  • is the 1050ti a gaming option? I'd like something affordable for 1080p…..

      • 1060 review..
maybe should hold out for a 1070 desktop with similar specs

        • +2

          7000 = 1050 Ti
          7577 = 1060 max-Q

        • killer instinct fan, ps4 not an option

    • Mine does CSGO at mostly High settings - BF1 running at medium quality (with shadows and AA turned down)

  • Is it easy to add another SSD?
Is there another slot or Will I have to remove the current one?

    • +4

These laptops have 2 hard drive bays… 1 x 2.5" SATA and 1 x NVMe. In most models, both are already occupied, with the SSD in the NVMe slot. My advice would be to keep the stock SSD as a boot drive, and replace the mechanical HDD in the SATA slot with an extra SSD of your chosen capacity, since they're quite bit cheaper for large capacity drives.

      • +1

Mine has got only one 256gb ssd, so does that mean one slot is still available?

        • +3

Yes, I bought one of these last month with the 256GB ssd and it had a spare bay for a 2.5 laptop drive to which I added a samsung 860 ssd from the recent ebay sales.

        • @stinkychicken:
I have got Samsung 850 eco m.2 and Samsung 860 evo. Are the both suitable?

        • +1

@baldur: The 256GB ssd will already be occupying the M.2 slot. The spare bay supports a standard 2.5 inch laptop hard drive with sata power/data connections.

        • @stinkychicken:

would i need any spare parts (cables, brackets etc) to add this sata ssd?

  • How is the battery life on this when not gaming? My lenovo with a 1050ti is too short for my liking so thinking of changing it up.

    • Really good according to most reviews, plus a comment on here.

Is that possible to upgrade RAM to 16 or 32 GB?

    • +1

They only sell in 8GB and 16GB configurations, and in 3 or 4 'packages' so you can't fully customise your loadout (eg you can't buy the i5 model with 16GB)

But if you're happy to do the work yourself (and it's very easy, so why not?) you can upgrade from 8GB to 16GB by adding another 8GB RAM stick in the spare slot.

If you want 32GB, you'd have to remove the 8GB stick and add 2 x 16GB sticks.

    • +1

I bought one of these last month and it came with a single 8GB stick and a second slot to add another one. I then bought a Crucial 8GB DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) CL17 SR x8 Unbuffered SODIMM 260pin stick as it has the same timings as the dell ram that was already installed.

        • I bought it from umart (https://www.umart.com.au/Crucial-8GB-DDR4-2400-MT-s--PC4-192…) but it appears to be the same part number.

        • I got this deal last month for $936 and ordered an 8gb crucial ddr4 2400 stick from Computer Alliance - it wouldn't boot with it in so I returned it.

I ended up getting the exact model number that it came with a Hynix 8GB DDR4 SODIMM PC4-2400T(HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH)and it works fine.

        • @iratepirate: I picked mine up during the same sale but haven't had any issue with the linked ram. I agree that it would be better to go with the same brand though as it's less likely then that there will be any issues.

        • if 7700hq is worth the 200 , then the 320 definitely a go for 16gb + 1TB HDD

as below 8gb ddr4 sodimm costs $110 alone

gaming and laptop … two words that should never be combined

    • +3

I guess it depends what you care about most. You'll never beat a desktop in performance/price, but laptops have come a long way in the past few years and any casual player can easily get 90% of the thrills on a decent laptop.

    • +3

Professional gamers travel to venues with gaming laptops to compete.

    • Macbook and gaming are words that shouldn't be combined, nothing wrong with a "gaming" laptop.

I’m after something for my daughter studying in graphics and I wanted to confirm would this be suitable

    • +1

Go for it. I've used the previous model for 2D and 3D modelling in various CAD programs (AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, Solidworks) and it runs very nicely.

I wouldn't use it for hardcore professional CAD work (not enough RAM or CPU speed) but it's absolutely fine for students and casual workloads.

