Generally, if it is 2.5, the manufacturer will call it portable drive. As it says external drive - i will assume it is 3.5

  • the foto is of the 3.5 inch version

  • Looks the same as http://www.medion.com/gb/electronics/prod/MEDION%C2%AE+HDDri…

So I would say it is a 3.5"

  • +11

It's not hard to see the AC adapter socket on it

hang on… 2.5 vs 3.5 tells you whether u want to carry a brick or not.. and it does make a lot difference…

if u take tht brick and hit to your convertible or turbo.. it will make a huge damage… but 2.5 thingy will make less damage then compared to 2.5.

      2.5 is little less violent.

    • +6

yeah but then if it was only available in pink with orange stripes a lot less people would think it was a good deal.
The point is the OP doesn't know which it is and people want to know as that can make ALL the difference as to whether it's a good deal or not in their own opinion.
2.5 Vs 3.5 is an important point for HD's depending on what the prospective user wants it for.

      • -7

Yes, of course it is important. But there is absolutely no need to ask if this is a 2.5" or a 3.5" drive.

        • why? I'll admit it would PROBABLY be a 3.5 inch drive in the absence of other information in this ad and any other similarly spelled out ads but people wanting to know with 100% certainty would like a definitive answer, not rely on a "default" position ( of which they probably don't know or understand)and assume you only have to spell out anything that different.

If someone said they had a car for sale, the first question people ask is what sort it is, they wouldn't just assume it was the world's most popular model of car just because the seller didn't mention the type would they?

OK… no worries. I was honestly trying to help, not to flame anybody.

For the record, I wasn't actually referring to the thread - in the title here on OB it DEFINITELY should have mentioned whether it was 2.5" or 3.5". I absolutely agree that this thread should state what size drive it is.

My comments related to the OP's inability to determine if this deal is 3.5" or not, even after reading the Aldi advert page. I was giving people the "trick" to how to work it out. There are other things too… the power connector (mentioned by AntMan76) is another dead giveaway that it's not a 2.5".

          facepalm

    • 2.5" drives generally are no bigger than your standard wallet - hence the term portable or "pocket" drive. They require no external power (i.e. delivered entirely over USB).

3.5" drives generally do require a power source, and aren't very portable (more portable than your entire PC, but I'd err on the side of it being any more portable than a Laptop due to the fact you have to carry power cords, USB cords and the relatively heavy drive unit with you).

I agree though - the drive price is OK. Would have been a Super Bargain if it was 2.5" - but given they are still around ~$130 for Samsung / Toshiba USB 3.0, I think we have a while before the 1TB USB 3.0's hit that price. You'd be lucky to find 1TB USB 2.0 one's at that price! (2.5" that is).

    • So many negs means you made a sensible post.

      • -4

Yeah - I was actually trying to HELP people. Why get negged for helping?

People ALWAYS seems to ask if it's 2.5" or 3.5". I never have to ask, because I know. How do I know? … well, maybe next time I simply won't tell them.

        • +3

I gotta be honest here, your "helpful" post was more in the way of a rant about people asking a perfectly sensible question. Not everyone can tell the difference based on a small picture and although I agree (to a point) with "if they don't mention that they are, then THEY AREN'T!" this isn't always the case, it wouldn't be the first time the picture or description could be wrong or missing some details.

As proof of this go look at the recent HN thread for a 750 GB USB 3 2.5 drive. The picture in the catalogue and the model number they advertise don't match.

        • -1

But how can I know whether every drive here is a 2.5" or a 3.5" without having to ask? To me, it is so absolutely blatently obvious. So, I was posting assistance for others so that they could LEARN how to work it out for themselves.

It's similar to that old Chinese saying "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".

Maybe I just worded it badly?

        • -2

Nah, people just want you to eat the fish for them. It's easier than thinking.

      • what point are you trying to make out of his reply?
Are you trying to say that the default spec of a hard drive is USB2 and 3.5 inch and that it isn't required to be spelled out, but anything else that differs from this should be?

If that's the case, that's stupid as far as I am concerned.

If it was some other point we are all missing then please explain it to us.

        • -3

The point you are missing is that IF this was a 2.5" drive, or a 1.8" drive, or a SSD drive or a Firewire interface or an eSATA interface or had a stand or a fan or any other "feature"… then the advertisment would have said so.

Since it doesn't say it is any of those things, then it must be a 3.5" drive. In this case, with USB 3.0 interface.

    • +1

I agree with what you're saying, but also you're later statement about maybe trying to word it differently. Still it's better they ask than simply neg because they think a deal for a 2.5" is for a 3.5".

  • The best these drives can do is 120 MB/sec."

  • Should definitely wait for any fancy deal from OW. Expecting something better in Easter :)

  • Why bother with this when OW has 2TB 3.5" for $99: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/42655

    • +1

this one is usb 3.0, the OW one is usb 2.0

  • Isn't USB3 for SSD only? I mean USB2 can handle speeds of 60MB/s. I transfer movie files at about 20MB/s and other files at around 45MB/s which means that the hard drive is the limiting factor. From what they advertise USB3 is meant to do 600MB/s.

    • for the newer HDD the usb 2.0 interface is the bottleneck. I used to use esata to get around it, but now usb 3.0 is another viable option

  • +2

Nice spotting, though this one's cheaper, at $49.99:

    • Only for NSW/ACT of which I am not. :)

    • I lolled.

  • Has anyone seen the poster on the window though? I'm sure it said portable on the poster, because it made me do a double take and the "that's a good bargain nod"…

Don't mean to re-ignite though. Just what I saw. Cos we all know how important that is ;)
