absl 2 upgrade

[X]

Hi guys,

I need some help and thought someone here could help me. Not really bargain related but I am throwing money at dick smith/Tandy so you could help me save!

I recently upgraded my Broadband to adsl2 and now my phone line is awfully staticy. I thought I needed a new filter dongle thing and got two new ones for adsl2, one for the kitchen and one for the study (where the modem is). The one for the kitchen didn’t fit but the one for the study was ok.

The phone line didn’t improve. I know it is the adsl effecting the phone line because if I disconnect the modem the phone is clear.

What do I need to buy to fix this problem? Do I need to upgrade to an adsl2 modem? Does the kitchen need an adsl2 filter even though the modem is not plugged in there?

Any help is appreciated.

I’m not an expert at this but I don’t think the kitchen needs a filter. It could be the modem but I’m not 100% sure either. Have you tried calling customer support? If your broadband line and phone line are with the same company, they might be able to send someone down to fix the problem, otherwise they might have some idea on what to do.

yes, I called customer support and got the run around and was eventually told to buy a new filter…not much help provided.

You need a filter for EVERY phone in the house. You don’t need a new modem for the reason of static on the line but if you don’t already have an ADSL2 compatible modem then it would be benefitial speed wise to get one.

Make sure the line to your ADSL modem/router is NOT filtered, only phones, fax machines etc get filtered. If you can hear the DSL on your phone then your filter is either not working or incorrectly installed.

thanks neil. I’ll go and buy that filter and see how I go.

The filter’s usually have a socket for modem and a socket for phone. I need to use a phone on the same wall socket as the modem so I am guessing that the modem socket in the filter would be filter free….right? Or do I need to plug the modem directly into the wall socket?

Yeah, most filters have a socket for modem and one for phone. Modem being unfiltered.

So did you have ADSL before you upgraded? Have you tried an isolation test such as disconnect everything from all phone sockets, only have phone and modem plugged in kitchen (with the filters)? At least you can isolate which filter isn’t working.

yes I had adsl before I upgraded. I removed all wall sockets except the one with the filter with the phone and modem and there was static. I plugged the modem into the wall directly and put the phone and filter in another wall socket and still got static. I also just checked my filter and it is the f2931 that the article recommends. I am not sure what to try next.

Very strange. If you had ADSL before and it worked, ADSL2 shouldn’t make any difference.

So the modem and phone(s) are the same as when you had ADSL?

[X]

yes they are the same. And I know adsl2 did it because I was at home on the net using dial-up (they gave me a temp account because my adsl wasn’t working while they did the change over) and I lost dial tone for 15 minutes and when it came back I had adsl again and the phone line was staticy.

My husband just reminded me that I have an antique phone on the wall that has a wall socket. Would I need a filter on this phone or is this only if I am going to use this particular phone? I have to unscrew the phone from the wall to make the change so only want to do it if I have to.

Well, every phone should have a filter on it if you plan to use it, but a phone with a filter on it shouldn’t have any “dsl noise”. I’m thinking this static is actually not DSL noise as the filter would have filtered it.

So just to confirm, modem not plugged in and no static? modem plugged in and static? In that case, perhaps change the phone cable thats plugged in to modem. Also is this a cordless or corded phone that you are experiencing this on?

Yeah, if you have tried all that then lodge a fault with your ISP or ask a question on Whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au.

Your ISP will ask you to do all of these things, perform an isolation test, change cables, filters etc. so its good to have done these prior to calling.

I think moving from ADSL to ADSL2 requires the other of copper wire to be physically unplugged from the old DSLAM to the new ADSL2 DSLAM if you are using an alternate provider (than Bigpond). Something might happen in between.

I am on Exetel ADSL2 with Optus DSLAM, and sometimes when they do work in my local exchange my phone also gets static. I think it might be a good idea to lodge a fault or something like that and get the broadband company to look at it.
