Why arent there any m.2 sata deals? All i want is a m.2 sata 1tb for near $200.

    • -2

What's the point of M.2 if it ain't NVME? it costs more and the only thing you'll really get is no cables.

      • +2

It'll fit in laptops that use m.2 form factor is one point, but certainly if there was an option for NVME instead you'd take that.

        • +6

Ahhh I completely forgot laptops existed for a second there, my bad.
Yeh I completely understand. I use a 5 year old bulky heavy old giant so I don't have that problem myself which is why I may have forgot :p

      • +3

Laptops, NUCs, NAS cache or in my case, SFFPC

      • Mostly just the much smaller form factor (some laptops now only have M.2 slots or you want the only 2.5" spot for another drive, or to save spots for bigger hard drives in a desktop), and neater/quicker install (no data cable to buy or hunt down, one less power cable to plug into a modular PSU etc).

Sure there is usually 0 speed benefit going from the same model of SATA SSD in 2.5" vs M.2. But some of us have spare M.2 slots and would like a value SATA SSD with good capacity to fill that spot. I myself am a little confused as to why all these deals are only 2.5"…if anything the M.2 drive would cost less to manufacture and ship!

Personally I have a spare M.2 slot in my main PC and would love a good value 1TB+ SATA SSD to fill it rather than mucking around with adding another SATA data/power cable to my neat build. Doesn't need to be a super fast NVMe drive as it will just be used for general downloads/storage and for games, my main OS drive is already a 960 Pro and I am looking to stop thrashing it with writes due to downloads.

    • I just got a m.2 samsung 860 1tb and 500gb 970evo for $170ea after selling both Assassin's Creed codes (and stacking with the 5% off and 10% off gift cards)

      • is there a way to safely sell those codes? i always had the impression it is really easy to get screwed over selling codes online

  • Would buy 1TB immediately if Techmall was part of the Samsung Assassins Creed redemption :(

    hmmm do i need this

    • +1

      Yes

  • Generally speaking SSD's will last a long ass time as a backup drive with minimal reading/writing yes? I understand that if they fail they'll lose everything rather than sectors, but at this price an SSD backup drive for my digital essentials is very tempting.

    • +2

Yeah, there's always a chance they can fail for a reason apart from write endurance but they should be able to do hundreds of TB writes without any issues.

I understand that if they fail they'll lose everything rather than sectors

Generally speaking, it's all or nothing whenever any PC component fails.

Bad sectors on a HDD has always been a prelude to the entire drive becoming bricked in my experience. I haven't ever come across a HDD that developed some bad sectors and simply stopped at that.

SSDs are orders of magnitude more reliable than HDDs and have endurance ratings that no ordinary consumer can realistically exceed, even years past their warranty period.

Generally speaking SSD's will last a long ass time as a backup drive with minimal reading/writing yes?

Even with extremely heavy usage, you need to write more than 700TB of data to a modern SSD to get it to fail. Let that number sink in for a bit.

      • +1

Yeah I've experienced a couple of platter disks though that have been nice enough to half-fail to the point where at least some stuff can at least be recovered. I have no experience with failed SSDs when it comes to long term reliability. My oldest SSD is probably only 5 years? But have had zero issues across multiple platforms and brands which I guess that in itself is almost enough anecdotal proof they seem to do a pretty good job…

  • thank you !

been waiting for the next SSD deal - just bought 500GB

What's a good external USB-C enclosure to put this in? Need it to be 100% reliable of course, don't mind paying a little extra. Also what is the practical difference for external SSD housings between USB 3.0 and 3.1? cheers!

    • Officially there is no such thing as USB 3.0 as it was renamed to USB 3.1 Gen 1 with a maximum speed of 5GB/s. USB 3.1 Gen 2 has a maximum of 10GB/s.

  • Thanks. Got 500gb to replace a 120gb… That one can go in a laptop to breath new life in it.

    108 for a 500gb evo. I paid 105 for a 250gb crucial 2 months ago.

  • +1

    75 bucks at MSY for 250gb 👍

  • Can someone help me out please.. I have a mac with a 500GB HDD. Can i close it onto a 1TB SSD no dramas? or should i go 500 -> 500?

Google only tells me about cloning from 1TB HDD to 500GB SSDs. I'm a bit more behind the times.

    TIA…

    • No drama cloning onto a larger drive.

      • Killer, thank you!

  • This is a really good deal if you ask me, especially for a samsung. Would definitely get the 1tb if I had the money right now but I'm a poor uni student.

Gonna get one. Any recommendations on an external enclosure?

Edit: went with this cause it was cheap https://www.amazon.com.au/Genuine-ORICO-Transparent-Drive-En…

Shipping seems a bit long though.
