I'm not sure what you've done, but this morning I booked a return flight Melbourne to Tokyo with luggage both ways (a little more on the return than the outgoing, in fact), and I came in at $750. When checking flights, make sure you pick the "I want the cheapest flight" option, and you get shown a little graph with the ticket prices for all the days around the dates you specified. The price can change signifigantly from one day to the next, and weekends are almost always more expensive than weekdays. Perhaps you picked days with non-sale prices?
And forget the in-flight meals and entertainment; They're rubbish. Bring a sandwich, a good book, and an mp3 player.
+1 voteWell, the meals aren't rubbish, just massively overpriced.
And skip paying to select your own seating. Jetstar are quite happy to ignore any seating "requests" (as they refer to them) that they ask you to pay for. On six previous Jetstar flights, I haven't once sat in the seat I had "requested". And on one occasion, when I asked the check-in counter attendant why I wasn't assigned to the exit row seat (that I had paid $29 to "request"), he had the cheek to tell me dismissively that my "request" had been denied as "someone has paid to sit in that seat". I was too tired and over the whole thing to argue with him about it, but simply made a mental note not to waste my money "requesting" seats in future.
But overall, Jetstar is good. I'm just highlighting one negative aspect, here.
