Free Velocity Reward Points (7 Million Points Shared Equally between Registrants) from Velocity

3610

Velocity are giving away 7 million points to members who enter their details and velocity membership number. Everyone is guaranteed to receive points and the same amount (split evenly between everyone who registers). For example if 100,000 members register then each member receives 70 points (7,000,000 divided by 100,000). Numbers are rounded up (no decimal places).

Runs for 48 hours, 21/2 3pm - 23/2 3pm. The point amount will be announced 9 April (and credited shortly after I'd imagine).

      Who is running the promotion?
The Promoter is Velocity Frequent Flyer Pty Ltd (ACN 601 408 824) of registered address 56 Edmondstone Road, Bowen Hills, Queensland 4006

      • -1

The way website publishing. Doesn't look too professional to me.

    • +4

      Velocity Facebook Post for verification.

Edit 23/2: It's also advertised on https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com home page.

    • There are terms and conditions with the ABN number but still could be Dodgy

    • +3

Actually ozyboy got a point here, the domain is registered to SETH BELL, ROKT PTE LTD in Singapore and it doesn't have SSL encryption.

So the question here is, what is the legal concern for collecting people's sensitive information over a nonsecure channel? It can be 100% legit Velocity but how they run the campaign is not legal as far as data protection concerned.

      • yep, ROKT, that same crap that pops up after you make purchases on various sites like COTD

        • +1

yep, f*** rokt. im not giving them my details. spammy customer info sharing mofos

        • @blaze:
so, perhaps go into velocity account, change email address, register for comp, change back later.
won't stop the sapm, but you'll at least know how it originated!

      • hence still getting negs.

        • +1

Not everyone cares about protecting their sensitive information.

      • +2
    • 7,000,000 points = $42,000 split between how many people?

  • +53

Can't wait to receive my 5 or 6 free points

    • -4

Call me selfish, but why would anyone share this here… The less people that sign up the more points you get.

      • +9

Maybe some people are more generous than you? Sharing is caring.

  • Looks like phishing to me. Giving up your personal information. No thanks!

The domain has seems to have no association with velocity.

    https://who.is/whois/velocity7millionpoints.com

    • +4

That said it is linked on their facebook account… Either way, there is no certificate on the website so the data is not been taken care of as far as I am concerned. Domain is linked to a marketting company in singapore.

    • Website looks legit. Besides, they already have all your details anyway ;)

    • -3

Correct! Velocity Member support have just advised me that this is indeed a phishing scam. There are NO points being given out and it has nothing to do with Velocity

      • Can you share how you know this, a screenshot perhaps? I don't doubt you, it would just be nicer with definitive proof so that its easier to flag this.

        • -3

Hard to screenshot a phone call, but if the following helps to validate…

Phone call to 131875 (Velocity) at 4:14pm yesterday, 21/2/17. Call was 5 mins long. Male on other end asked me for details of where I saw the deal so he could check while i was on hold. Returned to phone to tell me that it was indeed a phishing scam and that it was not operated not endorsed by Velocity.

        • +2

It's advertised on their home page. He had no idea what he was talking about.

        • @puffinfresh: Thanks.

  • +1

Why the watermelon on the background?

    • +1

Velocity's 7 million point slice. Watermelon slice maybe?

    • A "slice" of fruit that's red in colour?

    • +1

How big will your slice be?

    • +2

Why no plates for the watermelon in the background?

    • I'll tell you later….

      SPAM

    • hehe i was about to post it.. :)

  • I put my details down. Will let you know how many points I get/if I get extra spam

    • +1

see above… in other words yes its likely you'll get spam'd ..

  • Also put down details to see what happens.

  • +5

Weird that it takes two months to announce the number of points?

Anyway, no-one else apply please, I want the 7 million points for myself.

    • +7

At maximum you'll we'll get 3.5 million points

      • Dammit! Fine, no-one else apply and we'll just split the points between us.

      • 2.33 million max now

  • I don't see any reason why velocity willing to give away 7M points.
Thanking loyal members and celebrate doesn't seems a good reason for me.

Anyway… I don't want to missed out if it's legit, so pulled the trigger.. lol

    • It's posted on Velocity's Facebook page - what more proof do you require to prove it's legit?

      • +1

Why would they give everyone free points?

        • +2

Because they can? By the time it's diluted among everyone it'll be giving everything a few hundred points which in isolation costs them nothing.

        • @jas0nt: The argument that it costs them nothing by diluting the amount doesn't work logically at all. Whether it was 7 million points going to 1 person or 7 million points going to 7 million people, it still costs them the same amount.

