You may be wondering why we are offering you car rental for just $1, but there is a logical reason behind our crazy offer!
Often we need to relocate a vehicle due to increased demand in a specific city or to return it to the manufacturer at the end of its lease. Transporting vehicles by truck can be expensive. Our One-Way deals give you the opportunity to relocate the vehicles for us at a price you can't beat. Find a pick-up and drop-off location that suits your travel plans and we both benefit!

At time of posting, these locations & vehicles are available:

  • Sydney Airport to Canberra Airport (1 vehicle)
  • Adelaide Airport to Melboune Airport (3 vehicles)
  • Darwin Airport to Alice Springs Airport (10 vehicles)
  • Perth Airport to Broome Airport (10 vehicles)
  • Wellington Airport to Auckland Airport (11 vehicles)
  • Christchurch Airport to Picton City (11 vehicles)
  • Christchurch Airport to Nelson Airport (6 vehicles)
  • Queenstown Airport to Christchurch Airport (14 vehicles)

i did this once, ended up in a Toyota yaris that broke down half way

    • +81

Sounds like a very memorable trip you will hold on to forever

    • +5
    • +30

I know this is a lie because yaris don't break down.

      • +1

Trying to take it back with 25ml of fuel left?

        • nice try but you won't be able to start it

    • +6

It probably just didnt have the guts to get over a speed bump.

  • Interesting. Might take this up one day.

  • +9

Fuel costs not included, just FYI. Comes with a full tank, must be returned with a full tank

    Perth -> Broome airport = ~2400km
    Get a full-size car or 4WD, 10L/100km = 240L = ~$360

    • +6

      that makes sense.

      • Some of these 1-way moving companies include a bit of money towards fuel

        • +1

it is like an incentive for customers to relocate the cars for them from 1 to another location.

        • +1

Usually it's for cars that end up out of the state and have to be sold in the state that they are registered in.

    • +6

As opposed to paying full retail for the one way and then having to refuel as well? Most of these one way rentals at normal retail will be between $200 and $400 JUST for the one way - excluding daily rental and fuel.
Is a good deal if you require it in that time frame and don't mind the chance on getting either a small car or something big.

      • +6

I upvoted, but was pointing it out as an FYI…

See here - many are $1/day (not flat rate like this offer) but include $100+ of free fuel

        • +1

True… some do give a fuel allowance.
Worthwhile taking the full insurance if you do this.

        • +3

@xywolap: You are generally better off getting travel insurance from the likes of One Cover as it covers your all your excess as well as other things for a lot less than what the Car Hire places do, the main downfall is in the event of a claim you could end up out of pocket for a short period when you have to pay the HC their ridiculous excess but haven't yet received the insurance payout.

      • +1

Yea Spackbace's comment definitely didn't seem like a dig at the deal. You got a bit defensive there Sarge!

        • +3

No not defensive. Just pointing out the blattenly obvious because of the number of times I have to do it in a day. I usually talk/type slower as well for those that aren't really swithed on.

        • -1

I kinda agree with Sarge on this one.
Of course fuel isn't included … the company would be losing a shit tonne on every relocate and would be cheaper for them to fly down and drive it back up themselves.

I would just imagine this as a standard rental situation (fuel, insurance, excess etc) except they're not charging you the rental fee for the car.

Good deal nonetheless if it fits your itinerary.

  • +8

    Does this include insurance ?

    • good point, insurance on a loan vehicle is normally outrages.

      • +2

        Wtf.. That's "outrages"!

    • Yes will include insurance. Does still have an excess.

      • +11

The usual $3k excess charged for a stonechip or scuff mark inside a truck/van?
        Europcar have a reputation…

How much is the $0 excess option?

        • @jv: haven't seen that one, tanker driver is as much of a (profanity) as the bloke from thrifty. Makes you not only never want to use their business again, hopefully he contacted head office and demanded a refund.

Also clearly a hire car worker downvoted you.

    • Usually does but only the basic issue… best to pay and reduce the excess.

      • +7

Best to use domestic travel insurance that covers insurance rental excess as it is generally cheaper.

    • +3

Many credit cards provide rental car insurance as part of their features

      • +2

        Many don't too…

        • +1

          Now that doesn't sound like a bargain…

      • +2

Isn't that only if you are on holiday and you booked your flights with them?

        • -1

          usually…

        • Not for my card, I just need to use it to book the rental

        • @Hellman109: Nice… which card is that?

        • Velocity AMEX, got it from an Ozbargain deal a couple of years ago and have stuck with it.

But most "rewards" or premium type cards have it as part of their features, same with international travel insurance and stuff.

    • Check your credit card benefits (if you have Gold / Platinum) before hiring a car - generally they cover rental excess so no need to pay the rental car company for it.

  • +1

Is this available to green P platers?

    • No

      • +24

So you discriminate based on colour ???

        • +39

Yep but mostly because I'm colour blind. No P's in red or green.

        • @Sarge2401:

I thought you Europeans were better than that.

        • @Scab:

          That's why they're exiting :P

  • -6

Not really a deal - considering you can do one way transfer cars for free with Thrifty in NZ.

    • +2

0$ vs 1$, splitting hairs are we?

      • +4

        This is ozbargain

  • Are these usually last minute? As in you can't book in about 3-4 months in advanced?

