Borders - $20 Credit upon Membership Card Application and Card Activation

850

I was walking through Borders at Chatswood when I noticed the promotion for $20 credit upon membership application.

You need to activate your card (ala Rebel sports) online.

As the promotion has just commenced today, the salesguy said that there may be some teething problems.

Mod: Changed to direct link

mod Also note, some members write that you have to choose to pick up the card in store or the card will not have the credit on it.

One member wrote that the credit lasts 1 month only.

Update: No email from Borders as yet to confirm my membership application although the Saleslady suggests their IT department is working on the problem - should be rectified tomorrow Sat 13th although I wouldn't hold my breathe.

  • I saw this mentioned on Whirlpool today too details mentioned were as you have posted

  • +3

I buy everything from bookdepository these days. So much easier and cheaper.

    • +3

Same here, although this is still pretty handy for the rare occasion you might want a book immediately. $20 credit + buy during one of Borders frequent 40% off sales = bargain. :)

      • +1

I don't mind paying a little bit more to shop in a psychical shop. A $20 credit is just a bonus and will keep me going there.

        • Didn't know there were psychics in Borders. Gotta go there more often.

    • No one in Australia can beat BD prices with FREE shipping!

      • +1

Borders in most situations cannot beat BD prices, but they do have FREE shipping

    • The poster I mentioned was after an ereader and cover so he was getting reader first and $20 off the cover on second trip, would be handy in that instance. I agree though I almost always use BD these days

i buy after looking on booko.com.au

Your $20 reward is available for one month after joining the Borders v.i.p. loyalty program.

The direct link to the deal is here - http://www.borders.com.au/vip

Please note inorder to qualify for the $20 credit you have to pick the card up from a Border's store. It you select the option to have it mailed out it tells you that you won't get the credit.

Could someone please tell me how you log out of the account once you have signed on?

    • go to the home page. 'Sign Out' is in top right hand corner below 'checkout'

      • Thanks, couldn't see it on my screen, even if I scrolled right to the end of the page. I had to reduce the magnification from 100% to 75% before it showed up.

    • Where did it say so?

  • +2

Planning to pick up my card tomorrow. I hope we can use this on magazines!

    • I hope so too - that's all I buy from Borders! Either mags, or things from the Typo store that's in the Chadstone Borders :o)

  • +3

it keeps saying this when i try to sign up for it :(

"An error has occured when trying to sign you up. Please try again later (200)"

Worst birthday (year) entry field ever.

      • I agree, it was horrible…

        • Don't think it works on Firefox.

  • Ditto

  • Mine worked fine just now with Safari

  • Is there any way to tell that it's worked? Also… Are we allowed to use the credit in store at the same time we pick up the card?

    • You should get a confirmation email right away. At least that's what happened with me.

  • +3

i had trouble completing the sign up, until i entered date of birth as yyyy-mm-dd

    • +1

Hate it when companies ask for date of birth and other unnecessary personal info. Surely a year is fine for their demographics and there are smarter ways to prove account ownership/reset passwords (if required).

      • Yeah it seems so pointless, I just put a fake birth date.

        • I think it's necessary if you want your card - I got asked whether my birthday was what I put on the site. Also, some companies e.g. Chaos.com and IKEA FAMILY send you vouchers for your birthday ($5 for Chaos.com, free princess cake for IKEA FAMILY). Maybe Borders will do the same (I'd be surprised if they did).

  • I got a confirmation email but it doesn't have that much info on it, do you just print that email off and take it into the store you allocated to get your card?

  • So I can get this if I'm already on the Borders Shortlist mailing list? If so then this is brilliant. Borders is the only place I can find that has rare foreign DVDs with decent subtitles.

  • Good deal.

Didn't knew that Borders did a price match. Seems pretty decent price match policy. Please see below.

    The Borders Online Price Guarantee.
At Borders we are so confident that our pricing is competitive with prices on any .au and .nz website as well as Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk that if you purchase a book from borders.com.au and then find it listed on any .au, .nz website, Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a lower price (including shipping costs to an Australian address), then we’ll refund the difference plus 10%!! Learn more about the Borders Price Guarantee

That policy is pretty mediocre, considering shipping is included in their calculations. Now if they price-matched Book Depository…that would be a decent policy.

I recently compared prices for a book I was considering buying. Amazon.com had the book listed at a cheaper price than BD, but was more expensive after shipping was calculated. Price match at Borders, and BD still came out cheaper.

  • In the email, it says that an electronic voucher has been attached to my account. However I can't see that anywhere. Any idea?

  • I selected the option to pick the card up in store but they said they added $20 to my VIP Card? It makes it sound like I already have the card.

"Your VIP Card is now loaded to spend $20 in store.

