I've got the Xp version…sure it's not "n" wireless like mine?
    Ripper machine

  • just ordered one for the oldies. they were looking for a acer aspire and looking at paying around 300-400.

229.90 delivered to NT sounds good to me :)

    thx for heads up op

  • +1

Just for your information. The LCD screen on this netbook is rather poor. The screen mask colour is black. It can be annoying when you look at the LCD screen up close. You can see the black grids.

    Wireless N is wireless N 150 (1T1R) not the standard 2T2R wireless N 300.

However, for this price, cannot really expect too much. Good price because you don't need to do the annoying cashback anymore.

    • +1

Very true regarding the LCD, but you get used to it. The gf hasn't complained, so I'm happy.

  • I have the xp version as well. Nice small machine, quiet and all. Bought it 4 months back from earlier deal with cashback, close to this price. Wireless g in mine.

  • I have had my machine now for about 8 months and I love it. I have put Windows 7 32 bit ultimate on it, and it runs like a dream. Great little machine. Great first post!! Sharon

  • I am typing this from my em350 netbook now which runs xp definitely no regrets here great machine for the price!

  • Tossing up whether to buy one probably would be useful for final year of uni next semester….or possibly a nice present for the parents too. Decisions Decisions!!!

  • What is Windows 7 Starter like? Usable?

    • Yeah it's useable. They cripple things like being able to change the desktop background and screensaver with ease. though, there's a will there's a way, but I haven't let it bother me.

      • I think ASUS includes an app with their eee PC's (at least did on 1005P's & maybe 1005HA) that lets you change the background… even run a slideshow, I think).

BTW, a friend just bought paid $240 (after negotiating the sales rep down) for an ASUS eee PC 1001 PX (2-cell battery, no Bluetooth, just 1 3.5" audio jack, non-glossy clamshell exterior, etc.) WITH A BIG SCRATCH on the top.

The rep told her that a LOT of scratched units were coming through, so they actually had to open the boxes before selling them…

now, the friend had to drive from one Dick Smith store to this one - and they never mentioned any scratch… - so, she was able to get the price down from (End-of-Year Sale $269 or near) to $240 -PLUS- got a Logitech M100 mouse thrown-into package, at no cost).

PS That reminds me: Another friend was offered a -Repaired- ASUS eee PC 1005P (the box even included the repair-sheet, dated 5-6 months earlier!) as if new, when she asked for one at the (then) sale price of $349.00 (The sale ad made no mention of "factory repaired" etc.)

        (I saw the computer & the repair-slip first-hand.)

No discount for her, though… take the Repaired one -or- No Deal! It ran, but had signs of previous usage, before

Is THAT Kosher in South AU's Retail Legislation? AU's…? (Anyone know?)

(In fairness to Dick Smith, they give you a 7 or 14 day no-Q's-asked return right; with full cash back… they also pass through a fresh 12-month warranty period… or say they do… she hasn't checked to see if the prev repaid has cost her any warranty period…)

    • +1

      bleh, double

    • +1

Yeah, Win7 Starter is fine. There is a small french program that allows you to set the windows background, screensaver, etc - works great!!

      http://renaudgerson.fr/StarterBackgroundChanger/?utm_source=…

Find the English Flag icon at the right, then it's understandable :-)

  • Jus curious… Why isn't the cashback required on this… Has the scheme expired ???

I actually got one 3 days back for 243 and wondering what to do… Do officeworks have Price gurantee thingy ???

  • Hey I think the eMachines cashback still applies even on this model [$39] which effectively brings the total price down to $160! Any care to confirm model no. to make sure?

  • +6

I bought one of these at officeworks christmnas eve for $243 with $39 cash back - damn paid $5 too much.

interestingly the OW person said that she had spoken to emachines staff who said only about 15% of customers were redeeming the $39.

I sent my cash redemption thing off on boxing day as you only have 14 days to claim it. the redemption goes until feb 11 or something similar but only for certain product numbers. you need to check the model number against the page on the emachines site.

My machine has windows 7 and seems fine. I am Mac person.

I bought it to turn into a hackintosh though with the 3150 GPU this may be an issue.

I'm using it now. the trackpad takes a little to get used to though I could just plug in a mouse.

set it up to my home wireless with no trouble.

I'm very happy with this machine.

I plugged it in to my 32" TV to watch a movie last night and it was good. (though you would need some external amplifying speakers as the vga cable only takes picture not audio -obviously - and I think the movie sound track was very feight.

