128 GB of Ram!?!?! Is that even possible?

    • That's how it appears on the Aldi site as well, has to be a misprint, most probably 128MB.

      • ya, otherwise, the GPS will fly!

        • +2

It'd certainly be worth every cent of $79 and one hell of a bargain.

        • +1

128GB of RAM would be pretty heavy; especially at the density it would need to be to be to fit into a small GPS form factor.

I'd say that the GPS would be quite down to earth.

        • If it actually had 128GB of ram, I'm sure the same guys who installs linux onto a tennis ball or a can of coke will some how plug that gps into their PC making it the cheapest memory per dollar ever.

  • +1

Damn you Aldi give us Perthies some lovin' :(

    • -1

      If only http://www.wepostaldigoodstoperth.com.au really existed.

They would be making a fortune.

      • -2

Hmmm…yes…just like Price Usa, but instead someone buys stuff from Aldi for you, and sends it over west…

Hey TightBottom - great idea - lets make it happen…

        • Buy stuff from Aldi for people
        • Ship to said people for 5% extra with a minimum charge of $10
        • ???
        • Profit!
      • +1

Fortune? How many do u think you can get by 9am?

        • Look TightBottom - our first customer!

superforever - what would you like to buy today kind sir?

  • +3

Wow $599 for a 47' full hd tv with 2 year warranty. Bet they sell out by 9am.

    • +1

      9:02am ….

    • Last time it was a full on mad sprint to the pallet at the back of the store as soon as the store opened.
Competition was so fierce that there was nearly a punch on between two ethnic customers.
In the "tug of war" for a TV, one ended up with the end of the cardboard box the other with the telly.
I wish i had of filmed it at the time.

Now i think they hand out coupons in the queue to stop the mayhem

      • It really depends. Near where I live (Sydney South East, lots of Greeks and Indonesians around here), special items usually got sold out within minutes. I was surprised when I went to my parents' place for holidays (Gold Coast), where the local Aldi still had plenty in stock several days past Thursday.

        • +4

Beware of Greeks buying gifts ;)

        • What do Greeks and Indonesians have to do with Aldi specials selling out quickly?

        • +3

They just seem to queue up in front of Aldi before me on Thursday mornings :P

        • +1

Just realised my question reads as quite aggressive. No offence meant, just totally missed the joke.

Blame lack of sleep/too many cheap ozb energy drinks!

  • Damn I just bought a tomtom start. I've been burned by a generic GPS in the past. I wonder how this compares.

  • +1

    Is Bauhn made in China?

    • +2

yes of course it will be made in china! what isn't these days! even top brand names come from china!

      • +2

Indeed. The better question is which company designed and made the panel. The country of origin is basically irrelevant. My Panasonic air conditioner was made in Malaysia and my Honda in Thailand.

        • Dude,

So whats the point you trying to get at.. hahaha

    • +1

The owner of this site is made in China. What's your point?

      • +3

        Wrong.

        • +22

          did u mean WONG lol

        • instant classic ROFL

        • that is funny!

        • ah republic, people's republic. same same.

unless i'm somehow totally off base there…

      • -1

Perhaps you're thinking of Mr. Sulu.

        • -1

He was made in the USA

  • +2

damn thats a good price for the tv

While Aldi have named it horribly, I recommend this product

    http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_18550.htm

I have the same device, but branded under something else from Amazon.

Its a huge battery and has all the attachments for all phones.

I paid $55 from Amazon so this is very cheap.

    • +5

      "named it horribly"

      Fission Power Pack

Dude, the only way that name could be any cooler is if you added the word "stealth" in there somewhere.

      • +1

I mean because it says "for ipad" indicating that its only for apple products.

this thing charges anything a computer usb port charges.

        • +2

Can you run a flux capacitor off a USB port? I need an answer quickly.

      • +1

Fission power pack? Maybe they could use it at Fukushima.

    • +1

Yes I agree, I got one of these and they are very good. It says on the packet that it will only add and extra 3.5hrs to your ipad but I got this for my iphone and it easily charges it several times. It has a huge capacity and is very portable.

Same product, different tips. Get it if you missed out on the Aldi one.

  • For the set top box, can I connect it to my PC monitor (using VGA or DVI)?