We'd like to welcome you, to Borders v.i.p.
You are now set to start taking advantage of all the benefits that being a member offers, and as promised, we have just credited a $20 reward to your member account, which you can use against an in-store purchase
We look forward to seeing you in store or online soon!

    The Borders v.i.p. Team"

    • so your card with 20 dollars is ready to be picked up at store. if you selected to send the card to your house, they wouldn't credit the 20 dollars onto it. Thats what i think.

  • I keep getting this "An error has occured when trying to sign you up. Please try again later (200)"

I filled everything but I still get this message.

  • I'm also a bit confused here. Do I pick up the card from my nominated local Borders?

    • If that's what you chose, yep.

    • It says to pick it up from your "nearest" borders so you should be able to pick it up anywhere. They probably don't make the card for you in advance they just have a pile and then associate one with your account.

  • Just collected my card from my local store, but the $20 isn't on it yet. IT problems. It's going to take a few days before it does. On the bright side, I already have 18 points! Must be from my past online purchases. That could be a IT problem too, though.

    • Did you show the email to redeem the card?

      • Yep - on my phone and to ask about the $20.

  • +1

I still buy plenty of magazines from borders so this is a still a good deal.

  • Haven't been able to complete registration the whole day…

keep getting this “An error has occured when trying to sign you up. Please try again later (200)”

    • Use IE, not Firefox.

  • So just to clarify:

    1. do you firstly sign up online then go into the store with the email and collect the card; or
    2. collect the card first from a store, then sign up online, entering the card number

Also, has anyone confirmed that it can be used on magazines?

  • Went to Rouse Hill Borders and got my card and bought a comic book with my $20. No dramas, good find :)

    • So it actually showed up on your card? Did you sign up beforehand before collecting your card? I went around 2:30 p.m. to Parramatta and all it said was that I have 18 points. I checked just now and I still have 18 points and no $20. =|

I don't even understand how I have 18 points; I've only spent $13 at Borders online so far.

  • The girl version of comic book guy at Chadstone Borders didn't know what she was doing. She activated it and then said I have to buy something and then I receive points worth $20. I argued and said no, nothing on the website said any of that and she just replied with "my manager is right". Anyways it's activated but my points still say 0.00 :(

  • the instore didnt know how to do it either and finally signed me up but still i have to wait 24-48hrs before i get $20 credit. i think its quicker if you sign up in store and then go home and activate it you still get $20 according to the poster in store?

  • +2

It seems all the staff in stores have no real idea how to do this. In the end, I just got given a card, then I had to go home and use yet another email address to re-signup, and now it says it is good to use.

    • Same thing happened to me. :(

  • Saw a $60 book at Borders, at BigW it was like $19. Books are marked up sooo much

  • +1

Got my card from the store yesterday
    Activated it online last night
Got an email says I have $20 credit to use in store

Went to the store today (Borders Chermside QLD), picked up a Book $19.99
Register girl doesn't know how to do it, manager says there is IT problem with the system regarding this offer at the moment and ask me to wait a few days

They put the book on hold for me…

  • Received and email from borders regarding the $20 credit and they said:

"You can only gain loyalty points by making a purchase, the $20 credit will be loaded onto the card for you to redeem when making an in-store purchase."

  • Good offer but Borders really doesn't have it's act together based on comments. What's the justification for it's high prices again? ;-)

  • This is turning out to be a big fail. I signed up online yesterday and went instore to pick up my card.
The sales assistant simply gave me a new card without linking the card to my membership account.
When I log in on their website I can't see any option on how to link my account to the card. Any help would be appreciated.

    • I couldn't find anything either, so had to just create a new account.

      • So, if you create a new account does it ask you somewhere to enter the member card number?
I can see that option on their register page: https://www.borders.com.au/register

        • Yeah it does. Register for VIP account and it does.

  • I signed up a few days ago, set the option for instore pickup. Got an email confirmation from borders almost immediately. Went to the store today, with a printout of the confirmation email, and got the membership vip card and the $20 off my purchase. The guy at the till did say they had been changing the way things got done 3 times in the last week. Anyway, they just put my email address into the system, and all was good.

Just found this on the Borders FAQs page:

    $20 voucher

At present the $20 reward is not being applied to your v.i.p. loyalty account once you have complete the online signup. We are working to correct this problem and will advise you by email when fixed.

The $20 reward should be applied once you have joined loyalty online and have you Borders v.i.p. loyalty card. This reward should be applied automatically but at present this is not occurring. We are working to fix this issue and expect this to be corrected early next week (week commencing 15 November). Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this causes.)

Also, quite a long 'short delay' when applying points from online purchases. Bought a book yesterday for $17 and it still says I have 18 points. Methinks Dymocks' similar rewards program is much better at this point …

  • +3

Do Borders and Myki use the same system developer?

  • Anyone gone back in and checked if it works now?

