1

@flaminglemon: TPG is doing everything wrong and breaking all Consumer laws. Telstra charges only $2.50 for porting out.

        • +1

@dealspider: So is it something I can talk to them about? Or should I not bother? It's like they're penalising you for leaving them because another company is just being competitive.

Offer your customers more value then, TPG. It's not our fault we found a better deal.

        • @flaminglemon: I think you should. I am also thinking of giving them a call and hassle. A friend of mine did call them to complain about the charges being unreasonable, but the customer support guy was not listening to his story :(

        • @flaminglemon: when I left tpg previously I argued that the port out fee wasn't included in the original t&c when I signed up (which was several years ago). They then waived it and I got my deposit back. See also https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/182278

        • @flaminglemon:
Telechoice are great. Been with them now since, October 2016. Was a mobile customer with telstra 19 years.

        • Telstra charged me a port out Fee in November 2016 of $8. Been with them for over 19 years. Never again. Just a money grab.

        • @OldBugger: hey look, that's me :)

        • @OldBugger: same to me, TPG is terrible company when you are exit from them, PAYG VOIP deposit is non-refundable now which is not in my original T&C. TIO should look into this T&C to regulate the better Standard T&C to little consumers, otherwise how is fair go to consumers under these kind of "bully" T&C.

        • @OldBugger: They asked me to check my T&C. Turns out it was in there. Bah. And this was like 6 years ago. Ah well.

        • @dealspider: Just tried. Didn't work. They assured me it was on the the T&Cs. I checked my emails… and sure enough… it was there.

        • @unifex: Any idea if you could still received text messages while overseas? i know you can with boost at no cost.

        • @lethological: Nothing the phone wont even connect no roaming at all.

      • can i port my number from Vodafone?

        • Yes you can. Just make sure you're not currently in an existing contract else you'll get slapped with an early disconnection fee

    • "Can I port my number onto an active service?
If you’d like to transfer (port) your number to ALDImobile, you must do so when you activate your service.

If you have already activated your SIM card and you requested to receive a new number, we are not able to port your number onto that SIM card, you'll need to purchase a new one."

        • +5

curious, how long does it take for another personality to gestate?

  • +2

That's a decent price indeed. It says limited time, in your photo. Would people think that this would operate like their special buys, i.e., it's only around for a couple days then gone?

  • +5

My wife has Aldi account and I can confirm she has better coverage than Optus. I know that it is not the full Telstra coverage but we have not found a place where others on Telstra have had coverage and she has not.

    • +6

I know lots of people say Telstra is supposed to have the best coverage, but I wish I had better coverage than Optus. My phone is on a Telstra work plan (so hard to change carriers), but the reception around Mortdale in Sydney is rubbish. I often get no bars in some parts of the house and mobile data is patchy at best. Meanwhile, my wife on Vodafone seems to have great reception all the time.

      • +3

sounds like you need to jump on bandwagon28 then

      • -1

& Oatley is terrible for Optus but the cable was 100MB/sec……

      • +9

Agree with Vodafone, they are doing excellent in metro areas.

        • +11

Vodafone, they are doing excellent in metro areas.

Words that until this time in history were never spoken….

        • +1

I was in Tasmania last month and the Vodafone coverage is still awful. No coverage on east coast, nothing at Great Lake, 5mins outside Launceston or 5mins off the Midland Hwy it drops out.

        • @Consumer Sheep: Did you have roaming turned on? They share with the Optus network in some regional areas.

        • I use Voda in central NSW and works fine…..because they roam with Optus. I'm not even sure that roaming is on, I've certainly never turned it on. That's why I've gone for the Kogan 12 month deal.

        • @Brissy1: They have a deal with Optus to use their towers when Vodafone coverage isn't there (in some areas). For it to work you need to turn roaming on in phone settings :)

        • @apptrack:
Is the reverse arrangement in place?

        • @Joe888: Nope. Voda to Optus only.

        • Except Elwood, 3184, so bad they let out of my contract

We are talking 8km from Melb. CBD with one of the highest populations per area

        • +1

@Maverick-au: Vodafone was the bomb in the 2g days, my Philips Fizz never missed a beat

      • Might be a silly question, but do you have 4G/LTE switched on? Some areas have good 4G but terrible 3G coverage.