    • Nup.

    • +2

HDMI, Composite (YPbPr), RCA and Coaxial output so you'd need a HDMI to DVI cable (for video), these can be found for under $10.

      • Thanks for that. If I use HDMI to DVI cable, then what about the sound? How can I hook this to my PC speaker? Sorry I'm not good with audio/video equipments.

        • I bought an adaptor from DSE a day or 2 ago that connects/adapts the PC 3.5mm jack to RCA audio.
          http://dicksmith.com.au/product/P6573/adpt-3-5mm-st-skt-2-x-…
BTW I'm using a DVI monitor with a media player using this exact setup.
Also consider the aspect ratio; 16:9 monitors should be fine but what about 16:10? Will these STB's cope? Anyone out there done this?

  • Do the tv do usb playback i.e. mkv etc

    • from the previous 42" version it doesn't!
but who knows what this one does?

and I couldn't find any FIRMWARE update for the 42",
      so basicly as it is!

    • could do: "1 x USB (software updates, media files and PVR)"

  • Sweet deals~ and thx to samfisher5986 for the product info.

  • Its always a bit hit and miss with the Bauhn TV's.
I got a 42" LCD HD (AX-42F02) (2009) and the picture is just crap, poor colour etc
i also have a 46" bauhn, (AX-46FZ) seems ok, pic is fine, the kids use it for the Xbox.
It would be good to be able to view the TV first, However i guess you can always return it but that is just a PITA.

Nothing compares to the 65" Samsung for pic quality, but it did cost a tad more….

  • +2

I bought a 42" Bauhn a couple months back and I'm blown away by the PQ. With the proper tweaking it's comparable to any high end LCD I've seen in the shops

I was surprised to even find 1:1 pixel mapping in the manufacturer settings.

To top it all off it has an excellent energy rating and 2 year warranty.

To anyone hesitating with buying one, do yourself a favour and take advantage of the no questions asked return policy by Aldi.

Oh, and get in quick at 9am sharp Thursday morning because by about 9:15 all the TV's were gone at my local Aldi.

    • What tweaking dud you do..

      • +1

Well I had to change the colour balance on each menu setting for each input first.

Then I had to go into the manufacturer settings to change the backlight because it was ridiculously bright (not sure why that wasn't in the regular settings).

Then to get 1:1 pixel mapping I had to go into manufacturer settings too.

        • +1

bigo, do you know of any video files or picture files you can download and play on a flat screen to help you adjust the colour balance? I'm thinking there must be something like "Now adjust the brightness until you can JUST see the logo in the middle" sort of thing.

They have these adjustment guides in some video games, same sort of principle. Just wondering if there's something more generic for TVs.

Edit - Found these links via a quick Google Search:

          http://www.cnet.com.au/perfectly-calibrate-your-lcd-tv-24000…
          http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv/lcd-tv-calibration.htm…

Would still welcome any other hints or recommendations to easily calibrate a flat screen however :)

        • +2

Look up the AVSHD calibration disc. It's free and you can even burn it onto a DVD. However, this will only help you calibrate Brightness (Blacks), Contrast (Whites), Sharpness and Under/Overscans.

To calibrate colour, you will need to purchase a Blue Filter. These can be bought pretty cheaply.

Even though the above methods will help in achieving a better picture, to get the most accurate picture you will need to invest in a colourimeter.

  • I bought one of the Vivid HD set-top boxes and it's absolute garbage. Don't waste your time with it.

The remote control is the most unresponsive one I've ever encountered, sometimes need to press a button four or five times before it responds. The recorder function is awful, there's no simple record, stop and pause button. You need to go through a complex menu simply to view a recording, you can't just press play or press a button to show previous recordings. There's no way to jump straight to a certain time in a recording so if you want to watch a movie an hour into the recording, you just have to rely on the fast-forward button. It doesn't remember the last position you watched it from so you need to do this EVERY time.

Scheduled recordings are so hit-and-miss when it comes to reliability that it's worthless as a recorder. Half the time the entire recording is blank, or it works for a whole then goes black part way in.

The box constantly loses its signal, even when you're in the middle of watching it. The box also seems to create interference with my other PVR. If I plug the box in series with my PVR, the PVR loses every channel except One HD.

