PS3 PlayTV - $58 (Incl Postage) @ DVD.co.uk

800

PlayTV from the Dvd.co.uk website - £31.41 excluding VAT.

Including postage to Oz, works out (for me) to £35.40, which is under $58… quite a saving from the retail price of ~$130.

Tuner will work here in Aus?

    • +4

Yep - see here for import FAQs
      http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv_imports

      • Thanks for the reminder - looks like if you're in a regional area, you will need to find someone who has the Australian version of the Install CD, unless the UK model ships with 1.21 out of the box now.

        From the FAQ:

The version of PlayTV software on the disc (1.0) cannot be updated until it has been successfully installed. This includes scanning for and finding channels. Thus people in regional areas cannot update the PlayTV software to 1.21 (which allows UHF scanning for Australia). Regional PlayTV owners could consider banding together to purchase an Australian PlayTV when released and then sharing the install disc. Alternatively, take your PS3 somewhere that receives VHF transmissions to complete the install and update the software. When and if Sony ship PlayTV in the UK with a disc that contains the 1.21 version of PlayTV this will no longer be an issue.

        • Ok i will ask here and i dont understand and no one will talk in layterms :(

So if only with UHF signal:

Can i buy the UK import
Update online with 1.21 in a capital city and then bring back to a regional area and it will work??

          or not?

          tia

          • @princessmya: If you only have a UHF signal, you won't be able to use the UK import if they still ship with 1.0 out of the box, if they ship with 1.3 then you will be fine, however, there's no way of confirming this until someone gets their item.

If they ship with 1.0 out of the box, then the only way you could it to work in a UHF area is if you borrow someone elses Australian PlayTV disc (which came with 1.21 out of the box).

You can't update to 1.21/1.3 online, unless you have completed the initial set up - which won't work for version 1.0 in a UHF only signal area.

    • Yeah it does I bought mine from the UK months before they came out here in AU, its been working a treat ever since.

  • Nice!

    • It is coming! yes!

  • Very nice price. I got it on release for like 130 and i thought that was great value.

  • Great deal but also looks like similar price over at amazon Uk.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/27…

Don't know what DVD.co.uk shipping is like but amazon uk is crazy fast,I bought two box set blurays with normal shipping and it arrived in less than 10 days.

    • yeah but you cant ship it from amazon, as its electronic or something.

    • Just tried. Amazon doesn't ship this item to Australia.

      • Yeah, it sucks they don't ship other things other than DVD's and CD's. Some other items on there are cheap as.

  • +1

The Delivery time for DVD.CO.UK is about 10-14 working days….Its has some good deals on games too!!!

    • My previous purchase experiences with them have been a lot faster than 10 days. Also rumor has it PlayTV 2 is due to be released soon

      • but according to "rumors", does the release of new hardware affect only UK and countries with certain transmissions and not Australia.

Or is there speculation that the new hardware will mean a better experience or more functionality to the current PlayTV in Australia?

  • PS: Price has gone up to £36.91.

    • Yeah that is correct price you just have to exclude VAT

    • No, they take the VAT off when you ad Aussie address. Just ordered @ £35.40

And you won't get your referal credit from DVD.CO.UK

    • huh?

    • Yeah is that a referral in the link provided?

      • I copied the link straight from ecogamer - can't find any mention of affiliate links on dvd.co.uk's website, so I don't they've got affiliate links (like say play-asia do). Searching for it on their site gives the same link.

Happy for mods to update if someone finds otherwise.

        • -2

I was refering to the affiliate link above from Amazon (ref=redir_mdp_mobile) not the OP. Not sure but it looks like it to me. If it is then the poster should declare it instead of hijacking. If it isn't then my appologies

          • @Quick Ink: nah that was my posting link whilst on my ipod touch thus "mobile".

  • Last purchase from dvd.co.uk took 5 business days for me

  • omg so cheap, not sure if it's worth it though considering u can just torrent stuff from tv rather than recording it

    • it will record in HD and makes a nice addition to torrent stuff

  • Will this be able to pick up HD channels as well?