One thing I wouldn't want is the car to break down halfway between te Anau and Milford sounds. Hmm

  • +5

Nothing to do with the deal just my experience dealing with Europcar recently. Booked via website and confirmed a Rav4 from airport to blue mountains came to pickkup and was told no Rav4's left and had to pay extra $120 over my budget to the next SUV available. Was really frustrating either website is lying about available vehicles or the customer service person wanted to try upsell me. Lodged a complaint and havnt heard a word from them for 3 weeks now… Never Europcar again

    • Europcar does have a reputation.
Most car rental co's have these deals so look around.
A common one is from Wellington… lots of cars to go back up to Auckland.

    • +10

Most rental companies would just give you a free upgrade afaik

    • +1

I had the same happen to me in Melb, booked a Volvo XC60, ended up with a Merc C Class, was charged a upgrade fee of $120, I disputed it on the day of pick up and was given a refund of the $120.
I contacted their FB page and got a call an hour after from the Melb airport location.
      Was sorted easy

    • +8

Stand your ground. They should have upgraded you for free.

    • +3

They definitely should always upgrade you for free, if you have a guaranteed car class booked and it's not available. If they try to get you to upgrade, show them your booking and tell them it's their problem, not yours.

  • +6

Things people might want to watch out for:
    a) Europcar are notorious for trying to sting you for damage already on the vehicle; make sure you take a lot of pictures showing the condition when you get it.
    b) These moves usually have fairly agressive dates for delivering the car - you will be basically driving it from a) to b) without much sightseeing.
    c) Make sure you are adequately insured for the drive.

  • Is there any chance that for a person aged 22 with a full license, the young driver surcharge can be waived for relocation rentals?

    • +1

No. Under 25 is high risk for any insurer let alone car rentals.

  • Link for one-way deal in NZ?

  • +2
  • I drove NZ last year and used APEX car hire. They offer one way rental for no extra charge and were much cheaper than Europcar too.

  • Wish there was a Newcastle > Syd offer :(

  • This should be a pamphlet they hand out to backpackers as soon as they get off a plane! Winnahh

  • Also check out Transfercar.co.nz (or transfercar.com.au in Aus)
    All cars include insurance
    Some include fuel

  • Did this ten years ago. Picked up car at Christchurch airport, had 48 hours to deliver to Picton, so took the opportunity to visit Franz Josef and do a glacier walk.

  • These deals are good if you're sharing the fuel cost, have a lot of luggage and they don't make you rush over 2 days (otherwise it feels like a job).

  • +1

    ozbargainedddd : (

  • Anything from Sydney to Melbourne?

  • +2

Please update title with 6.4% cashback factored in. Total cost $0.94.

  • Why not free? Why charge a dollar

    • Because there will always be someone that pays. You may not think its a deal but the next person will. Not like anything is made off the rental

      Edited spelling

    • Their online booking system may not understand how to have a $0 booking.

Or they want to cross there I's and dot their T's and make absolutely sure its clear that your a customer (and not a temp employee relocating cars without compensation).

The system charges $0, but "Steve" from IT is embezzling thousands from the company. It'll take a while.

Don't worry, "Steve" didn't see me out him. He had a seizure reading the second sentence.

Amazing what people up vote. Years back car rentals used to pay people to return cars to the base, now you need to pay and they don't even cover the petrol.

People taking such crappy deals are the reason why companies can screw us like that.

Feel free to neg me as much as you want

  • -6

Nothing special here, most all rental/car companies do this.

    As per the voting guidelines:
    Appropriate uses of negative vote
    Cheaper price elsewhere

Imoova actually offer to pay for petrol, ferry or other costs on many of their relocations.
    http://www.imoova.com/imoova/relocations
that makes the entire process much cheaper even if the actual rental cost is only $1 per day in both cases.

Just a few examples at time of posting:
Alice Springs Perth Fuel: $250 free fuel against receipts
Brisbane Darwin Fuel: All fuel refunded (against receipts) and $100 travel allowance
Brisbane Melbourne Fuel: All fuel refunded (against receipts) and $100 Travel Allowance
Brisbane Sydney Fuel: All fuel refunded against receipts and $100 Travel Allowance

  • +2

    CAUTION with these 'deals.'
A colleague at work booked a 3 day one way drive from Adelaide to Sydney. He returned the car 1 day early (actually he was only 2 hours early but they count days in 24 blocks from time of pick up) and was charged an excess kilometer charge. He's still fighting the extra charges they pulled on his credit card.

More explanation: They allowed 500kms per day over the 3 days (1500kms total). He delivered the car early so they deemed he only had it for 2 days with equates to 1000kms allowance. They charged him an excess km penalty for the extra 300ish kms he did.
Yes this was the logic they used!

    Beware…

    • atrocious!

  • This imoova is cool. Might try get a motor home relocation Brisbane to Melbourne or something!

  • did this once, turned up to broome and the car was no longer needing to be moved.

  • I will never need this not for many years..I have no idea why I even positive voted this.. I think I have an Ozbargain addiction.

  • -6

Want to put your credit card in jeopardy, then the answer is "what is invisible hail damage?"
    No deal Europcar

  • +3

I've done this a number of times through www.coseats.com.au but with campers, much better value because you get to sleep in it ;) normally get $50-200 free fuel too

  • Seems only to be one car in DRW and one in PER now. You'll need a few to go to Broome in winter won't you?
