Dicksmith is an option aswell they matched the HN offer

  • do you have a direct link ???

  • does anyone know when must can be activated by ???

my current voda one runs out in October…

    • Doesn't say anything on the box about when you need to activate it by.

    • +1

Normally late 2012 or early 2013.. depends on which batch you get. So still plenty of time.

      • thanx….

      • -1

So, is the 2012 or 2013 marked on the box? (outside?)

        How do you know?

        • +1

Yes, it's on a label on the box.
Mine says Expiry Date: 20 Sep 2013

  • +1 a direct link?

  • +3

looking for a data sim to pop into my new PDA…looks like a winner & a free wifi dongle to flog off too.

    here's the AusPost link
    http://catalogue.auspost.com.au/portal/offerdetails/telstra_…

  • Worth it for the data alone. I bought one last time HN had it on sale at this price, kept the SIM and flogged the modem off on eBay for more than I paid for it. FREE DATA + PROFIT!!!

    • -3

who negged this??? what on earth is wrong with that? not like he brodened 50 of them. he just wanted bargain credit

    • -1

So, since you had to fill-in a form - at point of sale - that registers your WiFi modem to you, if the buyer runs amock with it (after they buy it from you) do you have any liability.

I seem to recall a doctor getting into some strife (for a time), just by loaning a family member his SIM, a while ago… :-/

      • +3

I think the SIM is "registered" to you, the 3G modem is not. RedDouglnCan kept the SIM and sold the 3G modem.

  • sweet.. hahaha..

Best deal imo.. best network coverage..
    shame still using optus..

  • After activating, do you get 30days or 90 days to use the 5 gig?

    • "Include data valid for 90 days and carrot be used overseas."

      • +9

Why can't I use the carrot here? :P

      • Aussie post has the best spelling checker,

        I like carrots…. now :D

  • -1

90 days to use 5gb! the best option recharge will be $150 for 10gb+1 year to use!

    • +1

Not if you use 5 GB every 3 months

  • So I assume you can buy this now but not activate it straight away?

My folks are keen for something like this, but won't want to use it until October when they go bush ; )

    • +1

Yes, you buy the box, then activate it separately.

      • Sweet cheers ; )

  • Is it Next G (like in the Bush) compatible?

Are there different speeds available from different Telstra devices?

If so, which speed (max) is this one?

How are Telstra's pre-paid prices AFTER 90-days going to be?
    (How are they today?)

Will NBN offerings affect how this "deal" will feel, later?

Oh, is there any in-store rego to complete, or does Telstra doo all that when you activate the device, later?

Just some of my questions. ;-)

    • it is nextG (bush)
yes speeds depend on the device capabilities & also tower range & congestion
check Telstra's website for recharge options
      http://www.telstra.com.au/bigpond-internet/mobile-broadband/…
NBN is replacing the copper network, not NextG
rego is completed over the phone, nothing to do in the store.

    • Yes it is a Next G device.

Yes, this is a 7.2Mb/s device which is being superseded by faster devices - hence the clearance price

Look up the prices on Telstra's website

It will probably still feel smooth and round

Need to register over the phone with Telstra to activate

    • This is the ZTE MF30 model, it does 850+2100.

If you're in a poor coverage area you may be better off with the USB dongle which can take an external antenna.

  • can anyone plz link the recharge options available for this, and is there a better place/price at which I can buy recharge once I use up all 5G?

  • great buy.. a friend got the DSE one the other day for $99.

  • Can this be charged via USB from a laptop?

    • +1

Yes.. but slower. PC/Laptop USB outputs 500mA. The wall charger included is 1A. Much faster to charge using the wall charger.

      • Thanks ; )

  • +1

Officeworks is still showing $99 price, online.

Maybe this can be had for 5% LESS, via OW price-match… :-)

    (OW stock # TE114949)

(To find it, I searched for Telstra, & it came up first…)

    • yep… it should cost $46.55 from OW !!!

    • No, price matching the $99 price will not work, the $49 price is for the older version.

Last time i checked stock was very hrd to find at OW.

  • anyone know if it's a micro sim?

    • Normal sim. Though, if you want to use a micro sim (i.e. iPad data plan sim), just get a SIM converter.

      • Does Telstra track the device using it? I.e. would they ever know you are using the micro sim in a non ipad device?

  • normal sim .. pretty sure..

Now the big question is how to get them unlocked..

    • +1

normal sim, why would you want it unlocked? it'll only run 3g at 2100 for Optus/Voda

      • In case you want to take it overseas and use an overseas prepaid sim

      • Voda does 850 in the cities now. Often is better than their 2100.
The $40 voda wifi dongle is easily unlocked, but no 850.

        • wow I didn't know that, I suppose it's Three's old licence

        • supabrudda: Three was 2100Mhz.

        • I think it's actually old licensing that Hutchisson/3 had from the Orange CDMA days that Vodafone is using for their network….

    • unlucky would be great for an ipad 3g and sell the modem!!

    • Last time Harvey Norman had the similiar deal, YYY was giving away 10 free unlock codes. I think he was testing his unlock code generator system… he will probably charge a small fee now I think.

Also, people reported that you may be able to get it unlocked for free at Telstra shop (though those people generally bought the modem from the T shop). Apprently, the unlock code is in Telstra's system - if the guy at T shop is nice, he/she might just give it to you.

