Good prices but not sure I would want to support the economy of Turkey whilst old-mate Erdogan is dictating.

    • +10

Yeah. Such a real shame Turkey is regressing into an intolerant authoritarian Islamist hole. We barely hear a peep out of what is and has gone on there especially in terms of the widespread purging across so many sectors, and imprisonments. Such a shame what was a beacon of light in that part of the world seems to be gone with little hope in sight. I imagine it's probably still OK for a male tourist in touristy areas but that doesn't cut it for me. Turkey was on my short list of countries i really wanted to spend some time in and explore. :(

        • +22

If you think Turkey is heading in the right direction, then perhaps it is you who is missing something.

        • +5

HAHA. You're joking right? Turkey is waging their own war against the Kurds, and has now transformed a democracy into a semi-dictatorship. People are now being jailed for daring to question Erdogan. Smells like the early days of Nazi Germany, although thankfully Turkey doesn't have the economic or technological ability to end up at a similar apex.

        • +4

"Separation of church and state" religion is used by the state to control and suppress

        • +3

@bohdud: Waging a war on PKK terrorists. Kurds are treated the same way everyone else is treated in Turkey and Turkey is allies with Iraqi Kurdistan.

        • +1

@risto I read that like the AFL.com.au sliding doors article :P

        • @Protato: "Kurds are treated the same way everyone else is treated in Turkey" as long as they stay quiet and follow the regime's rules. A la Syria.

      • -1

And then there's the substantial risk of terrorist attacks, as Turkey is effectively the transport gateway between the Middle East and Europe.

      • +16

along with the USA, the Uk and australia i suppose.

    • -2

How dare Erdogan turn a backward, bankrupt country into a Middle Eastern powerhouse…
Time to introduce a western supported coup that will bring down a democratically elected leader…

      • -2

Yeah I remember when Hitler turned Germany's economy around too…

  • +2

mmm i wouldnt mind visiting constantinople

    • +10

This is only to Istanbul unfortunately, Not Constantinople

      • +4

        Yes, Istanbul not Constantinople

        • +1

But if you have a date in Constantinople…

        • +3

@DirtyBoots: …she'll be waiting in Istanbul.

        • +2

@Meconium: even old New York was once New Amsterdam

  • Not a bad price but would rather go when its hot depending if you like winter

    • +1

during most of october, you can wear only a tshirt in istanbul. not winter at all.

      • I was there at the end of August last year and it was quite warm -we went swimming. I would have been quite happy to go later.

        • yes. august is the warmest month.

    • Might be warmer when Trimp drops the next MoAB

  • +6

Great city to visit! I've been there twice in the last year for business/holiday.

  • +5

    Free Coup, included?

  • +1

    Free extended stay provided.

  • +2

The 6th attraction is the erosion of democracy.

    • -1

every democracy has its ups and downs

      • +5

        This is the down part.

        • +1

We never see the up part funnily enough, and I mean in general…

    • +3

The focus has been on Putin & Trump while Erdogan has fundamentally dismantled any shred of democracy created by Ataturk.
Turkey will follow the same change Iran did when there was a monumental shift towards conservativism. Such a shame as it's a beautiful country with a rich history.

  • +8

you guys sound like you only travel to democratic countries. lol.

  • -7

DFAT recommends you reconsider your need to travel to Istanbul because of the high threat of terrorist attack. This is the second-highest warning level out of four.

I think it's irresponsible to be advertising this as a wonderful place for tourists to visit at this time.

    • +23

they thought manchester was risk-free until last week.

      • So better just to stay home then.

    • +1

As long as you keep don't do anything stupid and keep your head you should be fine.

      • With all respect, I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation like that to begin with.

Why not go somewhere nicer like Japan or Fiji

        • +2

Japan with uncle Kim firing missiles??!!

      • I would like to keep my head.
This is why I wouldn't go there right about now.

    • Well isn't that great. I'll be in Istanbul for 3-4 days mid june. Wish me luck.
(I'll note down those locations to check out though)

      • +2

You will be fine lifes a risk anywhere you go

        • +11

Oh yeah. I'm not worried. I've been in the middle of "riots" before in Thailand. I've seen more concerning crowds at boxing day sales.