      • Not disagreeing with you, but have you checked your phone model number and confirmed that it supports Telstra's bands?

        • I don't think it's a band problem. I've got a Nexus 5x from JB (AU stock). Same reception problems with an iPhone 6 and my old Samsung S4.

        • @newdad: Oh, in that case I feel for you. Nice phone though.

    • +3

Unfortunately, I disagree with your coverage claim @Davro.

Huge chunks of Australia have no Aldi network coverage despite a Telstra presence and this includes many rural towns. Check Aldi coverage maps and you can easily see this. I got caught travelling in western Qld so had to buy a telstra sim just for this trip.

      • +5

Try Boost. Same full coverage as Telstra, but at prices similar to Aldi, with better coverage than them. I live in the country and am on Boost, having tried Aldi.

        • +2

Coverage definitely better with boost in rural areas compared to aldi, but their plans seem inferior. ie. year expiry with aldi versus 28 day or so with boost ? I think I'll stick with 2 sims: aldi and telstra with telstra for the rural areas not covered by aldi.

        • @redcreek200:

If you pay Boost monthly you get the full month.

        • @smpantsonfire: You have to set up auto payment. Auto payment occurs same day every month, making it as you say, month to month.

Coverage is full Telstra network, without 4GX speeds.

      • We changed to Aldi as we were travelling through Qld. Had finished out west though. Probably will find the spots you mention next year.
Our normal thing up till that time had been to get telstra sims when they were out cheap and use them.

      • +1

Hmm: is that a fact? That's weird. The Boost coverage map and the Aldi coverage map is different? Does Aldi know that? I bet they think they have purchased the same product from Telstra on the same network as Boost does.

        • I visited Tregole National Park and the local town (Morven) has Telstra (and Boost coverage apparently by the map), but no Aldi. Small towns west of Roma had Telstra coverage and no Aldi - uncertain of boost. Same story with small towns further west again.

You can see this when you look at their coverage maps. It just caught me by surprise initially with Aldi as I though it'd only be more more remote areas uncovered. These areas uncovered by aldi aren't that far in the bush.

        • @redcreek200:

I get it. I've never been anywhere that Telstra worked and Aldi didn't but I've been to plenty of places where neither worked. That's what made me think they were pretty much identical but I see I was wrong.

        • ALDI (and many others like Woolworths and Telechoice) are on the Telstra wholesale network. Boost probably signed a exclusive deal of some sort to be on the actual Telstra network.

        • @redcreek200: When did you experience this? Originally ALDI only had access to the Telstra 3G network, but back in May 2016 they got 4G access. I would expect that since then ALDI has same coverage (despite possibly out of date coverage maps?)

        • +1

          @psdillon:

I would expect that since then ALDI has same coverage

Telstra wholesale network is only a part of the Telstra network…so not quite the same coverage. One thing I'd say is missing is the 700mhz B28 4G.

        • @clse945111: Do you have any links? The stuff I've read claims that the wholesale network has all bands but capped download speeds for 4G, not sure about 3G.

        • @clse945111: I thought Boost was just a subsidiary of Telstra anyway?

        • @bloomer: Nope, Boost is still an independent company: https://community.boost.com.au/t5/Setup-Device-Support-KB/Wh…

Subsidiaries of Telstra usually say it out loud anyway, just look at Belong… like they're worried that people don't know them being owned by Telstra.

        • @psdillon:
Nah unfortunately… Not an insider of any kind but resellers on the wholesale network don't mention 4GX, which is the name Telstra uses for their 700MHz network.

        • @psdillon:
@psdillon, I've already mentioned in the post that you replied to where I experienced this.
Edit: Also, you mentioned Aldi had access to all of Telstra's nextg network. That's never been the case.

        • -2

          @clse945111:

          4GX is not 700Mhz

4GX is two LTE bands being used by a device concurrently. That is 700 & 1800 LTE.

        • +1

          @philart:

You might wanna double check: https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/telstra-4gx

It clearly says 4GX is 700mhz.

What you said was carriar aggregation which in Telstra's marketing terms it's 4GX cat 6/cat 9 (aka LTE advanced).
