    What does this mean….

As a very powerfultelevision set at 600Hz, the Samsung PS51D550 is a picture on demand.

  • Good no frills tv. Got one from the Myer sale for my mum. The only annoyance is the reflectiveness of the screen. If you mostly watch in a bright area this will be a problem.

    Elsewise a fantastic deal.

    • Only annoyance? have you tried the EPG?
Either way, the value of this set is hard to beat.

  • Technically a dupe (towards the bottom) at:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/56354

Pretty happy the rep got back to me though about delivery:
"Hi Aldog, if you call us on 1300 369 265 we can discuss your delivery options.

Currently we only offer free delivery to areas we can service with our own delivery trucks to ensure your new TV doesn't get broken in transit."

    • Gee whiz, you post something constructive around here about delivery on the bargain itself and still get negged.

    Power Consumption
Default [Standard] mode (2D) 212 watts
Default [Standard] mode (3D) 284 watts
Calibrated [Movie] mode (2D) 212 watts
Calibrated [Movie] mode (3D) 288 watts
    Standby 1 watt

    • What is the comparable consumption for say a LED/LCD TV of this size?

      • +1

I still don't get why people take this into account when choosing a tv. It takes about 5-10 years to break even when you consider the price difference between a plasma and lcd.

But according to cnet, last years Samsung UN55C8000 129.46watts on default and 111.64watts calibrated.

        • There has been a lot of talk on this. I've only ever owned a LCD TV so I just want to get a feel for the additional cost to my power bill from switching to plasma.

        • +4

          considering lecky is about 22c/1000Watt/hour
So you're talking an extra ~2.5c/hour, or if it's on for 6hr/day every day of the year it's an extra ~$55/yr….hardly a budget breaker.

Isn't it funny how perspectives change. When I first bought a good quality TV in 1994 I expected to use it for 10 to 15 years.

Nowadays gadgets are so cheap, they get thrown out every couple of years to be replaced by a bigger and faster one. While that will take care of the 500W 40" plasmas from 2008 it also adds to the rubbish pile and wastes lots of natural resources along the way.

How unsustainable our society has become :-( Not preaching, just reflecting, I have been guilty of that attitude too on too many occasions.

      • @ team teri

I hear you. Exactly what i think of regarding TV's too. The wasted plastics, glass and rare metals are mind boggling.

        • i think the reality is tv's don't get thrown out after a couple of years but instead sold on ebay and the likes… meaning they are recycled for many years.

        • I think they get chucked out becasue they're uneconomical to repair.

My plasma broke after 3 years, got it replaced under extended warranty (after a bit of a run around) with a new model. The cost of the part to repair the TV was $643, before labour. A new TV can be had for not much more.

Of couse the part is probably not worth $643 but that's what they charge.

My family has the one TV; We use it for about 8 hours per day (kids TV etc).

We run an old panasonic 50" 720P TH50PX70A purchased in 2007.
It consumes a massive 528 watts.

      365 days per year * 8 hours per day * .528 KW * .21351 $/kWH (Origin Energy) = $329.18 per year in power.

Now let's take this modern Samsung 3d plasma - and say this TV consumes 250 watts on average:

      365 days per year * 8 hours per day * .25 KW * .21351 $/kWH (Origin Energy) = $155.86 per year in power.

Let's compare this with the Samsung UA46D6000 46" 3D LED TV
      It pulls 140 watts max:

      365 days per year * 8 hours per day * .14 KW * .21351 $/kWH (Origin Energy) = $87.28 per year in power.

Difference between the 51" 3d plasma and 46" 3d led tv in my house hold would thus be: $68.58 per year.

Cheapest price I can find for the Samsung 3D LED TV is about $1300

    Conclusion

It’s a winner. After upgrading the firmware to eradicate the rogue noise reduction system, we were absolutely delighted with the detail, clarity, texture, and overall image put out by this affordable big-screen Plasma TV. It can also deliver a remarkably speedy gaming experience. While it’s not without flaws, we think that given these strengths and a bargain price tag, the Samsung PS51D550 deserves a “Highly Recommended” rating.