I'll be using mine for uni (along side my G5 Imac) and when I'm on the go.

      • -1

        double

      • +12

wait, I hadn't added the bit where some knob posts a dumb response to my post.

      • -2

So then why did you keep reading and then bother to reply?

    • +1

      re the cash back

That's the whole strategy behind cash backs, they hope people forget to redeem it. So they get the effect of lowering the price but not actually paying for it.

    • Have you turned the eM350 into a Hackintosh?

I recently installed MacOS on my Acer Aspire One. Not everything works, such as networking (had to buy a Netgear WG111v3 USB stick) and external monitor (corrupted display). If you can get setup instructions specific to the eM350 it may be worth trying.

      • no EM350 hackingtosh yet, I'm going to buy a second one to turn into a hacintosh and keep this one until the hacintosh is up and running. then sell this one. I need a functional computer for now.

I saw a website somewhere that had instructions for a n450 + 3150gpu hackintosh but can't for the life of me find it again. though i haven't searched much.

  • Seems the item is on backorder & cant be added to cart….

    • Sold Out Online :(

      • +1

…but available in store. It is in the lastest catalogue (Back-2-School), on front page.

In store the display isn't marked as special, just normal price. Doesn't exactly catch your eye as a Crazy Sale price.

  • Just got one instore at Osborne Park, WA. Didnt seem to be stock issues yet.

  • Just bought one from Vic park store. 10 more left in WA.

  • Spoke with local store in SA. They are out of stock but expect delivery mid next week. Just a matter of going in the store, pre-paying, and picking up when stock comes in.

  • +2

Using an eM350 from the last sale from HN, very handy little machine with vanilla ubuntu, dont bother trying ubuntu "netbook edition" though, virtually unusable.

Nice to hear this kind of hardware is becoming cheaper, with less hitches like the cashback from the first time around.

  • Just went through full check out process and it works. Must have added new stock online.

  • so has anyone confirmed or denied that the $39 redemption still applies? might be worth getting another one if they are only $160 after cash back

    • +1

      Redemption should still apply:
      eMachines eM350-21G16ikk $39 Cash Back (E103), 07 Dec 2010 to 28 Feb 2011, SKU: LU.NAH0D.140
      eMachines eM350-21G16ikk $39 Cashback (E102), 25 Nov 2010 to 28 Feb 2011, SKU: EM.M3701.350FE

Got one of these before Christmas. Nice little machine.
WIndow 7 Starter is not bad at all, does what netbook intends to do.

  • Not sold out still available online and in store

    • Just ordered online now also.

      • Just tried again, but 0 stock available.

        • +2

          Working now.

      • me too, ordered one + free postage, great!

  • +2

can someone post back on how they go setting up a hackintosh for this comp thanks

  • Went to Clayton store [VIC] - only display model available which was at the same price. 2 in Richmond, a few on Elizabeth St store, Ringwood and Mornington. There were a few other stores but I can't remember, of these stores they had 2-5.

  • Anyone know how the battery life are on these? How long in hours, average?

  • Just got off the phone to OW Morley. They said they haven't got stock yet but expect some in next week at the $199 price. They couldn't discuss anything about the cashback. If cashback applies that will be a great deal. The Acer cashback pages don't seem to be loading still.

Do these 3 cell batteries last about 2 hours under normal use?

  • Fremantle had run out with restock expected next week (Qty 35) at the same price, but were taking rainchecks.

The one I got from Osborne Park store for $199 has the P/N including NAH0D.140 which was listed on the emachine website yesterday as eligible for the $39 rebate.

I thought I would get one today, just in case the restocks have some other P/N that is not eligible for the rebate.

The 3 cell battery has already lasted 2H, and the battery indicator says there is another 3H left.

  • Is there an extended warranty option when buying online?

    • When claiming the cashback you can swap your cash back for an extra year, providing a 2-year warranty.

  • Hi all, can the ram be increased to 2GB, by replacing the existing 1GB with a 2GB chip?

    • +1

Sure can :) just get a DDR2 SODIMM stick

  • Bought the Windows XP one a few months back when there was the $39 cash back on $237. It's a pretty awesome laptop and in fact I am posting using it now. Took it overseas and it worked like a charm.

In terms of battery life I forked out an additional $50 and bought a 6 cell battery from ebay which last 4 hours of reasonably intensive use (watching videos and surfing the net). The standard 3 cell would be about 2 hours of reasonably intensive use but I definitely recommend getting a 6 cell from ebay. Battery life is probably the only downside to this device. If you are word processing only you should get more out of your battery.

