[NSW] Jade Tiger Abalone 425g $20.80 @ Woolworths Liverpool

140

Hi all,

Saw this delicacy floating around my local Woolies. I personally couldn't justify buying it but some may find the need.

It was half price and is probably fairly expensive elsewhere as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There were about a dozen cans sitting there when I walked by. Link of sale sticker.

Happy hunting.

  • OP, how do you eat that?

You don't. Remove the clearance sticker, leave it in the can and then show off to your friends how high roller you are.

but to really answer your question, you'd probably attempt some kind of stir fry or soup with abalone. Google some recipes.

In fact, I may actually go back and buy a can to try out.

      • Or have a chest freezer full of that stuff and a garden walkway paved with abalone shells.

They grow almost literally near my doorstep. Too bad only 5/day on weekends.

    • you gently finger it , spread it open & rim it.

Just be careful, the open can has sharp edges

      • This thing does really look like it. Try with vegemite.

The real delicacy is with Chinese Oyster sauce based stews - but that takes HOURS literally to prepare and a bit of skill.

Easiest way to eat these is to use it with stir fry with veges.

Here's an easy recipe that doesnt take hours to prepare:

Ginger and Chinese cooking wine makes this dish great. The cooking wine isnt in the recipe, but I'd add it in for taste.

Thank you, I don't know whether is my thought or not, every time I walk by the Asian/Foreign food section at Coles or Woolies, it always seems to be a popular area for ppl to buy food.

        • Most of those are marketed at tourists because Abalone is a very popular Australian export considering there isn't much souvenirs to bring back to relatives overseas. I can almost guarantee that 75% of Chinese don't know how to cook Abalone properly at home themselves because it isn't an easy ingredient to make into something good. lol.
Although fresh (live, shucked) Abalone is great as sashimi..

          • @bchliu: The proper way to cook abalone is the old fashion way where they braise it for a few days using those pots

            • @Homr: Only if it is the dried ones. Fresh / Frozen / Canned does not require days to re-hydrate with chicken stock.

        Xie xie bchliu.

    • cook 2 packets of mi goreng, cut these shell fish into bite size, mix well and serve. i have also tried with instant noodles too (asian type), works well too. just don't consume liquid from the can.

    • Not sure of these canned ones, but for fresh abalones around this size, my [extended] family steam them inside the shells for 3m or so, put in sliced shallot and ginger, pour just a bit of hot oil over, drain (well, the shells have holes!) then serve with soy sauce hot-mixed with some oil.

Simple & delicious, much quicker than any method described apart from the sashimi.

  • Pour the juice/ sauce into your hotpot stock.
    Yummmo

    • It contains about 9-10 small size abalones.

Tetsuya’s simple recipe found in YouTube to cook abalone is really easy to try or eat it straight from the can like we eat oyster if you want. Nibble it, taste like cooked prawns/lobster.

      Or make fried rice/noodle/pasta.

  • It's also half price in my local woolie, probably nationwide.

I also saw frozen abalone on special $50 (was $60).

  • Why no Brisbane store stock them ??? :-(

I prefer the can abalone from Chinese shops. I think they retail for $30 and comes with one single large abalone in a delicious broth

  • Burning as we spent not far from a grand on these just last week.