    • yes

    • But it doesn't record HD

      • +1

According to whirlpool it can record HD channels in MPEG2 format, but only in version 1.21.

        http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv

"HD Recording officially supported (MPEG2 for AU, MPEG4 for NZ)."

        • wow, thanks for that. damn, mpeg2? That must be huge…

          Really appreciate it +1

  • +1

Buying this from the UK means it isn't Freeview compliant and therefore doesn't have the same limitations (copying shows, ad skipping, 100x FF) as the aussie version? Or does updating the soft/firmware make it freeview compliant?

    • +2

See this link for your answer http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv. quoted below:

"Does getting the UK version mean the Freeview restrictions aren't there?

No. PlayTV uses a worldwide software application. The Freeview restrictions are applied when you select a state in Australia during setup. If you select 'other' or 'rest of world' the Freeview restrictions are not applied. But you cannot tune UHF channels (SBS in the cities, most/all channels in regional areas)."

      • +3

Surprised the software hasn't been hacked then. Come on you uni IT students. Do something useful :p

        • +1

          no.

        • +4

          Too busy drinking, sorry.

  • Great price. Thanks for this post! Ordered one

  • I am looking to buy this.
but as i am REGIONAL.. can you tell me what this all means to me?

Does it not pick up our regional channels?
    prime NBN etc?

    • Again see this link http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv_imports. Thanks whirlpool. See quote below:

Where does an imported PlayTV definitely work?

PlayTV is confirmed to receive digital television signals in the following areas:
Melbourne via the main Mt. Dandenong transmitter only (may not work in South Yarra / Ferntree Gully)
Sydney (does not work in some pockets of Sydney)
Adelaide (may not work in foothills)
      Brisbane
      Cairns (depends on transmitter)
Canberra (WINTV only displays Now and Next in epg) – Mt Tuggeranong does not work
      Bundaberg
      Perth
      Rye (Vic)
Where does an imported PlayTV not work?

Regional areas are less likely to work due to the UHF band frequencies digital television uses in regional Australia. The 1.21 update resolves this, however not import risks detailed above.

      • So can you update with the 1.21?
or it wont work either on an import?

        • +1

Completing the installation relies on being able to see at least one transmitter. Provided you can do this, it installs. Then you update the software to v1.21 and you can see all Oz channels as any PlayTV bought in Australia would - no fundamental difference between the two.

If you can't see something, then you are stuck unless you find someone with a copy of the v1.21 version of the code.

          • @sane: Thanks Sane
            is the 1.21 avail online?

Can i install in a capital city (ie brisbane) then bring back to the regional area and it will work?

            • +1

@princessmya: Take your PS3 and PlayTV to a location with at least one working transmitter (and a net connection) and you are good to go. You can take the upgraded PS3/PlayTV combo back to UHT-land and it will work fine. In general you'll find one, somewhere, even if its poor quality. Its only a question of getting through the install.

Mind, by now they might have started shipping 1.21 with the PlayTV - its purely down to getting that installed and working on your box. UK versions might still ship with 1.0.

And nope, for the insanity of Sony, you have to get the install to work once for you to be able to upgrade from online, no other way. Which is stupid, but typical of Sony (IMHO).

  • finally a bargain that interests me, nice find

  • Great deal and site, I just ordered Play TV & Playstation move for $130 AUD delivered!

    • Hi, did u order them seperately or was there a deal?

  • Anyone help to find out if it will work in COffs harbour?

    • it seems we are UHF - so it is useless regardless where i buy it?
      is this right?

  • great price, want one of those supra shoes as well :p
There is a play tv2 coming out? what extra would it have over the original?

  • Guys this is also compatible with Windows and Linux with the correct drivers! Cheap for a dual channel tuner!

  • Just ordered one, nice price, lol. i love impulse buys

  • how come the webpage itself says free postage within uk?

    • because its free post inside the uk?

      • +1

sorry, to clarify. the ozbargain link say free postage (to Aus) I presume, but the website only mention free postage within the UK. Is there free postage to aus?

        • nar its 3.99 GPB post to australia.