Personally didn't think extended warranty was worth it for around $30 (I think) because in a year this laptop will be completely outdated. If it lasts me a year it would have already been well worth it.

Great little laptop, excellent for travel. After coming back from overseas I have still continued to use this laptop instead of my 16inch full size laptop I bought Jan last year.

  • In the ads column of this page, an Android tablet PC was being spruked for $169 (possbily 7" screen & slow); they have faster ones, with 10.x" screens, eg, here:

Has anyone dealt with these guys? Tried their tablets? etc.

    Anything to write home about?

  • For those who upgrade Win 7, RAM & add an ext. optical drive…

    maybe the eMACHINES eME527 15.6" Notebook ACEM527312 ($399 at O'works) is a better price-performance deal…

if only because it has Win 7 Home Premium (way too costly by itself IMO).

See my old thread for redemption info, links and part numbers (P/N on label but they call it SKU)

    OLD THREAD = http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/35685

    REDEEMABLE P/N LIST IS HERE = http://redemption.emachines.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashB…

    CASHBACK REGISTER PAGE = http://redemption.emachines.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashB…

Note that the eMachines redemption pages seem to be completely dead as I post this (so keep trying). From my (Christmas alcohol damaged) memory the only P/N (SKU) that hasn't expired is LU.NAH0D.140

Officeworks don't know anything about the Cashback thing (I assume that they are not officially involved). But if you get the correct PartNumber (P/N on side label of carton) then the Redemption works just fine. Mine is being processed, due soon - BTW they are good at keeping you updated with status.

Finally, here is a picture of the carton label that you must check in-store…

MAKE SURE YOU GET THIS P/N = http://i53.tinypic.com/audykn.jpg

    • seems like any of three P/N for eM359 would be OK for cashback.

      eMachines eM350-21G16ikk $39 Cash Back (E103)
      07 Dec 2010 - 28 Feb 2011
      LU.NAH0D.140

      eMachines eM350-21G16ikk $39 Cashback (E102)
      25 Nov 2010 - 28 Feb 2011
      EM.M3701.350FE

      eMachines eM350-21G16i $39 Cashback (E53)
      20 May 2010 - 31 Jan 2011
      LU.NAH0B.050

remains to be seen what the backordered units will be, or the online either. Most probable same as pictured above.

  • has anyone been successful in puttin MAC OSX on this laptop?

  • I picked one up yesterday from Osborne Park.

Haven't opened it just yet, still wondering if I'm going to use it enough!

Although the real cost to me was only $60 out of pocket - $199, $39 cashback makes it $160, and I had a $100 gift card. Thanks :)

  • +1

none in stock in any brisbane stores, but they are receiving stock this week at $199.

  • Other half got one of these for Xmas from the last offer. Installed Jolicloud on it, which is a really minimal Ubuntu install with the Chrome browser and not a lot more. Excellent device for this price, and it means I got my own netbook back at last!

  • This deal is on the front page of their back to school catalogue and somewhere near the back they have the new flash looking Acers with the newer dual core processors for $399.

You might want to amend the title to not say expired.

  • the redemption page is working again

can someone please confirm if it has cashback ?

  • Put two claims through 10 minutes ago as long as LU.NAH0D.140 should be ok

  • Yup…Just put through a claim..as easy as abc

  • Don't know if posted but this is the stock standard price now. Went to 2 places in the Brisbane region and they were out more stock on the 4th. Both sales people confirmed that they will be this price for good at $199.

    • Which OW did u went? I guess the cashback makes it a better deal.. Just wondering are there Ny othet retailers selling the same model to do price match? I tried to search for reviews but not much reviews done for this particular laptop..

      • Adelaide Street OW and Morayfield OW.

  • Confirmed that more will be in stock at Office Works on the 4th.
Paid for 1 and will be picking it up on Tuesday.

  • Just rang up OW alexandria and they dont even stock that model becos they sold too many of them last time they were on sale.. the person said more stock will be coming in on tuesday in other stores.. are you able to ring up and hold one or do you have to go in person in store to buy it?

    • You can call up have them reserve you one. Put your name down and go in on the day to pick up and pay :)

  • Just paid in advance for 1 @Airport West branch. The staff confirmed that more stock will be arrived tomorrow based on the record showing when he scanned the barcode. Hope that it comes with the serial number that able to claim the cashback.