  • Yeah - still not working and I still only have 18 points. Sent an e-mail for help, but so far no reply …

    • Just had a response from the helpdesk regarding my points - you can't earn points for online purchases yet.

  • I sent an email as well on Monday but no reply.

Ok- so I have actually spoken to someone at Borders in Adelaide that knows what is going on. Apparently there is a bit of a stuff up (no kidding) with them being able to access the shopping voucher on your card. If you go to the till with your goods and then they scan the goods and your card and say you owe them the actual price of the items totalled ( ie they haven’t taken the $20 off) and you ask them “what happened to my $20 voucher its been days since I joined up”? Don’t believe them if they say “ it isn’t showing up on your card yet”, If they actually delve further into the computer system they will be able to see that you have a $20 voucher ready to use- unfortunately they wont be able to access it! The only way you will get the $20 off is at this point to ask for the manager, they are the only ones that can override this “glitch” and get the voucher so they can take it off your transaction. You can only get the voucher when you buy something so make sure you do this in the next three weeks now.

  • The help ticket I submitted last Friday says that my $20 is on my card now. Shall try again on Friday.

My 18 points apparently come from a purchase I made on 11/10/10 around 1:30 p.m… . pretty sure I didn't buy anything from Borders on that day. O_O

Maybe Borders should test their systems/processes before involving/frustrating customers? I can suggest some books they could read in the "… for Dummies" section ;-)

  • I know its been mentioned a couple of times but they were separate comments.

I also get the error when trying to sign up. Website signup/login OK, but VIP thing is stuffed.

"An error has occured when trying to sign you up. Please try again later (253)"

Tried FF on 2 PC's, IE and Chrome. All give the same error.

I'll just try my luck in store. Their signup process is useless.

    • Same thing happens to me, damn Borders get your shiz together!

  • Happy days! Finally got my $20! Bought $16.45 worth of magazines as all the Popular Penguins I wanted weren't in stock. Kudos, Borders!

    • Did you just go in store and it worked? Nice.

      • Yeah. The helpdesk said that my $20 was loaded into my car, so I was ready to whip out my phone with the e-mail saying so in case it wasn't, but it showed up! I still have $3.55 credit left; you think I can use that before it expires or is it strictly for one purchase only?

They also gave me points for the credit, too - now I have 35. =)

  • Went in store to pick up a card. Registered under new email (the one I put online was a bit too complicated for me to bother spelling out only to have them put it in incorrectly).

Card registered online, got email saying $20 loaded onto it. Now for a 2nd trip there :/

  • I just picked my card up, but was informed there was a two-day lag on my account being credit due to the overwhelming response of this scheme. Just a heads up

  • So I signed up for this but have not had time to collect the card instore but on Thursday arvo I was sent an email from them offering me "my first VIP experience" which was for free movie tickets all I had to do was register, problem being the registration asked for my card number as I didn't have it, I just entered my borders customer number and SCORE today they emailed me free movie tickets to Fair Game tommorrow night YAY :)

  • Made use of 20% discount offered at Borders Chadstone, bought a book for only $4.79 :D

I should probably check out bookdepository since so many OzBargainers recommend it.

  • I'm still getting this;

    ×Borders AU
An error has occured when trying to sign you up. Please try again later (253)

    So bloody annoying.

  • Hi all,

If you are receiving the error has occurred. Please try again later (200) when trying to sign up check the date of your birthday.

I realised it stupidly starts with your birthday at 2010, so I was putting my birthday as 12/12/2010 therefore my birth technically hadn't happened.

I had to click all the way back to my year of birth and correct date and it worked.

It worked fine for me. I signed up online for our 5 family members, & went into the store, & got books, magazines & cards for them. All you need to do is tell them your name, & they look it up in the computer, scan a Borders card, & give it to you. The only stipulation they said is that you can't combine the $20's to tally up the total. So, 1x $20 pays for 1 lot of books/cards/mag's.
This was a great find, thanks:)

    • so you were able to collect stuff/use your family members' cards(without them being present)?
If so, what's to stop people from using the same story to get stuff for themselves and say they're getting it for their family?!

    • Did they actually let you use 5 cards at once?

      • It was not a problem to them. The girl even wrote our initials on the card in texta;) So far, I've only 'spent' 2 of them. The teen used his own.

  • does any one know when this $20 promotion will end?

  • My mistake- I re-read the fine print down the bottom, & you can't buy `giftcards' with this.
    Impoze-
There doesn't seem to be an end date on the conditions.

  • bought a mug the other day, with $5 to spare

  • I think the promotion has ended…

  • Spoke a maanger in one of the shops and the promotion ended last thursday.

So you must have signed up on Thursday 9th December to qualify for the free $20.00 credit.

    • tHAT totally sucks. no incentive to join now, specially when i can buy from book depository for 50% off borders prices.

    • but the 20 dollar credit is still there for use?
