They'd do this now that AFL and the like are all finished :)

  • Chromecast built in but no Netflix app listed.

    • that's right but possibly can still just cast to the device rather than use the android app?

      • That won't work unfortunately

      • From the foxtel FAQ

Can I Chromecast Netflix through the Foxtel Now box?
Unfortunately not. This functionality is controlled by the app owners and in this case, Netflix has turned off this capability.

Foxtel Now content as well as content from most other service providers should work perfectly over Chromecast."

        • +2

          Sideload not possible?

If not, the utility of the box hangs either on Foxtel reneging and adding a Netflix button to their remote (unlikely to happen) or someone attaining Root access and changing the build.prop (most likely) to make it look like something else so Netflix will install.

    • Will be Googlecast not Chromecast

      • +1

I think the current preferred branding is just 'Chromecast built in' as Google cast was confusing people.

    • "According to Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh, Foxtel is in talks with Netflix but it's up to individual services to make their apps available for the box on the Android TV store."

      • Why cant the APK be side-loaded? Let me guess, Foxtel blocked this in the OS because they are DHs.

        • You can but the app won't work.

        • @jackofspade:

I'm confused. Is this actually an Android TV box or is it ASOP Android customized by Foxtel? I don't get why an APK wouldn't run? People sideload Netflix all the time.

        • @PainToad:
It's an Android TV Box but looks like Netflix have gone out of their way to block this device.

      • i read that Netflix wanted a dedicated button on the remote but foxtel said no

purchasing from eBay will mean you won't get the 2mnth bonuses.

Do you reckon that they are trying to phase out the iQ2 - iQ3 boxes with Foxtel Now?

In the near future, I bet Foxtel will only be a 'Online Streaming' service.

      • +3

yep, they know exactly whats going on, in the future i bet they will only be online. Costs a fortune to upkeep a satellite and cable network.

        • +4

Even though I have Foxtel myself, and I rarely watch it; I do prefer an actual Cable Box instead of relying on Internet Service to stream their content.

          That's just my opinion.

        • @Lil B:

Plus there's no ability to record. Miss an NBA game…to bad…there's no recording or catch up streaming.

          POS service.

League Pass is much better (but still has problems).

      • No, they are just giving people what they want whilst keeping their main platform as a 'premium product'.

E.g. Deliberately making Foxtel Now only 720p instead of 1080p.

They are releasing a new satellite box next year, which will support 4K and have 4 x the processing power of the iQ3.

        • Foxtel confirmed its 1080p where original Foxtel is still only 1080i

  • +2

Paying for a terrible app. Zzz

    • I've never had an issue with the app, works perfectly fine for what I want. What exactly don't you like about it?

      • +4

How they name series and episodes. How they display and list series and episodes. No autoplay. Shows suddenly show up as not available on current subscription. It's actually a terrible app.

        • yep its shocking at times but its the only way of having easy access to changing packages online compared to the traditional box and having to painfully negotiate with a customer service operator to have it removed.

          Quality is ok though!

        • @adam456: but can't you just use the app? You don't need a box to do it right?

        • @OnlinePred: you can, i guess people still like the traditional remote / on screen experience

  • +3

Can you stop your subscription after the two months and still use as a chromecast, netflix box?
Then just subscribe on occasion to watch the likes of GOT?

    • +1

Why not just get a Chromecast? You can us Foxtel app to Chromecast GOT anyway. Waste of space in my mind. Also cheaper.

    • +1

yep, you can, according to the Faq's you can just use it as a normal android streaming box / chromecast if you dont have any current foxtel subscriptions.

Yes you can resubscribe whenever you want

    • Netflix can't be installed on it via official channels.

  • Presuming Foxtel Go login doesn't work as it would make a nice portable way to watch on different TVs?

    • Yep different products

    • -1

a foxtel go login should work with this. foxtel go is the mobile device app name. i have foxtel go app, foxtel now app on multiple devices and the 1 login works on all devices

      • +1

Nope Foxtel Go login definitely does not work with Foxtel Now app - believe me I've tried many times and there are dozens of forum posts full of Foxtel satellite and cable customers who are furious that Foxtel Now is off limits to them as it is an infinitely better app than Foxtel Go. The main reason I would love to get Foxtel Now going is because it actually streams in HD whereas Foxtel Go is still all in SD.

Foxtel Now APK available and reported to be working on Mi Box and MECOOL Android TV boxes:

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?r=55087070…

  • +1

    $104/m lol wtf?

    • for all the channels, so still cheaper than traditional foxtel but obviously via internet delivery.