  • It's a good quality laptop - i've got one

  • Hey guys, I do a lot of photo editing with occasional video editing too, is this screen fit for this purpose? The last thing I want is to edit the picture to find it looks way brighter and colours coming up as way more saturated on a phone/print - this happens currently with me on my 8 year old Dell laptop lol

    • +3

Not great - it's a low-end IPS panel. Check the "Update: Full-HD IPS-Display" section of the review here. Plenty of measurements, 61.4% sRGB coverage.

      • Thanks mate, is there a particular make/model of laptop that should be on my watch list given my editing requirements? Budget max 1500

        • There isn't really much (or anything?) under $1500 that offers this kind of performance (CPU and GPU) alongside a nice screen. If you're not going to be using it on the go all the time for editing, you could pick up a nice IPS monitor like this.

        • 1500 a lil tight

go surface book 1st gen with performance base gt965m

previously posted here for around 1500+ when on sale at ebay

    • In what combination could this be used?

      • Can't combine. Can't be used on eBay.

    • Code doesn't work.

      • +1

Only useable on dell site. Also it's a unique code useable only once. Someone probably used it already.

  • any good good recommendations for 2 in 1 deal?
also whats the difference between Dell Inspiron 13, 15, and 17 model?

    • +5

      13 inch
      15 inch
      17 inch

      • ah thanks for that
        what about 3000, 5000, 7000?

        • family model

for the differences, you can compare yourself

        • sillycow!

  • Are these available in 8th Gen processors? I know it has been mentioned that the graphics is worse.

    • +1

There were available initially but been replaced by the Dell G5 series of gaming laptops - 8th gen with 1060maxQ
Externally and internally both are identical except for the badges

  • Sorry for noob question. Is this powerful enough to do 3D work and autocad. Eyeing 16gb one. Thanks

    • +1

      yes no problem

    • only if you need that 6 cores for cpu intensive tasks

else if gaming , for that price you can get gtx 1060

      • Nah, not gaming but design work so 3D rendering, Autocad, photoshop and Sketch (which my wife said very resource hungry). Thanks

      • Any advice for a laptop with gtx 1060 . ? Thanks

        • dell usually have 1060 max-Q on this model with same config as this deal for 1,349 during their usual ebay 20% off sale
but not in this one, so you might want to wait for the next ebay 20%

else if you can't wait then go for below, (note max-Q is cutdown/laptop version, so the one below is much more powerful together with 8th gen 6c/12t cpu)

        • @phunkydude: Thanks very much for your suggestion. Never heard Metabox but it's a good brand? Thanks

        • @andri77:

they are famous local custom laptop builder based in Perth

          search whirlpool for their reviews

        • @phunkydude: Thanks mate, appreciate it

        • @phunkydude: BTW, Metabox is better than Gigaybyte or MSI? Around same price. Thanks

  • +1

Looks like beast to carry around

    • Heavy 2.5kg and could not fit into normal sized backpacks

  • I have an older version (I think) 7566 with an i7-6700HQ, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD and 1TBHDD - more inline with the +$320 version. I purchased it for "work" - developing apps, etc but to have some downtime and play games as well. Its a good PC, but I feel it struggles a bit when there is a lot going on (maybe if it was just one game and nothing else, it would be fine).

Some cons though - it is HEAVY… between that and the power brick, it's about 3KG - wouldn't recommend it if you are travelling regularly. I also found the 128SSD a bit small. The System and Reserved seems to always get around 50GB and if you are using it for other things (like visual studio that seems to hate storing SDKs on a secondary drive) then it doesnt leave much room for games.

That said, Fallout 4 plays well on it. Haven't tried any newer, resource intensive games but seems to handle them alright.

Anyway, long story short, I'd recommend opting in for the extra ram and second drive.

  • is this laptop compatible with M.2 NVMe SSD? (970 EVO 250GB)

    • +1

yes, but the ssd that came with it already occupying the only m.2 slot it has

so unless you're swapping out the m.2 ssd , else there is spare room for adding in 2.5" ssd instead

    • try drop-shipping

      • any good 1070 deals? laptop or desktop.. anything for full settings @ 1080p