I wish I'd returned it under the 60 day returns policy but I ended up in hospital and had other things on my mind, so now I'm stuck with it.

  • Does anyone know from experience whether all Aldi's have this TV for sale or just some stores?

    • +1

All, but some stores receive a lot more stock then others.

      • My local (South Melbourne) told us they didn't sell TV's last time for some reason, was just double checking. Thanks! :)

  • would the picture quality be any better than the Soniq or comparable?

  • Eagerly anticipating reviews on this TV. I may take advantage next time Aldi has a TV sale as I'm moving out next year. Need a big, cheap TV for the bedroom.

  • +1

Are Bauhn's TVs are good as their toothbrushes?

    • +5

You're confusing it with braun ;)

  • +1

I bought this 47" TV last time it was on sale (6 months ago?) for $799.

All I can say is I'm extremely happy Aldi has a no questions asked return policy. The TV is was sheer rubbish. If you're blind and deaf, the TV is then almost acceptable. Uneven backlight emissions on black screen and a continuous humming from the speaker.

I found it amusing another person was returning theirs at the same time :)

  • Is the GPS unit any good? Have others tried Aldi GPS devices before?

    • +2

I've used one, its one of the best.

    • +1

I have had an Aldi GPS for around three years now. Mine is a Medion brand, 3.5" device. Excellent build quality, I must say.

I can't speak for this one, but the one I have runs Windows CE 5.0 and I've been able to easily install my own GPS software of choice ;-)

The one poor thing is that the battery is effectively non-existant, but I just run it on the 12V power socket in the car, so the woeful battery life doesn't bother me.

  • Amazing.the people will rush to buy this tv without a chance to view the picture quality or sound quality just because its cheap.you get what u pay for.

    • +2

ALDI have a two week return policy. If you don't like the TV, you can return it and get a full refund. No questions asked.

  • +1

I bought Bauhn 42" TV at AlDi for $999 few years ago, queued from 8.20am … the whole pallet of TV sold within 5 minutes. Great experiences … 45' late for work … and my boss said "wish I was there" :-)

  • I'd rather buy a plasma equivalent and get a better audio visual quality out of it with the same price.

    • +1

      cheap plasma's are horrible.

      • Samsung series 3 ones are cheap & pretty good. or did you mean the soniq/nutec ones?

        • I'm talking about a plasma equivalent of the product at Aldi, it will be bad quality.

  • I'm interested to buy, but I dont want a fight at Adi…

  • i have bought 2 of the 5" version of this gps. they are very good. the only reason i bought two, is my first one was stolen. so bought the exact same again. easy to use. clear directions, speed, camera alerts, etc. worth every cent. even if its just a spare.

    • I have the 4.3" version. Good features. Happy with it. Only issue is that the speed limits indiacted by the GPS are occasionally inaccurate. For intance, at several loctions along the Syd-Can Freeway, GPS shows the speed limit as 100 instead of 110.

  • +1

Some additional info on the TV for those that need it:

    Aldi Product Number: 36207
    Model Number: Bauhn AS-47FHZ1
    Dimensions with stand: 1124 x 241 x 745
    Dimensions w//o stand: 1124 x 110 x 697

Aldi Guildford NSW had about 20 on the floor as of 5:30pm.

  • +1

So after about 3 hours of purchasing, assembling and tuning I took the 47" inch back and got a refund. Told at the store that they didn't get one return. Wondering if anyone actually bought one - 62 pluses - and what you thought of the picture quality.

    • Mine is perfect. The store sold out in about 30 seconds.

    • I bought mine yesterday. Set it up and I'm really happy with the picture quality without changing any settings. While in some respects you get what you pay for (lack of wifi support, build quality is above average but not great) in more respects you are getting a lot out of it for the price. If you don't need wifi, if you're not watching the best quality movies every day - $599 is hard to go by. 2 years warranty is good as well - the 32" they are selling next week has only 1 year I think.

  • Glad to hear. Plenty left at St Kilda.

  • Hey guys, having a few problems with the Monitor Overscanning because I'm using it as a PC Monitor.

Does anyone know how to get into the manufacture's settings? It used to be Source > 2, 5, 8, 0.