      • +1

so still cheaper than traditional foxtel

        But missing channels.

  • Can you sideload Netflix on it?

  • +2

Stupid Murdoch. Just release an app for the apple tv already instead of making a new device

  • +1

The box does not seem to be better than most other boxes (especially Chromecast which can stream Netflix). To me it seems that the deal is really:

$50/month for 2 Months Full Foxtel Now Access plus free "Crippled Chromecast Plus" (no Netflix or Amazon Prime streaming, but has TV tuner and remote; aka Foxtel Now box)

    Is that about right?

If so, it could have been worth it if the 2 months covered something worthwhile (like GOT), but expiring 31 January prevents that. I suppose it's the cheapest way to get a longer trial of Foxtel Now.

    • +1

      Is that about right?

      Nope, not right.

This can stream everything that a Chromecast can, with lots of other advantages.

Personally, I would probably go with the Mi Box. But I certainly wouldn't pick the limited and overpriced Chromecast.

      • OK - so is there a way to select Chromecast and then stream everything like a normal Chromecast? If that is the case I would alter my comment. However, I am confused by Foxtel's own comment:

        https://www.foxtel.com.au/now/support/how-it-works/devices/b…

Can I Chromecast Netflix through the Foxtel Now box?
Unfortunately not. This functionality is controlled by the app owners and in this case, Netflix has turned off this capability.
Foxtel Now content as well as content from most other service providers should work perfectly over Chromecast.

To me that suggests it cannot stream Netflix via an App or via its built-in Chromecast. Can anyone confirm that the Chromecast features work as normal (including Netflix and Chrome browser streaming? If not, it's a deal-breaker for me and the box is indeed a Crippled Chromecast, albeit with other features.

    • The hardware is reasonably good, if you can put up with the software being Foxtel centric and them potentially blocking more apps like Kodi.

I would rather a 4K Android TV device with Chromecast built-in over a vanilla Chromecast Ultra.

  • Agreed (meant to be a reply to Trosticles)

  • +1

I won't say how, but yes, I'm affiliated. I'm also a mad gadget geek and spend entirely too much time lurking on ozbargain (dammit I want rgbw yeelights or even better lifx!) so am entitled to have my own opinions like the below.

Just to see if I could, the first thing I did was install or sideload a bunch of apps I didn't think would work. Among others, Netflix sideloads (ironically generic sideload instructions and apk on Netflix site) and opens … But i don't have a login so that's as far as I can go. Happy to test if someone is trusting enough.

Chromecast (ultra) is obviously more portable so I'll still take that travelling, but Now box has the advantages of having a remote and obviously does 4k, FTA, Foxtel etc.

Tbh, along with wifi lights and smartplugs etc it's just another part of my Google based smart home. There's a couple of features I really wish it had, but seriously, for the same normal price as an actual chromecast ultra I made another TV smart and that's fine by me.

    • Yeah, I really can't see why a sideloaded APK wouldn't, work if this is really vanilla Android TV.

      • I don't think there's anything anyone can do about being able to sideload in Android, but it's not vanilla, that's for sure.

    • Is it the ANdroid TV version or the Phone/Tablet version that you've managed to sideload?

      • I'm guessing it's the phone version, but whatever I get from this page.

        https://help.netflix.com/en/node/57688

        • +1

Yeah, from the description, it looks like the phone app.
The Android TV version is navigable by remote control.

        • @scubacoles:

It might still work. I paired the remote to my phone for fun and was still able to control apps.

        • @bry-bry:
The phone version should work but not the TV version.

  • Apparently they've blocked Kodi. Ignorant dinosaurs sure do run Foxtel.

  • I grabbed one on release day and I can't really complain. It's good for someone that has a Chromecast before and no smart TV to have a remote for someone access without the phone. I'm actually preferring the on demand setup verse the old iq2 I had. And the ability to manage channels as I wish. 5 devices max and 2 concurrent users both suck and need to be updated.

Spelling is a bit crap, tl for a phone

  • Bought one thinking I could login with my Foxtel Go/Satellite subscription but no dice. Hopefully in the future someone will release custom firmware to turn this thing in to a standard android box then we can install the Foxtel Go app, until then it's pretty much a paper weight.

    • +1

will never happen. Foxtel Go and Foxtel Now are two completely different things. Robbing Peter to pay Paul if you ask me. Confusing marketing.

      • True, I wonder if it's possible to get some sort of mobile phone emulator on android TV that can run the mobile apps kind of like how you can run mac OS on windows with VirtualBox.
