Acer Aspire 4315-100508CI Notebook $399 After Cashback from The Good Guys

On The Good Guys’ website it is $588 with $89 cashback (which brings down the total to $499), and I have already posted about it two month ago here. However in this week’s issue of Southern Courier (local newspaper for south-eastern suburbs in Sydney, link here, March 11 issue), go to second page where the ads are (you might need to install some browser plugin), at the bottom right hand corner the same notebook is listed as $488 with $89 cashback — so it will be $399 after all!

I know the quality of those low-end Acer notebooks is not that good but it is a very good price for a full blown notebook running Linux. Here are the specs:

  • CPU: Intel Celeron 1.86GHz processor
  • RAM: 512MB
  • HDD: 80GB
  • LCD: 14.1” WXGA
  • Optical: CDRW/DVD Combo
  • OS: Linux

From a comment from the previous post it appears to run Ubuntu 7.10.

Sorry my mistake. The cashback amount is $89 instead of $99 — so still $399 for this Acer notebook.

Not sure if Good Guy honours the price in the local newspapers or not. And also does anyone know the cpu is upgradeable?

Dick smith selling for 499 (after cash back) same spec except the screen is 15.4”

PS we have a 4315, get on fine with it, Ubuntu GG rocks! …but a slightly bigger one would suit the wife.

The ‘no tv-out’ problem is solved by connecting the S-video cable to TV & laptop before powering up. Took us weeks to find that out, no thanks to Acer. Useless support, no signs of intelligent life there!