What about after electricity prices double in the next few years?

    • +2

Then in a few years time you buy a 55" LED TV which will be dirt cheap by then.

    • Even if it trebles, we're talking about a small bottle of coke/week.
Of course if you're that worried you'd install solar panels, then it's free.

if they're within $50 of each other, then sure you'd do the sums. But when it takes 4-5yrs to save the difference. Is it really a consideration?

  • Extremely good bang for buck TV. I believe this uses the same panel as the top shelf PSxxD8000 just minus the black filter.

I cant remember which forums it was but there is a tweak for this tv to unlock the 10pt calibration mode that only comes in the D6900 and D8000 models.

  • My whinge for today- why don't they use the same standard of measurement- I don't care if it is inches if you insist on going 1965 on me- for all tvs? I can't think of any other product where they bounce between metric and imperial.

so tempted too bad im still renting a room… 51" is way too big for bedroom tv right

    • +1

What is this Too Big you speak of?

      Ever been to the movies?

      • Seriously though, it might be too hot unless you have AC (I have the PS51550C and it does give off a noticeable amount of heat).

  • Given the size of the TV, is it difficult to assemble the stand without the help of another person to, say, hold the panel upright?

    • It is difficult but not impossible. i throw mine face down while inside it's box onto the bed (after taking out all the stand and accessories). Then i tore away the box around it. once the stand was secured hanging off the edge of the bed, it was abit easier to manage if you can carry 26kg.

it would be sooo much easier with 2 people tho.

  • This is a series 5 TV, isnt there a series 8 already? One thing to note is this TV does not have the smart TV features, does that mean that it doesnt have youtube, facebook and other channels integrated?

    • Yeah there's no youtube, facebook etc. But it can play media from your lan and usb though, including HD stuff!

    • Its dead set horrible using those. I think I've used mine like once in the last 6 months I've owned my tv. Its like browsing on pre-smart phones where you have to tab through every little thing just to get to the item you want.

      D550 - no smart features
D6900 - smart hub - no internet browser
      D8000 - smart hub + internet browser

    • Networking and USB work great. youtube etc work poorly without a mouse, better off just plugging in a laptop or old PC rather than paying more money for a "smart" TV.

File support is great, all 1080p .mkvs I've tried worked fine.

I think "series 8" means the 8th iteration of Samsung's LCD panel technology, but series 5 of plasma is the most (or next most?) recent.

      • D is 2011 plasmas or LCD

        550
        6900
        8000
Are the Tiers from lowers to highest

  • anyone bought the wifi dongle for this and how is it (works ok?)
this related to previous post asking about facebook youtube etc.
so with the dongle this tv will become smarttv? ie we can access internet from our wireless modem at home?

  • I bought one of these from BBB when the Rep originally posted the deal last week in the comments of another Bargain; TV arrived yesterday. Great service and delivery from BBB, along with a great price = a big win for sure.

  • Will prices drop much after xmas?

    • +1

Technology is always going down but I would not expect this model to go much lower maybe 649/699 when the model is being cleared.

  • +1

In addition to the above mentioned extra power consumption of Plasma TVs, one need to remember about far more important negatives:
    - Reflective screen (works almost like a mirror, reflecting light fittings and furniture),
    - generated heat.
Of course, some may consider the above as positives, as could use TV as a mirror and a heater during winter time and save on the heating costs.

    • What about picture quality? Which I hope people are prioritising when buying a tv.

The old neo plasmas from pioneer back in 2009 are still regarded as one of the best panels ever made even though it wasnt FHD

  • they make a thinner reflective bezel and im sold

  • Anyone elses little picture next to the username not working?

    EDIT: I believe it's called a gravatar.

everyone's Gravatar to me as well.