  • I already bought three of these for immediate family, and another auntie wanted one when she saw mine on the weekend. I went to buy her one today. Bondi Junction Officeworks said none had arrived yet, they are expecting them on Thursday so I paid for it and they'll contact me when it arrives. I considered going to HN and trying to price match with the OW receipt then cancelling the OW order, but feeling too lazy today.

  • did anyone find stock today?

    • nah bro public holiday all closed.

      • No mate, Adelaide stores were opened but sold out, getting more stock due Wednesday or Thursday. Rang Gilles Plains and Trinity Garden stores.

Will not hold for you unless you come in and make a payment which is understandable since they are only getting about 9 units in each.

  • Has anyone been able to buy one anywhere today?

  • Just called OW Prahran, they told me all OW in VIC sold out, and expecting to get more today.

  • Called around and managed to get one at f-gate ow. Guy said it was last one for backorder, expects order today or tommorow. Still looking for another one though, should be great for overseas travel.

  • does anyone know if they sell these at jb hifi and if they will price match

  • Just bought one at OW @ Woolongabba QLD, expected to come today but they haven't arrived so i ordered one for backorder, they will call me when it arrives
    ;)
    thanks alot OP

  • They didn't have any units left in Narre Warren store ( and all of VIC as per the salesman). Bought one through customer ordering and wouln't be getting till mid next week. Apparently officeworks has ordered 3000 units from Acer. So anyone who is really after one could place a customer order and get it mid next week.

  • Did anyone get a pre-paid unit today?
I paid for one on Sunday with word that they would be restocked on the 4th but I got no call today :(
    Hopefully tomorrow.

    • i prepaid one unit today, guy told me that they were meant to come today but it came late, hopefully it comes tomorrow at minimum(QLD STORE: woolongabba) but he will call me when it arrives,
i'm in no rush so i don't really mine but hopefully before rebate date

    • I purchased online on 31Dec, got a call today from the store I requested pickup from at about 1pm today, and picked it up at 3pm. Nice service from Officeworks. Store was 538 Collins St Melbourne. Looks like a nice little machine. Thanks Poster.

      • yep just got a call today saying it arrived, again thanks OP

  • Anyone looking to make a profit
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Acer-eMachine-EM350-10-inch-LED-Netbo…
One was sold on 29-Oct-10 for $306 with $16 shipping

  • Hmm, I just called officeworks trinity gardens (SA) and the guy I spoke to said stock wasn't coming till next week. He said that the stock had arrived in Australia and would now be distributed to stores around AUS. Anyone know any different?

  • Since people are still posting here… how good are the laptops compared to older 2nd-hand Pentium-M laptops?

For example, I recently won an old Pentium laptop off ebay for $85… with no hard drive or AC adapter. At the end of it, I would have spent $200 all up (CPU upgrade, RAM upgrade, new hard drive, AC adapter) - ending up as a Pentium-M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 160Gb HD, new CMOS BIOS battery… with inbuilt Intel graphics, wireless G, bluetooth, SD card reader and a 15" 1024x768 screen, running Windows XP Pro SP3.

For that price I could have just bought one of these… but how would the Atom N450 1.6Ghz compare to a Pentium-M 1.6Ghz?

EDIT - On second thought, I think I prefer the Pentium-M's 15" screen, it's not meant to be ultra-portable, it's meant for the kids to play flash games on (ABC's website etc).

    • battery life, battery life, battery life.

    • The Atom N450 is hyperthreaded. From what I can see, a Pentium-M isn't. Hyperthreading gives a fairly significant performance boost, especially for running a few programs at once.

  • Anyone wanting to hackintosh this thing…

I would look at the following blog: http://www.meklort.com/

In particular - follow the progress of the GMA3150 patch.

Currently it doesn't support QE yet (quartz encryption) - meaning you are not going to get any of the fancy visual effects when running OSX. Once QE support is added (hopefully soon) - this netbook should work great as a hackintosh.

  • just got on from the collin st store in melbourne, its only one per customer.

    • just bring family members or friends if you want more or go the next day

  • Its been removed on their website….guess its only an instore offer now due to the demand.

  • Just bought one from the Auburn store in Sydney. They told me they just got a shipment today! And the one I got is eligible for the $39 cashback

  • hmmm how come people are getting there's now…maybe the guy at my officeworks doesn't know what he's talking about?

  • i called officeworks auburn and wenworthville with no luck, the guy said they recived 15 units today and soldout in 1 hour. he also said all stores in the area are sold out aswell…
