  • Can confirm that it's available in my local store (Bass Hill), but they only had 1/2 left last week.

    • +19

1/2 left? Did someone take the modem and leave the box?
Typical Bass Hill.. leave halves of everything lying around.

      • +6

        You only get one antenna

how can u have Ranma of a modem?

      • +1

        hahahaha now there's a memory I hadn't considered in forever… :)

          SIP or SIMM?

Must we pour hot water to get female modem o_o

  • +7

    TIL Kmart sold IT gear.

    • it is from china!

      • +7

90% of what Kmart sells is from China

the remaining 10% is vietnam india bangladesh etc.

        • Yup they list their suppliers and country of origin here. TP-Link is a Chinese company though :P

        • @Clear:
Thanks, absolutely nothing from Australia. Wow. Surely they can find something to sell from the country in which they derive profit - toilet paper?

      • Why are you stating this?

    • +4

      You're not the only one.

No wonder it's on clearance, 99% of the population probably didn't know they had networking gear either haha

      • its also not NBN ready with only 4 x 10/100 and 1 x rj11 so I guess that it has a lifespan of say maybe 18 months if you believe NBN rollout plans?

        • Who cares. Always good to set up as a separate router for the kids

        • +4

if it does 100m that’s better than what some people get on nbn download wise so this is probabaly not the bottleneck.

        • Edit: nevermind

        • There will be a lot of obsolete gear as the NBN rolls out. Next time I go travelling, I might donate my old ADSL router to someone in another country - e.g. Argentina, which has Australian power points.

I wonder if this router supports WDS Wireless Bridge, which in theory can extend the range of the wifi signal.

        • @pcox:

I wonder if this router supports WDS Wireless Bridge, which in theory can extend the range of the wifi signal.

It does. But you don't need WDS to be able to extend the wifi range.

I tried WDS with my Archer D7 and the TL-WA801ND and it severely lagged my browsing speeds. However, universal repeater works fine :/ Figures cos WDS is meant to be "smoother".

        • "….if you believe NBN rollout plans?"

Ha ha ha. Tee hee hee. NBN = Networking by Numbskulls. It is so 90s. Still a good router has many functions; especially if it has dual band. Not sure if this one does.

        • The rollout of the nbn™ is being planned in this area.
          Planned availability: Jan-Jun 2019*

HaHa. I'm not holding my breath.

        • @CVonC:

WDS is meant to be "smoother".

WDS is a infrastructure networking function, for bridging Access Points (and, optionally repeat). Wireless extender is a method for an Access Point to fake itself as a client and then repeat.

whats the pt of this? does it even do torrents bro?

    • -2

Yes, it does. Just put it out when there's flash flooding and you'll get plenty of torrents.

    • Probably more than adequate for dialup torrents.

    • Yo bro, Torrents no problem bro. At least until government locks the few remaining pages bro. Yo

what's the maximum connections? 10 for this cheapo?

      • Nope, they can't win. there will always be a workaround.

        • -1

They have won long time ago. I know that there are ways and workarounds but unfortunately this is a lost battle.

        • @dosada:

At least the war is still on :)

        • @dosada:

          Lol no.

Never had good experience with these cheap modem routers. I recommend buying second hand Netgear AC1200 modem routers $30 from eBay.

    • +4

I wouldn’t recommend a cheap one either. Just pay more, have some future proofing, and save hours of hassle.

But if you have to buy cheap, you can do worse than TP-Link. Their products are generally good value for money and pretty solid.

    • +1

it’s cheap now but cost $120 when it first came out ….. and tp link have recovered all their development and production line setup costs, so the $30 price doesn’t reflect the quality, just that demand is down and kmart are dumping them.

i have one of these as a spare as i upgraded to a vr600, and know people still using them.

    • TP Link in particular has a bad rep. Every bit of TP Link gear I've ever tried has been a POS.

      • +6

Opposite feeling here, I use TP-Link Powerline gear to a remote shed, TP-Link wifi dongles and TP_Link IP cameras. Never had a problem with any of it over many years. I Live in a rural area so the power is a bit dodgy at times which has resulted in various things blowing up over the years. The TP-Link gear has proven remarkably resilient when compared with my other gear.

        • I had only considered the routers / modems etc that I'd used over the years, but you raise a good point about their EoP gear. I'm actually using it as well, and it's been so stable, I forgot I actually had it there.

        • I have two TPlink modem routers and couple of wifi dongles, no issue here.

  • What are the T&C's to this offer bonky? I'm sure that you read them?

    • T&C are get in qucik!

      • Where is qucik?

  • Which hardware version is it? Must have some pretty solid firmware to go 3+ years without an update and still be secure.

  • I had this modem for a few years, it's a solid performer. However the number of devices in the household streaming youtube became a bit too much for it so I had to upgrade. I chose another TP link modem as I had no issues.

    • I had one of these too, until I went to NBN. It is now currently in use at my parents' doing ADSL duty. Pretty solid, didn't play up much.

  • +2

This is actually my modem router! I recently used it as my wifi router as well as ADSL modem until recently. I moved into a larger apartment complex and it couldn't cope with all the other wifi around. I ended up buying a Google Wifi and now use this modem router on modem mode only. Other than that, does the job for not much money.

And unfortunately, no Officeworks price beat available because it's a clearance product. :(

  • would this be suitable to use for my security cameras at home. wanting to connect Wi-Fi Wi-Fi from my wifi cable modem to this router and then to the cameras.

  • Probably clearing it as as it's a really old model modem. It's only ADSL2+ and of course it is useless if you're going to be on FTTN. Which is probably the reason it's being cleared out so cheap.

Got the last one at Sunnybank, Thanks bonky.

    • +1

Didn't realise you were a fellow sunnybanker too.

      Sunnybank ftw!

      • +1

I'll make a note to avoid Sunnybank in future - too much competition for bargains. :)

        • Haha tbh it's the last place I'd go, it's an effing nightmare parking there! By the time I've parked at KFC and walked across the bridge to kmart someone would've snapped it up lol

        • +1

@montorola: But at least you can enjoy 9 pieces of chicken on a Tuesday.

  • Got one of these for work (we have to provide our own router) and have never managed to get it working……even after a dozen emails to their product support team.

    • Not sure what were you trying to do there, router setup is pretty much fool proof.

      • I agree. Most routers used here are just plug in the cable and you’re away. This one hasn’t been very unforgiving and I’ve since given up. It’s currently in the top of the wardrobe.

  • Can this be used with HFC NBN?

    • Normally, you would connect NBN's NTD into the WAN port of a router. This doesn't have a WAN port but I'm not sure if you can still connect to the LAN ports.

  • These are a pain. I had one for 12 months and had nothing but issues. Bought a more expensive modem router and haven't had an issue since.

  • would this be good if used as a modem only bridged to a router?

  • I've used this modem with good success for FTTN NBN.

NVM, i thought this was the VDSL model.

  • I wonder if i can make a modem router → router?

Because if i can, i can get a cheap modem router to work as a router + wifi in my house, rather than spending a lot more on range extender. But i guess i will need to run a long cable from one modem router to another one.

I know someone is still using this setup, who says cheap modems aren't good :)

      Yes you can

You can set this up as a WDS repeater or Universal repeater.