        • +9

          @Rupture:

Although I'm an accountant I haven't directly dealt with this issue, however my understanding is on the balance sheet when they're making provisions for the points liability they need to recognise (because the points are effectively a promise to give us something in the future) they can discount it by the probability it will actually be redeemed/used. Therefore, IMO a few hundred points spread across many people is less likely to be used than a much larger sum going for a smaller number of people.

        • +2

          @Shadowsfury:
          Cheers.

Or to dumb it down further, if you were the CEO of Virgin what would you rather:

Option A: Give one person 7 million points
Option B: Give 7 million people 1 point.

I'm sure you'll pick Option B because it will have an immaterial impact on your bottom line, whereas that one person will be claiming several first class airfares.

Come to think of it, this is actually quite a smart promotion - it costs them SFA (assuming publicity is good and the word gets out) and yet it raises brand awareness for VFF, and will probably sign up lots of new members.

        • @jas0nt:
There's a lot of jib cutting going on. Suits you.

        • @Magpye:
As long as I get promoted.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.

The more people that think it's a scam = the less people will submit their details = more points for me.

Funny how someone reported this deal as SPAM, yet a moderator posted the deal. Lol.

    • depends on how valuable you deem the details you provide are, to some its a scam for 100 or even 1000 velocity points to others it doesn't matter :)

      • -1

What makes you think they're being dishonest or fraudulent?

        • when did i use either of those terms? … terms and conditions are pasted above .. seems pretty straight forward and open to me.. up to you if you like it or not :)

        • Maybe my mistake, I read your comment as you saying it's a scam.

        • -4

Velocity Australia Member Support have just advised me this is a phishing scam. There are NO points being given out.

      • the details being a email address that isn't checked frequently … shrugs all good

    • -8

Funny how someone reported this deal as SPAM, yet a moderator posted the deal. Lol.

7 Million Points Shared Equally between Registrants

Why did you post this on OzBargain ???

A private PM to the most active OzBargain members would have sufficed…

    • +1

Need to add the sarcasm flag next time…

      • +1

It was an experiment to test the average IQ of people who vote on comments.

  • +1

Enter the comp, if you like, then log into your Velocity account -> preferences and untick all the stuff you don't want to receive.

  • +2

    Entered. I hope I win.

    • +2

Everyone that enters will win the same amount of points.

      • +1

I'm not sure that can work. What if an ODD number of people enter?

        • +1

The same thing could happen for an EVEN number of people.

What you should be asking is "What if the number of people that enter is non-divisble by 7?" to cover all cases.

Anyway, the answer is most likely rounded up/down to the nearest point. You won't be getting fractional points.

        • @ronnknee:

The same thing could happen for an EVEN number of people.

          true…

        • @ronnknee:

You won't be getting fractional points.

Why not?! They better not cheat me out of that extra 0.3258 points!
          (/S - I know they're rounding up)

  • -5

Thanks Op. BTW no need to wait till April - I rang up velocity to confirm the deal and they gave me free 100,000 points for being one of the first people to ring up! Now just have to work out where to fly…

    • +5

This is going straight to /r/thathappened

      • $1M%points

Official Virgin Australia page has also verified the Velocity FB page.

  • +5

Yep, it's a scam. None of you should enter this at all. They will steal your ID, your house, your wife, even your infant daughter.

    More points for me

  • +4

7 million points for updated customer info AND allowed to sell it to third party!??! Well played Velocity, great strategy.

  • Does it cost anything to open a velocity account?
I don't have one but might start using one soon

    • +1

      It's free to join. Link

    • +1

Join at BP you get 500 points to start with.

      • As in BP petrol stations?

        • Yes! They should have pamphlet there with a temp Velocity card that you sign up with.

        • so I grab an application form at my local BP station??

    • Thanks, will update.

  • -2

Registered myself and the wife. With family pooling - two slices for me… nom nom nom

  • -1

the more people sign up, the less the point is? lol.. we should do the opposite of sharing this.

    • +3

What's it like over there in jerusalem

  • +1

For me, it will only accept a US postcode. Just put in my postcode, but added an extra "0" at the end.

    • Worked today for me. Now accepting 4 digit postcode.

  • Estimates on how many points we'll get? I guess 83.

    • Let's collate the estimates. 67

      • +1

        42

    • +1

      <10

    • 250k people sign up over the 2 days = 28 points each

  • Where's the Ozbargain maths geniuses to tell us the probability on the number of existing and new velocity members signing up and consequently the likely number of points we are going to actually get from this promotion? Then correlate this to the value of a Velocity point so that we all know how much we are actually getting dollar wise for selling our personal information?