          • @camMMM: cool, got it. Thanks. Ordered one. Now the waiting game :). Hopefully this is better than my POS teac hd settop box that seems to crash everytime you fast forward a time shifted recording

  • as great a deal as this is, im going to pass this up, ps3 hdd just seem to small for the size of the recordings and there are cheaper ways to get the digital signals

    • What strange reasoning. The drive is easily upgradeable and this is not just a TV tuner its a PVR.

      • I've installed a 500gb HDD I wish I could go bigger

      • -1

        still too small for me

  • Fantastic, I've been contemplating ozgameshop's price…this is better. Hope my credit card doesn't slug me with some huge conversion fee though!

  • Thanks got one, anybody know of a cheap HDD I can get for ps3?

    • +1

MSY have cheap HDDs. Just grab any 2.5" HDD. The Samsung 640gb seems the best value for $. Be sure to backup your PS3 first and also load the latest firmware onto a USB stick.

      • +1

Careful, some 2.5" drives are thicker than others, and there's a limit to what the PS3 can accommodate normally. You need 9.5mm rather than 12.5mm drives.

The Samsung M7 640GB drive is 9.5mm, so its OK.
        The Toshiba MK1059GSM 1TB drive is 12.5mm - so it doesn't fit.
(well OK, you can make it work if you pull the PS3 apart and don't use the caddy)

    • +1

I've used the Medion "drive-n-go" drives that Aldi have had on sale from time to time.
The cases are very easy to open and I just swapped them over.

  • mine have shipped :)

I wonder if they had stock for so many people that ordered???

I have a feeling some people will miss out.

I can't imagine them with hundreds of playtvs o_0

    • same here. Delivery in 5-7days

    • Me too. Got an email earlier today.. well yesterday since it's past midnight now.

    • Just checked mine, and its on back order, so I guess they dont have stock. Will give it a week to see how it goes.

      • when did you order?

do you remember how many votes or clicks the post had when u made the order?

        lol!

        • We ordered our pretty late. I think it was Saturday morning so it was still available for a while since it was posted up.

        • Yeah saturday morning, but all good as they must have got more stock. Its now changed to shipped!

  • hmmm… I'm trying to find ANYWHERE whether it's possible to use TWO of these with the one PS3… I'm guessing not, but hey, they DO have more than one USB port! haha

    • The question is, why would you want to?

It's already got two tuners, so you can record one channel and watch another. It doesn't have enough processor bandwidth to record more channels, and you can only watch one channel at once - so it's a bit of an academic question, no?

  • +1

I received mine today.. and.. I can't get SBS =S I've played around a little bit with location settings and software updates. First time I booted it up, it was still on 1.00 so I set the location to other. Then I updated, and set location to Aus - NSW, then to Aus - VIC and I still can't get SBS! Setting location to Aus - NSW/VIC allowed me to find one extra channel that I couldn't find on other though.

I get: ABC, Ten, 7, Nine, One, GEM, Go! (variants of them)
Total: 18 TV channels, 2 radio channels

I'll probably try ask for help on the forum or somewhere else, but thought I'd just leave an update!

    • lame, i haven't got mine yet :(

  • I received mine, selected location 'other' (can't select AU), after tuning in northern melb suburbs (bundoora area), i get 17 channels and 2 radio channels, the HD channels aren't as great as I expected, but have only watched about 10 minutes of it. Very easy to setup. The disc and the manual inside do not indicate ANYWHERE what version the software is, can someone help there?

    • You can check that in the Settings -> About section, and from there you can also update the software. You have to have network access (internet connection) enabled though, otherwise you will need to quit PlayTV and re-open it.

I agree with you, HD channels (only tried OneHD) aren't as clear as I had expected them to be. Looks much better when it's just on normal tv.

Are you able to get SBS? I was also only getting 17 TV channels and 2 radio channels, but when I upgraded the software and changed location to Aus, I got 18 TV channels and 2 radio channels. I don't know what the 1 extra channel was as I didn't care, I was mainly trying to get SBS and I still couldn't get it.