        • +1

@Spectator: Same here. Getting groped by a horde of ladyboys was not fun!

    • +2

      More seats for us

    • +1

DFATs warnings are political half the time.

Iran for example, is by far the safest country I have travelled out of the 60 plus countries, I have travelled.

I think it is irresponsible for you to spread crap and rehash the DFAT fluff.

When I board a plane heading IST last year, some Turkish intelligence folks were checking paper upon boarding.
Saw bunch of Syrian refugees on the street, trying sell some refugee camp supply for cash.
Kids begging for food. Etc etc..which is sympathetic however also looks like grave security risk.
i.e) "go detonate this suicide vest, I will take care about your family"

A few weeks later the very Airport got exploded - l think local political situation is least of your concern.

    • +6

I wouldn't doubt that Turkish Security was checking information as it's happened the 3 out of 5 times I've gone there. Is it a bad thing?
Seeing refugees on the street is no different to seeing refugees in Germany and France? what is the difference, did they have suicide vests?
I find these type of comments sensationalist in nature. Was there days before the bombing and afterwards - did refugee beggars do it?
That same trip I was in Nice for the terrorist attacks there, happens throughout Europe. It's a risk of travelling.

      • Is it a bad thing?  - Not a bad thing but alarming thing, indicating elevated level of risk

Seeing refugees on the street is no different to seeing refugees in Germany and France - so are you claiming Turish government has equal or superior vetting ability compare to Germany and France?

did refugee beggars do it? - If refugee beggars can cross the border, trained terrorists can do it as well. Seems you have no idea how country level security layer works.
Nonetheless, seeing no security risk from people living under the line without any social security provided seems utterly naïve to me.

"I had nice trip although few bombs exploding and people dying" isn't really good travel tip of any kind.

Yes I too had good trip and still alive but wouldn't recommend it to friends and family, period.

Antalya is a fantastic destination within Turkey (coastal/tourist friendly place)
Also, make sure you visit LC Waikiki - which is the Uniqlo of Turkey (made in Istanbul)
Some of the best meals I've had in my travels was in Turkey. Cheap eats too! My best meal was at a dive restaurant from "Romaans" which are akin to gipsies IMO (possibly not! welcome to be called out on it)
Go explore! Just don't go near the borders and you should be relatively safe.

    • +2

yes they are gypsies who live in turkey. They are neither nomads nor refugees. they are residents as much for ages. Turkey has the largest gypsy population in the world.

    • +2

Did some great shopping there last year and doing it again this year. Turkey is a beautiful place to holiday. Parents live in Antalya in their retirement and I'm looking forward to having a good time there. Great food and I reiterate great shopping. Oh, that L.C Waikiki, great shopping for the kids and really cheap for quality clothes. The food, yummy.

I also saw none of the bad stuff people are talking about, but I too stay away from the borders.

    • Yeah I'm keen to check out a store called Pull & Bear. It was a randomly awesome store I went into in the Philipines. They also have one (possibly 2) in Istanbul. Think I'll be packing light.

      • there are 13 stores of pull and bear across all over Istanbul. also 2 in antalya if you would like to go there also. And yes, Istanbul is a heaven of shopping.

  • +4

Make sure you go visit Salt Bae's restaurant!

  • Without getting bogged down in security discussions, it's interesting to know the perceived value of different deals. Like was the Milan deal at $900 better or worse value on Air India? And if you could get $800 first class tickets to Syria, Yemen or Libya would it be worth going just for the airline service?

    • where do you get 800$ first class tickets to libya or yemen ?

  • +3

Great country to visit! Full of history with lovely people and amazing food. A strong and stable government has really helped Turkey prosper in the last 14 years (thanks to erdogan) and become a lovely place to visit. This deal looks great. Very cheap and you cant go wrong with singapore airlines. Thanks for sharing 🖒

Yeah Turkey's got some great things going for it. But Kazakhstan is still number one exporter of potassium. All other countries make inferior potassium. Kazakhstan, therefore, greatest country in the world. All other countries are run by little girls.

Welcome to OzBargain, second best bargain site in world. KazakhBargain make first always.

      • Ok then. Go kazakhistan!
