Can SOMEONE PLEASE explain the utility of this to me…? Why not just a normal chromecast (Which can cast Video too), for the same price?

    What am I missing here?

Has 3.5mm out, can be used to turn normal speakers into wifi ones… Can't do that with a Normal chromecast

But if you have a normal Chromecast…you cast whatever you want on the TV…and (presumably) you connect the speakers to the tv also…hence, you play the music (controlled from your phone/computer/tablet, via WiFi) through your speakers.

It's for those times when a TV isn't required. You know when you just want to listen to music without video. I have one connected to an amp that drives my outdoor speakers. There is no reason for a TV to be part of the equation.

Also you can set multiple Chromecast audios into groups.
So I can have multiple speakers (bedroom, lounge and outside) all playing the same song at the same time. A'la sonos, but way cheaper.

@sallan75: Ahhhhhh! MY bad… I never consdiered removing the TV from the equation - I always considered Chromecast with TV/HDMI

I'm kind of with you. Or if you need a 3.5mm out, just get a cheap bluetooth adapter like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5mm-Streaming-Car-Wireless-Blue…

It'll do the job at least 90% of the time. But each to their own.

@spludgey: Though rather handy that Chromecast Audio doesn't use bluetooth.

        • @spludgey: I changed from a Logitech bluetooth adapter to the ChromeCast Audio. The ChromeCast has much better range (Bluetooth craps out if you move further than 10 m away) and the sound quality is better. And yeah, I have a ChromeCast connected to the TV for video and a ChromeCast Audio connected to the Receiver for music.

Basically imagine they strip out the video and replace it with DACs and amps (and optical) for audio.

With a normal CC you need to plug it into an AV amp of some kind to access the sound - with this you can get at it directly.

Mind, it should be more like $25 to be a deal - that's how much I paid from the UK.

      What am I missing here?

You're missing the world's largest internet advertising business knowing your music and podcast collection.

I have one of these and it basically made me use my $5,000 sound system so much more than before. Your phone doesn't have to be out of action/running out of battery and using clunky software such as Yamaha music as the streaming actually occurs on the device connected to your Wifi.

The functionality of this device is very limited, but it does one thing very well. Streams music. Highly recommended for a mere $43.

    • well…you dont require a tv might be handy for some. iv hooked it up to my stereo. its nice. all chromcasts support flac now i believe…which i didnt know at the time i bought this..but it was on special…and well…i like music…

    • Multiroom is the unique feature I use the Chromecast Audio for. Allows you to cast the same music to multiple ChromecastAudio or ChromecastAudio enabled speakers and it will play in perfect sync.

  • It has a pretty good DAC for the price. Plus, using a normal chromecast with 3.5 out from tv or similar relies on the TVs DAC, which can be poor.

    • yeah good point. my original chromecast i get the audio via optical from the tv….but my stero has no optical and i use a cheap fiio dac. (still sounds good tho) the audio version is good for some people. but most people dont have any clue what good music is..so it doesnt matter what the quality is…shit gonna be shit. pay the 2 bcuks and get plex for your phone. its very nice. server for pc is free.

Great kit. Rockin' 2 of them here for different ends of the house. Just wrapped up the cricket on TuneIn Radio, ready for Friday night RAWK. Wife can cast her spotify, I can cast my google play music, kid can cast our plex music lib. Good times.

  • As per @NigelTufnel, these work well when you group 2 or 3 together and they all play together (or 3 different streams), kind of like a budget Sonos system.

  • If I'm reading some comments online correctly, it will only cast for Spotify if you have premium?

    • You can cast spotify basic via chrome web browser. You simply cast via the google cast tab and not the standalone spotify app, which will only cast with a premium account.

      • Thanks, good to know there's a workaround.

        • You're welcome. Cast tab is in the top right hand corner of chrome. Begin casting and audio played in the web browser will cast.

Have one and it's great but it has a nasty habit of continuing to stream in the background from Google Music on its own even when I've stopped streaming Google Music to it from my phone. The only way to stop it is with my computer through Chrome.

I agree! I have that problem with my regular Chromecast, What a pain in the a$$…
I will buy 2 at this price though, and try them out. Thanks OP

  • Anyone knows what's the quality like when decoding Hi-Res files such as 24 bit flac and DSD?

  • Reminds that Google's four months uncharged music trial must be ending in about 1 month, and this would be fine for that app if but when the price is right.. .

    Good.
Sweet if returns to November's low $ 30's range, for a better improved buy.