Alterntatively, if you are a long time Telstra customer (have cable with them for years or post paid mobile service with them for years) then call and mention that fact and ask for the unlock code.

Going overseas trick probably won't work on this one coz. Telstra indicated this prepaid modem/broadband data plan is not for overseas. However, still can try.

      • Going overseas trick probably won't work on this one coz. prepaid data deal is not suppose to work overseas.

How does that matter? The "going overseas" idea is that you want to put in a different companies SIM there.

        • The terms and conditions already indicate it is not for overseas. Tel$tra has post paid version of this modem - probably unlocked.

There is no harm to try and say you want to use this overseas. Some people were even able to get the unlock code from T shop staff straight away. With Telstra, it really depends on who you speak to. You either get really good service or ….

    • Just go into your local Telstra shop and ask them for the unlock code - and take your device along so they can easily scan your IMEI. It's that easy — the code pops up on their screen and there's definitely no charge involved. Worked for me with this exact device when I bought it a couple weeks ago.

Once you've got the code, stick a non-Telstra SIM in, load up the admin interface and input the code.

  • is it unlocked? I mean would I be able to use the sim from my Vodafone mobile broadband USB stick in the Telstra pocket wifi device?

    • 99% sure it is locked to Telstra. I have asked the same question to Telstra Shop about 2 months ago, and they confirmed it is locked to Telstra only.

    • +1

It is locked. The USB port is only for charging. Unlike Huawei E585 (the Vodafone pocket wifi), you cannot use this particular Telstra Pre-paid mobile wifi as a USB modem (only as a wifi modem). This means your PC cannot communicate with the modem via USB, making the standard unlocking via USB debugging not possible.

E585, on the other hand, can be easily unlocked for free. But the Telstra ZTE modem supports NextG and Telstra NextG has better coverage.

    • It's locked but see my comment above (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48597#comment-526107) about unlocking. Telstra shops will do it for free and give you the code.

  • Is the sim in this usable in the MyTab from Optus?

    • +2

Once you unlocked your MyTab (which can be done for free) and you know how to setup APN on your MyTab.

Short answer - yes (but with a big catch - read below).

WARNING: MyTab does NOT support NextG so using it on MyTab will leave you with Telstra 2100 - which is horrible - think Three. Telstra 2100 3G is basically like Three. You will still get very good phone/voice coverage.

  • Has anyone used a Voip phone, connected to their notebook, using an internet connection through a device like this? Is it possible? Does it work alright?

    • +1

Works fine, even over Optus. Add a direct in dial landline number and you can cut the copper line.

    • +1

It handles Skype calls with no problems.

    • +1

I've used Skype with Virgin Mobile wireless usb, so i don't think Telstra will be a problem…

      • I've done Skype with video on a Three USB modem and was surprisingly good. Mind you this was back in 2008 when it was not so congested.

Having said that, Telstra Next G should be 100x better than Three ever was, so I'd see no issues with Voip on this device.

  • Thanks OZBArgain, got the last one from Post office Sydney Australia Place.

  • u resold it on ebay? how much did you get back considering u kept the sim?

    • +1

Sold it for $55 with free postage - it was unlocked though so that may have increased its value.

  • Is this capable of multiple wireless devices? Think some units promote 5 devices on wifi @ once… Cheers.

    • +2

Yes, it will support 5 wireless connections at once. It acts as an Access Point so the 5 devices can talk to each other as well as the Internet.

  • called Aussie Post on 131318 and they told me no outlets have them in stock, they're still on order… maybe the next couple of days they say.

    • I bought one this morning at Brisbane (Adelaide St Post Office)

    • bought one at lunch, think they're having you on

      • got one an hour ago, some shops still have them in stock.

      • You may be right…

A guy in the same line as me was told (on requesting 4) that they only had 2 left… when he asked how many they started with, he was told "we had 2"

I guess he bought 2 & left, ie, without challenging the idea that only 2 would have been sent to this urban post office.

  • I bought this 1 month ago same deal from office works, i wanted mobile net for travelling down to country VIC from QLD. it has worked great, fantastic speeds in the bush i have constantly had speeds of 5- 5.5Mb. have watched live steaming sports, downloaded a movie at fast speeds, all no worries. great if you need a temp. net service. Highly recommend

  • Just went to PO on George St, they still don't have stock yet.

  • Bought one at DSE on George St by showing them the PO catalog and they accepted price matching without any hassle

    • you're lucky, I tried Dick Smith in Swanston St Melbourne "we don't price match AusPost, as we can't ring their shops up directly & check if they have stock"

I tried Officeworks, but all inner Melbourne stores are out of stock waiting for the new modem version to come out. (which AusPost & Telstra already have).

So i just popped into the post office - who then made me fill out a ACMA form relating to pre-paid mobiles. Oh well the next battle is porting my spare mobile# across now so I can receive SMSs

      • Yeah?
DSE Brighton reckon "we don't have the internet" to check online deals.

        Total smartarses.

  • I think I bought the last one from Aust. Post mascot. They may have more down the back or in their display cabinet at the front of the store.

    Good value.

  • Got mine weeks ago from OW for $49.50.OW will price match if they have stock.

  • just bought from frenchs forest post office, last one

  • +1

Just priced matched at Dicksmiths in perth.

    • which DSE?

      • hay street