By the way, when you upgrade the software for PlayTV, it will automatically revert location back to UK, so you have to manually change it to Aus or Other (depending on what you want). At least that's what happened for me.

      • About to get mine in these few days, have been shipped.

        Illumination can you please advise

        1. the software version after updating from the internet; also what do you mean "otherwise you will need to quit PlayTV and re-open it."?

        2. when updating, will it also update the firmware of the PS3 itself?

        Thanks in advance.

        • +1

          1) Software after updating from the internet is 1.21.
What I meant was, assume you want to upgrade the software of your PlayTV. Basically, the requirements are, have it completely installed/set-up, and have your internet connection ON before you start PlayTV. I don't know about you, but on the PS3, I only have the network connection on when I am actually using it, otherwise I just leave it off. I loaded PlayTV before switching on the network connection, and I tried to update it, and it said something like "PlayTV must first be closed and network connection needs to be on before this can be done".
All I'm saying is, you can't have PlayTV open, press the PS button and then switch on the network connection. It just won't let you for some reason. So I'm just saying make sure you have your network connection for your PS3 on before you load PlayTV (when you want it updated).

          2) No, it won't. It just updates the "game" software (game in this case is PlayTV) and that's all it will touch. I made sure this was all it updated =P

  • My play tv came earlier this week but none of the other items are ordered like the remote or the nav controllers have made it even though some were posted before the play tv…hoping they don't get lost.

    • I ordered mine on the 8th and the company emailed me that it was shipped on the 12th. It said that it would normally take 5-7 days to arrive. So to me it is a bit late now. But I would wait for 28 days (as the company suggested) before I contact the company in case it didn't come.

I am in Canberra and if received I'll able to tell others if it could receive SBS which is on UHF, after upgrading the firmware to 1.21.

  • Hmm same with others… I haven't received my PlayTV even though it has a status of "shipped" on the 13th of october. getting to the worry period…

    • If it is any comfort, ours was shipped on the 13th as well and still hasn't arrived. At the same time we ordered a ps3 remote from the UK a few days after it and that one arrived mid last week.

    • I ordered mine on the 8th and it just arrived. I'm in Brisbane. I think the other people who received it earlier are in Sydney. Not sure if that makes a difference.

  • If anyone's wondering, I still can't receive SBS signals with 1.21 and location set to Australia -> NSW, but I ordered an antenna amplifier off eBay hoping that it will fix the problem. I had a feeling it was a signal issue, and based on a bit of feedback I got off whirlpool, that is what I decided on.

    • +1

Got mine this morning, set up and updated firmware to 1.21. Unit able to pick up all channels in Canberra including the the 4 sbs and 2 sbs radio stations. (total 21 tv stations + 4 radio stations)

Recorded a short program and is ok with closed captions displayed on play back.

Also can do daily and weekly recordings from menu even though have not tried.

Detailed instruction on how to use ps3 control to use the playtv.

Overall quite happy at this price.

    • I'm in Brisbane and am able to get all the sbs channels. In total it found 27 channels. I had some initial issues setting up as I had the wrong country selected. Prior to the update I had to have it set to other, Whig then allowed me to download the 1.21 firmware. After that my scanned channels had no reception. The fix was to set it to aus/qld and all appears to be workig ok.

  • just got mine in today am looking forward to testing it out, thanks.

    • me too! They boxed it too. I was expecting it to be in a cheap padded bag.

  • just got mine guys. unfortunately though, like many others, here in Melbourne I cannot get SBS channels. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get SBS?

    • update the firmware to 1.21, rescan the channels by selecting au then vic. It should pick up sbs if it is broadcasted on UHF frequencies. See Illumination thread above.

More detail see whirlpool links below:

      http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv.

      http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv_imports

    • kpet's suggested solution seems to work for most people (ie. upgrade firmware to 1.21, rescan after selecting AUS + state). Not working for me, and I'm still waiting for an amplifier that I ordered off ebay to arrive. Then I'll try playTV with the amplifier and hopefully it will then be able to pick up SBS channels. I think my issue is it's just too weak, and it's too weak even on normal TV.
