Coverage… Telstra is definetely better in majority of cases. Not just in rural area.
Even in shopping centres. I carry 2 phones (one with Telstra, one with Optus). In a number of Coles supermarkets, Telstra NextG is working fine, Optus, there is either no 3G and at certain spots no 2G/voice reception. We are talking fairly big shopping centres. In Dandenong Mountains, you might as well turn off Optus phones. No doubt Optus and Vodafone are better value for money, but Telstra's coverage is definetely better, especially for voice.
However, nothing is 100%, there are a number of places where I found Optus provides better signal, but Telstra still works in those places. That said, Telstra customer service is quite inconsistent (pretty much luck of the draw).
chansthename on 29/11/2010 - 16:15 ¶Not sure if I agree simply based on the fact that the wildfire has XDA support which is amazing (essential in a phone for me now)

uniquemobiles on 02/12/2010 - 16:20 ¶Hi Mate
Sorry we no longer stock the HTC Desire and no word on the HD model as yet

If you are going to offer mobile phone deals, and you already offer ZTE phones, why not do people a favour and offer the ZTE Blade in Australia for the equivalent price that Orange offer it in the UK - $160 ?
Rather than the Wildfire, which is pretty much a feature-phone 320x240 standard phone - the ZTE Blade can a least keep up with the usual Android standard today.

First, if it sux, as several as you say, why isn't someone voting it down a peg, ie, with a negative vote?
I happened into a Telstra dealer this arvo, to get a quote of $550 for the HTC Wildfire (Next G).
Perhaps to disuage me from the $279 deal, the salesguy told me you wouldn't get all the Telstra
software/config with it, at that price. (True or False?)If True, is there any value in the Telstra/Next G software for this phone? What would you lose,
ie, if it weren't there? He also said it's not "Blue Ticked" for good performance in the Bush, etc. where even Next G can
tend to fade as you travel.(They had a ZTE handset with a tiny telescopic antenna, that you can also get a short "patch lead"
for, to connect to an external antenna; they had a ~11 cm small mag/mount antenna for ~$40, &
a longer one - with a better mag mount - about 35 cm long, for ~$50, for which you'd need to buy
the $20 patch lead; and he said the likes of Dick Smith should have a much longer one - for the
bullbar? - with lotsa dB of antenna gain (over a dipole, I think) for ~$180 or more.He printed off some sheets (from Telstra's site) on the Telstra Explorer… was that the ZTE
that's been blue ticked? (dunno, but I don't see the top of that tiny in-built antenna,
that the ZTE on display had poking out a the top… :-/.Anyone know about the ZTE line (with ext'l antenna & a port for a larger Next G antenna or
patch cord t other antennas?TIA.

Not getting the Telstra software - that is actually a good thing (though I suspect you might stil get them). Majority of those software would be to entice you to use Telstra premium services.
Not getting NextG settings - no big deal either, just google for the settings. The specs says 850/2100 for 3G so that's means NextG. $550 for a useless sticker (blue tick) and Telstra bloatware…. That's definetely a negative.
Unsure about this deal though. In terms of phone.. I reckon either get the best or the cheapest.

It really comes down to whether you want the Telstra Bluetick or not. If you live in the rural areas, then this deal is OK. Not great — but a saving is still a saving.
If you don't need Bluetick, congrats, you can save yourself the pain and get yourself a much better phone. This deal isn't for you.
It's a shame but Telstra frequently shafts it's customers by charging a hefty premium on these BlueTick approved phones.
